Hi all Haven,t been here in a long time but the thing is I just bought a Sonicview 8000hd last week at a store in New Jersey and the guy there told me that this receiver is MPEG 4 ready. But when I read the manual it looked like it has only the capability for Mpeg 2.But I thought maybe the store upgraded it somehow to receive Mpeg 4 because I read online that you can buy a tuner for it to receive MPEG 4.Now my question is.Can some of you name a transponder that has MPEG 4 so I can tune to to see if I can get Mpeg4. And if I'm not getting it should I buy the tuner? Are there really a lot of MPEG 4 Stuff that are free? Before this I had a Pansat 6000hxc and I lost a lot of channels because they went to HD only. But now I get them and it's Hd that will blow you away it looks so incredible on my dlp tv let me tell you C band is back just pull up a chair and let's watch tv.

I own SV 8000 from back in my Yo, ho, yo ho days. Put in the aftermarket board. It didn't get MPEG 4 until then.

It may be 3 years old but it's the best receiver on the market today. This was the shop's 2nd best receiver the number 1 was a receiver with a very weird brand name that I can't remember right now.But I don,t know if it already has the mpeg4 board in it because the guy did say that it is an MPEG4 Receiver maybe this one already came with it but I'm not sure. How do I know if the signal I'm getting is MPEG 2 or MPEG4?I get a lot of HD stuff and it,s good picture quality and the sound quality is also exellent on Hd channels. You have to see it to believe it.

I think it was a very good receiver at a certain time, and for a certain purpose, but now, I don't think so. After the company became embroiled in the epic battle with Dish Network over piracy, they never upgraded their products and appeared to proceed on autopilot. I do know that I urged them before their legal troubles got bad, to create an S2 board for this receiver. They never ended up doing so.

There is a menu item for your receiver that states whether an additional tuner is detected. Since the only additional tuner made that I know of is the one I have, if you have it, your receiver will detect it.

I can appreciate you wanting to justify your purchase, but for free to air use, there are some very good, inexpensive choices in receivers.

um try again. What was "good" a year ago is usually inadequate now a days

Hey I got a Pansat 1500 here. Its 8 years old but its "my 3rd best receiver". We use to have a sponsor like that here. Every receiver was "their best receiver" no matter what it was.

But I don,t know if it already has the mpeg4 board in it because the guy did say that it is an MPEG4 Receiver maybe this one already came with it but I'm not sure. How do I know if the signal I'm getting is MPEG 2 or MPEG4?I get a lot of HD stuff and it,s good picture quality and the sound quality is also exellent on Hd channels. You have to see it to believe it.
Some of us have had HD receivers for a few years so we know ;)

the SV8000 will get mpeg-4 as it is right out of the box....no modules or add ons are nessessary....

the only add on available for the SV8000 is a turbo 8psk tuner which pirates use the receive turbo "provider" transponders....it has nothing to do with mpeg-2 or mpeg-4, and nothing to do with FTA....the module is useless for FTA...

No I think it IS getting Mpeg 4 but not at it's full potential.I realised that when I tuned in an mpeg2 signal it gets really good signal quality like 80 percent but when I tune in Mpeg 4 channels most of them are like 60 or 50 percent quality. So I think I need a new tuner it only gets the strong MPEG 4 signal the weak ones it can,t receive. And what is the best receiver then according to you. This guy at the store told me it was his second best receiver there is no better receiver right now.Actually I wanted something that was made In the U.S.A.but there are none. All receivers come from Korea.I can,t imagine a better receiver right now this one renders HD Channels very perfectly like even my sister got jealous because she said that I get a better picture then she can get on her Hd tv at home.It even comes with a UNIVERSAL REMOTE that has BACKLIGHT and my tv remote wen't out so this is helping me a lot to switch from component video to HDMI on my tv.The only thing is I don,t know if I need a better AV receiver because my receiver doesn,t even have Hdmi so I connected the Sonicview directly to the tv and I connected only the sound to the AV receiver but the HD programs some say like AD or something I noticed that the HD channels have better sound then SD channels but I don,t know if my AVReceiver is good enough to deliver me the best sound possible. But please don,t tell me that the Sonicview is a bad receiver I think it,s the best receiver for c band that has ever been created. It even has a dvr feature but I don,t know how to buy the hard drive for it.I advice everybody.Buy one of these and see the kind of HD it gives you. Then you will fall in love with this thing.

