DISH Drops AMC Networks (AMC Back on DISH channel 131)

I can tell you if it wasn't for this site, I would have missed my recording of The Killing last night. I really don't care for the deliberate inconvenience caused by Dish to try and make me miss my timers.

If you notice, they did not only moved AMCs 9000 channel to basically the end of the line, so all you really need to do is go to the On Demand channels on 1 and move back, but they also don't even mention IFC or We on 131. Just more evidence that they acknowledge the popularity of AMC and would prefer to keep it.

If all I cared about was sports, DirecTV would have been an option, but the rest of their HD lineup is so lacking, they're not even on my radar.

I might only care about sports; but my wife certainly doesn't and she would kill me, if her home and garden channel, DIY network, and all her crime and investigation shows weren't available. Plus, the only sports she really cares about are teams that are 75 miles north of me, being the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays; and believe it not with plain old basic basic cable (20 channels) in my area, you can still get Hockey Night In Canada every Saturday night.

Ditto for me.. I would have missed the Season (or what may be for me - Series) Finale of The Pitch if I hadn't read that the channel was moved...I actually couldn't find it or didn't have enough patience and had to do a search to find the damn show.

I just got my free 3 months of HBO, Cinemax and Showtime and $10.00/month for one year. I'll need to save up the $$$ for the HD feeds of the shows I will be missing (?) at Amazon Instant Video.

I recently sent an email to Dish thru the AMC web site asking for us to let Dish know our feelings about loosing the AMC Networks. Got the standard email from the President of Dish explaining why they might drop the channels like everyone else is getting. I sent back the following response to the President of Dish (CEOofDishNetwork@dish.com) and Cc to ceo@echostar.com and charlie.ergen@echostar.com.

President of Dish Network,

Thanks for writing back. Why were the channels moved to the high 9000 series channels without notifying me and other customers? This caused me a big headache figuring out what happened. My wife is highly upset about this situation. She watches several shows on the WE channel including the hot new show Kendra On Top (me too). I also watch the AMC channel The Rifleman series faithfully every Saturday morning. It is a dear childhood show that I watched in the late 50s and early 60s when I was a kid. They are so enjoyable to watch again.

I sure hope you work out the issues with the AMC Networks. I wish when these conflicts occur you had a way to put the conflicted Network channels into a temporary a la carte package and just charge the customer for them if they want them. I know that I would be glad to have the package and not miss our favorite shows. By the way, I loved the VOOM channels and sure miss them too. I would gladly have paid an additional increase for the VOOM a la carte package you use to have. It would be nice if you brought them back.

My wife is telling me that if this isn’t worked out she wants to switch to Direct TV or ATT Uverse, or worse yet to the dreaded Cable Company. I am really happy with your company and DVR equipment and do not want to switch. I know that I have only been a loyal Dish customer since 2007, but my account includes four DVRs, Everything Pak, your monthly Dish Entertainment Program Guide, Protection Plan, and one Adult channel. My bill is over $200 a month and it is worth every penny to me. Please don’t force us to switch.

Again, thanks for writing me back. I hope you can work things out.

Sincerely,
Charlie Shell

Thanks inazsully. This is all so hard to believe what is going on. That WE channel Kendra ON Top show is hot. Going to miss it.
It is a nice letter but your $200 per month is rare to E*. He can loose thousands of customers even at your rate of pay and still be on top of the deal in comparison to what he stands to loose if he gives in to each and every rate increase from all the programmers. So he is only going to listen just a little

I hear ya.

What's good for the goose...

Dish's statement regarding their decision to drop AMC, etc:

"Almost seven years ago, we agreed to carry certain Voom channels because Voom promised to make substantial investments in compelling content. Voom did not keep that promise, resulting in lackluster channels that generated little consumer or distributor interest. Dish decided to exercise its right to terminate the Voom agreement. The questions involved in the discovery dispute do not change those facts."

I'm going to paraphrase that statement back to them when I tell them why I should not pay a cancellation fee when I cancel my contract:

"Almost two years ago, I agreed to sign a contract with Dish because Dish promised to make substantial investments in compelling content. Dish did not keep that promise, resulting in lackluster channels that generated little in content that was of any interest to me. I have decided to exercise my right to terminate the Dish agreement. The questions involved in the AMC dispute do not change those facts."

I think they'll understand...;)

Good Luck!

The same way they understand this contract dispute. You got a real good group of lawyers on retainer?

I work in a court room every Monday on what is called "Law Day." (I'm not an attorney.) That's when the criminal cases are called. I see lawyers do dumb things once in a while and I've noticed that the judges are reticent to dress them down in open court. Dish must have a crackerjack team of attorneys for the judge in this dispute to say what he or she did about them; that they have engaged in a "pattern of egregious conduct and questionable -- and, at times, blatantly improper -- litigation tactics." When the appeals court supported those statements in its ruling, it confirmed to me that Dish is the one in need of a good group of lawyers on retainer. I was being facetious in my statements of above. I'll probably have to pay the cancellation fee, and admittedly in whatever entertainment provider you choose, there's a bit of "pick your poison" involved, but I'll gladly do it to walk away from this train wreck of a provider.

Cute, but not at all true. Dish has added alot of content, for many of us if not compelling, certainly welcomed. Blockbuster package, MLB, NFLZ, added some very inexpensive packages, much more international news choices, and more.

Do it right & D will pay for the rest of the contract. At least that is what I've heard.
