So how long do you think the Dish/Turner dispute will last?

No our entire TV watching experience isn't one channel, but that one channel is absolutely important enough to my family that we are leaving dish when our contract is up if it isn't back. I don't have any particular loyalty to Dish they are just a TV provider, if they don't provide the channels I want why wouldn't I switch?
Define "important".....Have you really no other options as to your children's entertainment? Seriously?
One thing I do know about from once being a kid and having my own, is that kids are much more adaptable than we adults think.
Yeah for a few days the kids will be inquisitive as to why their once favorite show doesn't come on anymore, but after a week or two, they forget about it.

Wow... Your kids can't watch anything else? Your entire tv watching experience hinges on ONE channel? Why not seek out ROKU or HULU or Netflix to see if you can find the shows on those?

You should be in my office when we where selling 1000 new dish systems per month. Every time we would have one of these disputes, it would be a bitch session all day long on my phones. All we could do is tell people to call 800 333 dish

You'll be surprised how big of a deal people make over 1 channel.

I remember one lady specifically told me the TV is the only thing that keeps her kids occupied. When there is no Tv they act bad and drive her crazy.

Based on my experience I think 25% of the people actually care, the other 75% just want a discount.

This is evidenced when Dish took down lifetime and replaced it with Womans entertainment and left the guide as saying lifetime..... Nobody noticed or seemed to care.

When people flip through a channel and see a big slate saying off air, they complain eventhough they probably never watch the channel

We live in a rural area where the internet is not good enough to go the streaming rout. We like the Cartoon Network if Dish won't provide it why wouldn't we go somewhere else. We can get cheaper prices for a year and in 2 years if dish has gotten everything we want we could get new customer pricing and deals if we want to switch back. So why would we stay with Dish if they don't have the channel we want?

It's funny though that the egg heads and scientists, inventors ,that lack all that common sense, make a lot of money ,more than the rest of the population that has all that common sense. Maybe it is a lack of common sense ,that enables them to see things in our world in a different light and they are the ones that help invent all kinds of things we all use today. We spend all our money on the newest technology that helps make them all richer. :biggrin
Of course. These people's brains function on a different level from normal people....Ask them to quote some thing from a book. Or give them a mathematic equation that would be of some practical use and they are all over it.
Ask them what would they do if faced with a problem where the solution is not in a book, and they are lost.
I have a niece who is brilliant. 1600 club on SAT's. Went to college on a academic scholarships. She blew up jher car because she never thought to ask "what's that yellow light on my dashboard mean?".....Her car had no oil in the pan. The engine seized.
I told her she was the dumbest smart person I had ever met.

I have met many people like this in my life. Once they run into a problem not addressed in college class they seem to be lost.

As for the car story, once had an angry customer on the phone due to me telling the customer we would not cover a blown engine due to the same circumstance. Light came on,driver kept driving, car died in the dealership driveway. I finally put it to the owner of the business/car that your employee kept driving the car despite the warning light. At the end of the heated call I put it to the person as plain as I could, "that is why they call it an idiot light". Conversation ended on that point.

I would imagine Turner/ TW may try to leverage TBS and TNT's better ratings to wrest more money from Dish. Quite frankly, I never watch TBS and if TNT went away yeah there's a couple summer shows on there I watch, but I would not be all that bothered if those two channels went bye bye.. It is what it is.
NBA fans would say differently and I am thinking that is what Turner Broadcasting is thinking also.

Election Night for CNN is a very big deal. If they miss that deadline, I will say that they will wrap the TBS and TNT channels into any future settlement. I only miss TCM, the other channels can be gone forever as far I am concerned.

The problem with that, is you talk about your initial savings, but when mass groups of people do this, it makes the programmers think they have leverage and charge more, effectively raising your rates for all providers. To the point, that the savings will equal the amount that you py full price years prior. Think about the long run. Your kid can enjoy anyone of the dozens of kids channels for the brief period the channels are gone, and you have effectively helped keep prices down for everyone. That's how you take the power back from high prices. Show them that you will remain loyal, during the dispute, and they know they will not want to be removed.
Now if you are aiming for a specific product that has no future, back on a company(MSG), that make sense to leave. But these temporary disputes does nothing more than hurt everyone's wallets, and make those fat cats that everyone bitches about, fatter

(BTW, I know you were speaking about kids ... just wanted to bring this up.)

There are other places to get news, so I can live without CNN for a while (though I would like to get it back - minus Nancy Grace if possible). But TCM is unique - there really aren't any other channels that show movies from the 60s and earlier - AMC used to show old movies, but now it's all newer stuff and series like Walking Dead etc. And the "replacement" Fox Movies is a joke.

I'm patient and will wait for a return of TCM and CNN - and I expect a deal will be done - but if they were permanently lost like some of the sports networks I would definitely leave Dish. As said earlier, why would I pay $100+ for a service that doesn't have the shows and movies I want?

I thought they switched it to MGM which was a much better match, about as good as you hope for.

Simply put, I'd guess Turner wants to use TBS and TNT to force happier rates on their other channels.

The NBA still has fans?
Well of course, NBA has lots a fans. Basketball is arguably the second most popular sport in the world, and NBA being its best league. Here in the US it's usually #3, with baseball barely as #2. NFL being of course easily #1.
