DISH CES Press Conference Announcements

Granted I don't see Directv announcing anything, but this is nothing to get excited over.

Whats the point in having a 4K Joey, if they don't have any 4K content to make it work? The voice remote has been around with Directv for a while now and I could care less, and I aint paying $20/mo to watch TV online.

I do not know how true it is, but there is an article at multichannelnews.com about Dish's press conference at CES, to paraphrase, basically it said that the remote would be available in Q2 to current Hopper and HWS owners for between $15-$20. It also stated that it would begin to be included with the Hopper for new installs (the way the article was written) presumably in place of the 40.0 remote. Hope they don't do away with the 40.0, might should get a couple of extra, I don't know about these touchpad remotes, they came with a couple of Panasonic Blu-Ray players I have, hated them, and got another remote to use instead.

So, in order to make room for any potential upcoming 4K content, will Dish convert some of their HD channels to part-time HD? Hey, it works for the local RSNs, why not expand it?

Color me disappointed.

Until there us linear 4K content I doubt they will have any sat delivered 4K. Other posts report it will only be streamed content at this point.

Channel 1/501 VOD content could be the exception, as it could spool down at something less than real-time speeds.

I asked roger from slingtv about the bit rate.

He said they encode in 13 different rates. The highest being 5Mbps for ESPN. They are using multiple CDN's.

I don't see that bit rate being good enough for live sports on large tvs. But most cord cutters aren't concerned with quality either.

I was waiting on getting a new hopper (since I have version 1) until CES. But it looks like I will be upgrading since a version 3 doesn't look to be on the horizon. But I might just wait until the new remote comes out.

Don't forget that Dish needs to save some big announcements for Team Summit in May as well. Maybe they'll talk about a 4K Hopper then.

You make an excellent point. It would seem the Hopper would need to be 4K in order for the Joey to be so.
Yet, if it is, they have been doing a good job keeping that fact quiet.
I suspected all along that the hopper with sling could do 4k ,but after hearing that only the joey will be 4k, I really wonder what the hell they are doing.
