GEOSATpro External Hard Drive Enclosure that will work with the microHD

I bought a bare drive (2TB WD) and installed it in a USB connected (wall powered) Acomdata enclosure. The microHD will not display the USB green LED. The microHD will note, on the TV screen, that the drive has been removed when you unplug the USB.

My computers (Win 7 and Chromebook) will read and write to the enclosure/drive just fine. I can and did do a NTFS format with windows 7 (took 18 hours!). Swiss Army Knife shows a USB connected with a sub USB and will not format it, shows read error. Swiss Army Knife will show all of the drive information - just can't read the sub USB.

I believe the problem is with the the Acomdata box. Can anyone tell me of an enclosure/drive bay that will adapt a bare drive to the microHD?

At one time I used SwissKnife for formatting hard disks, but after having problems with it with large hard drives I found HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool V2.1.8
It has worked great for me formatting hard disks and USB sticks, however, so far I have only used USB sticks in my microHD.

Nice thing about them, is they are BOTH USB and eSata. So, I could use either interface as a lot of new devices (such as newer Tivo's) are eSata inputs instead of USB. There's even a newer version that can handle USB 3.0. I even had the drive enclosure power supply for a WD "My Book" drive go bad, and I removed the internal drive and put it in one of these and didn't lose any of my VIP722k recordings from over the years.

FYI, if you can connect that drive to the SATA ports on the motherboard inside your computer, the format process will take way less time to complete. Just make sure you have the computer off before you go making that connection. You'll need a SATA cable to connect from the drive to the motherboard but there "should" be an extra SATA power plug in the wiring harness inside the computer case.

At risk of being a dumbass I have to ask though if the Micro will handle a single partition drive that large?? Some won't.

The microHD specs show that it will support 2 TB.

Thanks for the suggestion primestar31, I have since hooked the drive to a cable type converter - same issues.

?So in sounds like the thermaltake may be my answer. Any other methods or boxes that have worked - I am interested.

I have used the Thermaltake dock without issues. Have not tried the new USB 3.0 version, which would not have any added benefit on the microHD anyway.

I use an "IOMagic" enclosure from Staples loaded with a spare 250gb Western Digital SATA notebook drive. Both work great with my microHD.

I've got 3 external hard drives that I use on 3 of my 4 receivers. The AZ Ultra has a 500GB mounted internally so I don't use an external drive on it. Two Openbox S9s and an AZ Elite use the externals.

On those drives I don't use an enclosure. The SATA/IDE to USB adapters I use come with a power supply and all the cables etc that you need to hook it up to either an SATA or IDE drive. I put some little rubber pads on the drives and just set them out in the open next to the receiver. That helps keep them cool and makes them easily accessed. The down side is that some ppl may not like the naked drive sitting out in the open like that. Luckily, my darling Wife doesn't care!