Take the recomendations of a sales person for face value. They have something to sell and you wanted to buy..... The receiver most certainly could have been the 2nd best that the reseller had in stock. Probably had it around for several years as the company quit manufacturing three years ago. As I recall, it does MPEG 2 and MPEG 4, but does not receive S2. Maybe another member could comment on the abikity to receive S2.

What counts is that you feel that you bought a great receiver that meets your needs and you are happy! No need to buy anything else if you are happy!

I know of no modification of this receiver allowing it to receive S2.

Nice picture? Sure, but about equal to certain receivers in current production. A useful menu? Probably one of the best. Expensive? Definitely.
Good value for the money? Naah

the SV8000 does not do DVB-S2 i have tried many times....although the specs say DVB-S2 and the option for it is there in the menu, it will not do it....

i think the original plan they had was to release a DVB-S2 add on module which never happened....the picture quality is excellent....one of the best i have personally seen, but the lack of DVB-S2 limits its potential which is a shame....even the blind scan is very good....

if the SV8000 could do DVB-S2 and 4:2:2 i would consider it the best all around receiver out there....

I have yet to tune a MPEG-4 signal on my 8000 without the eyepatch board. I do get MPEG-2 HD on it though. The MPEG-2 HD is a good picture and can be up to 1080 resolution.

If you want a good all around receiver for MPEG-4, the MicroHD by GEOSAT or an Openbox flavour receiver will get the job done.

Well mine does get Mpeg4.I don't know how but my son just yelled at me he said look it says Mpeg4 signal. My son said he heard the guy say that he put another tuner from another receiver in this one but I didn't hear him say that but it,s normal for me not to listen to what somebody says but I think I,m on the verge of something here.I don't even know if this receiver is new or used it could be tampered with I don't know but my son said if it says that the signal is MPEG 4 then there is no reason to doubt. But it still doesn't get them perfectly like it's difficult for the receiver to render it it will get it fine but on some channels the signal is too weak and sometimes it just stops and says like no signal and the picture will go away and then it comes back.I think it,s doing that because it was adapted to receive the MPEG 4 but nobody knows how.On top of that I lost the receipt so I don't remember the name of the store I bought it actually it was not really a store it was a repair shop that repairs all kind of electronics but specialises in satelitte repair. It was in Jersey but I don't live there I wen't there for a holiday and a guy at a local Radio Shack store reffered me to this guy.He is very good but he also got things to sell I don't know if they are new or used but this was his 2nd best receiver he had in there the number 1 had a weird brand I never heard of so I don't know but I'm sure it,s not the psk board it's something else this receiver has or maybe this was a new version of this receiver that came with MPEG 4 or maybe there are 2 versions because mine is made in Korea but some are made in China also so maybe that,s the difference.

on some channels the signal is too weak and sometimes it just stops and says like no signal and the picture will go away and then it comes back.

a weak signal has nothing to do with the receiver....it could be your dish thats not aimed properly or a dish thats too small

Typically the MPEG4 channels use higher FEC ratio and require a larger dish or optimally tuned dish to reliably receive MPEG4 signals. Just because a dish worked for MPEG 2, it doesn't mean that it will reliably work for MPEG4. You may need to optimize your current installation or install a larger dish for receiving MPEG4 channels.

Maybe share the satellite and channel name for the found MPEG4 channel and a member could confirm if the channel is indeed MPEG4.

Well I already have a 10 foot dish so any larger would be insane. And yeah that was exactly my question if someone can name an Mpeg 4 channel I can tune in to to see if I can get it.I think I get mpeg 4 on 101 w and other sats too.I also get sports time ohio in Hd I watch that a lot.

as soon as you select a channel it tells you if its mpeg-2 or mpeg-4 in the bottom right hand corner of the channel bar....just scroll through all your channels and check....you should have some mpeg-4

Well now the receiver just froze and I had to pull the plug to restart it and lost all memory of the scanned in channels. This is already getting me a little fed up.And yeah I know it tells you when the signal is Mpeg 4 that's what I'm telling you the receiver CAN get it so I think this is the newest version with the Mpeg 4 board in it.
