The idea of a wireless joey sounds very cool to me. I could finally get my mom and dad to go with a hopper and one wireless joey for their bedroom , instead of the audio/video sender/receiver unit in SD that they have now with the 722k in the living room. I hope if they do make an improvement in one tech area, it would be that they make the node part of the lnb itself and do away with the other stand alone modes. Would be much easier to install and faster too.

Joeys are wireless now, you just add the $25 wireless USB stick.

I am getting word from a few people who have been walking the floor and helping other booths setup that it looks like DISH will have 3 Joeys on display.

Joeys are wireless now, you just add the $25 wireless USB stick.

So you are saying if I plug a wireless stick it works WELL using only the stick? What about areas where you get bad wifi reception , like my master bedroom? I have used a wifi extender to get my wife's computer to work better in that room , I just wonder if it would work with a wireless joey too?

That would be SO COOL if they did just eliminate the joey fees and just charge the one hopper fee or dvr fee per hopper. But this is DISH we are talking about and they won't leave any money on the table ,even if it would give them a greater edge against the competition.

I would like to see Dish just go ahead and add Netflix, Hulu and others to their hopper apps. I cant see how that would hurt their business model.


I do like the added tuner to the Joey, but well have to see on prices before I upgrade.

And, last but not least, DISH Network will be unveiling Joey television apps – for the likes of LG Smart TVs and Playstation consoles! Unlike DirecTV’s competing RVU implementation, we’re told performance is quite good as the Hopper handles the heavy lifting.

A service like Netflix would definitely hurt their model - they have competing services (PPV, VOD, and BB@Home).

I wouldn't think PPV, or VOD would be an issue, those are generally newer movies that Netflix wouldn't carry.

I subscribe to BB@home, the streaming and picture quality is terrible for me. Netflix is far superior (at least at my house). I could see where Amazon on demand with their PPV's would compete with Dish's own VOD.

I can imagine wireless Joeys will address cable clutter. But what about the "family channel conflict"? Can Dish be expanding PTAT to Family Time Any Time (FTAT)? One wonders which channels might be a part of that.

Just wondering, I guess won't really know that until press conference and discussion, but if the Joey has it's own tuner if one wanted to swap out current Joey for new Joey, would it require additional wiring or could you just swap out

It's hard for me to see them adding a tuner to a Joey, for two reasons:

- It seems counter to the whole H/J concept. Centralized operation with sharing.

- Technical reasons. With the feed from the node having 3 signals and the Hopper having 3 sat tuners, would the tuner in the Joey cannibalize a Hopper tuner? Counterproductive. Or would a new cabling scheme come about? 4.5 GHz coax? A "Super" LNB - "Super" node - "Super" switch/separator come about? Would they call it "The Switcheroo?" Would the Joey tuner be shared with other devices? Would it save to the Hopper's HDD? It's own EHD?

We'll know soon enough.

As big as the Super Joey is, I can't see it not having a tuner. Plus it will make up for the Hopper's tuner deficiency. People will need less Hoppers, so if the Super Joey has reasonable fees, people can save money.

So, the Super Joey would be a gelded Hopper by two tuners, and have full interconnectivity with the Hoppers? Why not just give the Hoppers full integration between themselves?

I wonder if the joey with it's own sat tuner, will be accessible to the hopper and the other joeys on the network? Meaning the shows recorded on the joeys would be able to seen on the dvr menu for all those on the same network. This might be the solution to my problems with the second hopper. If I could get a two joeys with single sat tuners on them I could eliminate the second hopper. That would mean 5 sat tuners with 1 super hopper and two super joeys ,not counting the ota tuner. OF course the new super joeys will most likely have a Super Fee to go with them , higher than today's $7.00 fee.

They might have a node that will allow one sat cable to be turned into 2 sat cables like the old dishpro separators. So they could build a node that takes three sat coaxes and it turns each one into two sat coaxes or 6 total. IF they were smart they would build a lnb with this node inside of it and looks like the current triple lnbs and eliminate the node completely. This would make installs a breeze and eliminate all the wiring that we have to do today to set up the current hopper/joey system.

It works quite well, one if my Joeys has been on WiFi for more than a year and it has worked OK over all four floors of my townhouse with my two year old Apple Airport. You will always have to have decent WiFI to work, old or new Joey.
