OH NO VERIZON! New shared plans announced

Saying farewell to unlimited data :( But from doing the math, unsubsidized phones will not work, given how I like new phones every year. But there is NO FUD -- this is costing me MORE MONEY for LESS data, but with tethering.

It's never FUD when speaking for yourself... there's no more appropriate label for it when you're predicting this will lead to future hikes (not you specifically)

What were you paying before and for what, since you're upgrading something?

Thanks. I read about a 1,000 reviews and 997 of them mentioned short battery power, but that's pretty typical of most 4G phone reviews.

My primary use for a phone is tethering to my laptop as I'm constantly traveling. If I can't use Foxfi or PDA.net or something similar on the Rezound, I'll just sell it and buy something else. I just couldn't see letting that subsidy pass.

FoxFi does not work on any HTC phones, fyi. Check the app info I the app store. Only Bluetooth DUN works. Now, supposedly foxfi will work on HTC phones once they get ICS.

You got me I'm spreading fud...but 5,400 people agree with me (75%) on this recent survey...also the little gem you pointed out if you stop and read it with a business mind...once they have you off grandfathered unlimited data and in a
Limited plan they can either raise the price or lower the amount of data on you and play with the teirs to get them even more in their favor...but by all means keep living in your fantasy world where cell phone companies lower the prices due to competition...the world I live in says that att and sprint will come out with plans very very similar to Verizon just with their twist (roll over minutes etc.). Trust me I know how these companies work in raising prices...while giving you a small carrot to focus on..they are taking everything off your plate. I've seen it done lots of times in my line of work. Here its we will not charge for tethering and tablets are only 10 dollars, but your bill is going up 20 bucks. Here is that survey by the way:

I had three smartphones on 700 minutes, unlimited text and unlimited data with a state discount and a special promo data plan, which was $162 after tax. I am now $185 before tax for 3 smart phones, and 6GB of shared data. Yes, I get tethering, which would be $20, but my bill is still higher than it would be on my unlimited plan. They were nice and let me upgrade my wife to an iPhone 4S a month before she was eligible. My son will remain on the Droid X until I upgrade the next time and he'll get my 4S. (Yes, that is my cushion if I absolutely have to have an iPhone next :D ).

Tuesday Poll: Under Verizon’s New Share Everything Plans, Are You Saving or Losing Money? – Droid Life

It kills me to end my grandfathering, and the $350 contract cancellation fee if we terminate early hurts too. But I felt like I was backed into a wall. A wife who desperately wanted an iPhone, and tethering. So... I just did it.

tethering is available, without a cost, if you really want it

Chatting with VZW right now. To go from 3 smartphones unlimited to family share after discounts we will go to $185+tax for 6GB of shared data.

Begging her to let my wife upgrade a month early to an iPhone. And they said yes.

But this is definitely costing me more money, but provides hot-spot tethering, which is valuable to us both.

Doesn't that use a whole lot more data though? I know it did for me. Back in April I turned it on for a week and I ended up using 14G of data that month.

We are not going to be tethering it for Netflix. Just for iPads when we travel. And for her to use her company's new iPad app to submit customer orders, and that will be very low bandwidth. And I'll be paying close attention to it.

He already has it with JB.

Yes, I have it, but I don't intend to JB my wife's phone. and she needs tethering. Plus, I am planning on going to iOS 6 anyways.

AND the bigger reason for the switch was SHE wanted an iPHONE, and I did not want to pay $600 for it just to be able to keep my contract. I am trying to convince myself that the cost is really just $5 more than it would be if I paid for a mobile hotspot, and I get the ability to do it on both iPhones. (Heck, I won't even let my kid know he can do it on his phone).

I know...and I know as much as it kills me I will want the iPhone 5 and have to make a hard choice as well :(

He doesn't really need it though. And he does not do a lot of net stuff on the phone beyond fb.

I told him no Skype on the phone, and no netflix.

Even so. Six gigs for three phones is not a whole lot of data (depending on user habits of course). But I wish you luck.

That is what I am going to, and it will be more than what we had with two 2 gig plans and a 300 mb plan. I doubt we used 2.5 gigs between us of cellular data. I would go with the 4 gig plan, but sure as I do that, something will happen. lol

That's the way I feel....we would have to go to the 8 gig plan as I know as soon as I went to 6 something would go wrong and I would use 8 gigs

Yep me too, especially since I would have the availability to tether my tablet.

None of us are coming close to 2GB each month and most of the places I use my iPad have wi-fi. 6Gb will be plenty. Not streaming Netflix, and even the playlists I listen to on Spotify are saved locally. There will be whole months where I never turn the hot spot on. And my wife will use it for 30 minutes at a time processing shows, submitting nothing but text. And I could have done 4GB, but I went to 6 just to be safe.

I hate to say it, but "6Gb will be blown through" arguments sound a bit like the FUD we were talking about earlier. :)

SO I just checked usage. We are 11 days into a billing cycle.

I have used .4GB (and I was tethered for a few times in DC); my son has used .2GB, and my wife .08GB. I think we'll be fine with 6Gb of data. :)
