So I called today to find out about upgrading to Genie and adding a receiver to my system. I was told to upgrade to Genie and to get another HD Receiver would cost me $300 to $500 dollars and I would have to sign another 2 year agreement. (WHAT, WHAT, WHAT??)
I am sorry but my last 2 year, 24 month agreement where I leased receivers cost me $3500 for the contract. Now you want me to give you $300 to $500 more dollars to refresh old tech with new tech and commit to $3500 contract as well. The lady on the phone said its because it is new equipment, which I said THAT I LEASE FROM YOU. Then she wanted to draw me a picture and said even a Cell Phone Company makes you pay for a new phone. At which I told her THAT I OWN.

With Cable TV I get the new tech without cost from a software download that they push to me. Why do I have to pay that much money for leased equipment when they give it away to new subscribers? A guarnteed revenue stream of $3500 for 2 years or $1750 a year should entitle all of us to a Tech Refresh at no cost. I pay the same as the new people, infact I pay more because I do not get the promotional price anymore. I want to record 5 shows in HD at 1 time and be able to watch 4 different things in my home if I need to. The old tech only does 2. I was floored and then she wanted to tell me about discounts because I was a loyal customer. I'm sorry if you are going to treat me like that then my customer loyalty ends. I will source a company that really wants customer loyalty.

Call back and talk with retention.

Can you clarify what you said about a $3500 commitment? If you are referring to the monthly cost of programming, everyone pays that, just not that much. A lower tier would cost you much less.

You may be able to get upgrades free with cable but look at how much more cable usually costs over both satellite companies. You pay for it either way.

$3500 is the cost I pay for the Service, I do have the top tier because that what we use in the house. I don't mind resigning a 2 year agreement. I have a problem with the cost to get the new tech. On top of the 2 year commitment they want to charge me $300 to $500 to get the new tech. I just feels like I have to buy new receivers and then pay a lease cost every month if I want the new tech, in this case Genie. What started this was I bought my girlfriend a new TV for Christmas and I wanted to add another receiver so she can get the programming. To add a receiver I would need to sign a 2 year agreement. If I have to commit to that much money then I want the new tech and not be charge for it.

$300 to $500 is the normal price to upgrade to the Genie setup for an existing customer. It's $300 for the Genie, $100 for the client box, and $49 to install them. Like mdram suggested, send an email here: ellen.filipiak@directv.com. That's the office of the president. They are good at resolving issues like this one.

That goes without saying, or at least it should!

unless you buy owned equipment. that doesn't trigger a new contract. but you have to be careful because many will try to sell you leased stuff and claim its owned.

I got an offer of $50 for the Genie and a $49 install. Haven't taken them up on that yet as they've got some work to do on my bill this month - totally goofed the discounts when I downgraded to Extra.

Just need to be willing to haggle with retention on the issue. And, of course, it never hurts to be kind :)

Peace and good luck!
