TEGNA Blacks Out DISH Customers in 38 Markets

So your saying the Smarter people choose DISH?

I didn't say that at all, although that very well may be true. I'm suggesting that Direct TV has better marketing to the masses than DISH. There's obviously a reason why people pay more for essentially the same product. But, you draw your own conclusions.

If you're just looking to argue, I'm sure Chad or Tampa will be back on tomorrow.

Well advertising isn't a reason people stay.
No one is arguing anything but the thrown around double standard about "GREED"

Directv sort of does trap a lot of people in. I am not against it, it is their business model, and it is effective and cool for them. But they do offer credits with extended contracts, ST with contract extension, "replacement" equipment with new contract, and multiple other things that induce a new commitment. This is common for them, and is tough to get away when you want to, if you were a dumb consumer and didnt understand your terms. That can be found on any website about their lock in promotions. Not only that but it has gotten to the point the FTC filed a stupid lawsuit against them, one the FTC will lose, if they do not settle on DTV terms. Again, it is a business decision and a good one. But that does not account for everyone.

Now about the NFLST, not that I don't believe you, but I wasn't able to find any info on the number of subs to it. How did 3 million come about for number of ST subscribers?

Directv doesn't do anything different with its contract extensions then DISH.

If you upgrade your equipment there is a commitment required.
Defective equipment never brings a contract extension.
Programming offer never required a commitment, with the exception of Maybe A Free seasonal sports pack may bring on an extention of a contract.

Nothing new over Dish in that regards.

Directv has over 20 million Original customers because they are "kind of" trapped???
Well now they get another 6 million Trapped Att and another 8 Million trapped Latin American customers.

Neither one can say anything about the other Period.
It would cost me the same price to leave DISH today, as it would to Leave Directv.

Trust me I'm not a fan of Directv myself, Just because I think the are and can be pricy in my situation.

GREED is GREED.
And honestly if Dish had 20 million customers ,I would bet the Blackouts would be much less.

Charle I feel has to pressure these networks, because he's not bringing in these customers he once was.

Think about it, when your business get slow, what's one of the first things you do?

I would start calling around to get lower rates, and stop all unnecessary spending.

Next I would start cutting back.
And before long, I would have no choice but to start outsourcing and laying off employees.

Dish in going through that process no doubt, they already stated in the quarterly reports that they are recycling most of their equipment to put back out to cut costs.

DISH back in 2010, was all about the next big thing, as far as equipment. Doesn't seem that way anymore.

But the main thing is , Your networks are back!
Let's just hope next month, there isn't another one of these threads.

Dish does not have contracts for credits. Or seasonal sports packages. They do share equipment upgrades, and neither is supposed to extend for replacement equipment, but that has been a common thing.

Neither does Directv.
Show me anywhere that Directv extends your contract for Subscribing to a Seasonal sports pack or receiving a credit.
With the exception of an Upgrade, where a Seasonal sports pack is an added perk.

And equipment, I've had a 612 and 1 722 that was OWNED and flagged leased.

They are both just as bad as the other.

You just make up stuff as you go, No one wanted a freebie or mention anything about freebies, or GIMMIES .

But don't think for a second I believe these disputes are for our benifit.
They are so Dish can keep on making Maximum profit, Nothing more.
Making Maximum profit? If that was Dish's bottom line, they could just pay whatever and hike the prices more. What Dish sees are dozens of local carrying contracts they must cover and pay. They see those amounts in an aggregate amount. And an increase of x percent for one will likely lead to an x percent for the rest. This likely comes out to millions based on the number of local channels and subs.

DISH, Directv, Cable ,Verizon don't care about you or me.
And they are full of the same Major corporate "GREED" as the Networks you only hold responsible.
The big difference here is that Dish (or insert your provider her) is providing a service that I want. Which is why I pay them. They are required by law to offer locals. The local channels which are generally owned by conglomerates want more revenue, so they try to stiff arm Dish and the likes for more money. Contract to contract, the raise isn't too high, but in the aggregate for all of the locals, it adds up quickly. And for what? It isn't as if the local networks produce any other than worthless local news coverage? They are gloried local weather forecast providers that redistribute programming made by others. So why are we paying them at all? They reap the benefits of redistribution to more eyeballs in the first place. More eyeballs, more advertising revenue.

You think by holding out not paying more, or entertaining the idea of dropping Viacom channels isn't a form of maximizing profit, then your Blinders are totally over your eyes.

All Business with shareholders number 1 priority is to Maximize profit!

You are backwards on maximizing profits.
If DISH paid what the networks demand they would cut into their profit., Not maximize it.

In order to maximize in that regards DISH would have to raise subscriber rates. Okay well if Dish had 20 million customers, and was adding 100,000 every quarter, Charlie would be the first one in line for a Price increase.

But as I already stated, he's not in a great place since his subscriber rate in going steadily down.

As everyone already stated, Dish is most likely the cheapest Provider, and Yet they still haven't Netted one sub in over a Year.

Dish is adding their Sling TV subscribers directly into the Satellite tv subscriber numbers.

And for Good reason, because Shareholders don't want to see a Net loss of almost 200,000 Satellite tv customers in such a small time frame.

Shareholders start running for the Hills.

He is fixated on profits. He wants some of their profits to go to him. Maybe he should become a shareholder or investor? I realize no amount of our words is going to make him think of what the real problems may be with Cable/Sat overall, or even the problems that do exist with DISH. It isn't profits. If DISH was one of the most expensive out there and equipment was completely outdated, packages were lacking channels most people want, and yet they were making big profits, then profits plays a part. Then you start to ask are they just running the business into the ground and keeping the profits. That is all the exact opposite of DISH. I want them to make profits and then keep the business up to date.
As you point out dealing with the locals is big money, a cost that was irrelevant a few years ago but now is enough to make a difference in cable bills. All providers have this problem, and look no further than the FCC who feels it has become a problem. Somehow this gets turned into DISH greed?

You show me anywhere I said anything even close to this.

And you can be a Man, and debate clean instead of acting like a school girl who can handle difference of opinion on a public forum.

You are the guy running around saying you save $180 over Directv,
Great but since you are still using the Equipment that was released back in 2007 it's not like your Pricing is at all common with a 2015 customer from Dish or Directv.

Maybe you should spend some more money, and help DISH Earn some money, since Charlie is so hard up for cash right now.

I'm under a Promo, and Spend $120 per month.

You honestly want to sit there and tell me Charlie wants only the low end customer who spends less then the ARPU?

Yeah Okay.
He didn't become a Billionaire by giving away TV service.

These kinds of squabbles are inevitable in the crumbling landscape of pay/broadcast tv. It's an evolutionary process, and will only get worse before it gets better.

And again you are just wrong. Most subscribers to DISH absolutely do use VIP equipment, not Hoppers. In fact from posts by installers on this site, VIP receivers still get installed very often even as or more often.

Perhaps in different forms as below you are correct, and maybe you have specific examples but I'm not certain Direct currently extends or starts contracts for credits or seasonal packages. Because I don't know if it was even on this site I can't back it up, but I do remember something about credits leading to a contract extension, but was it one person saying that, more? I don't have anything to say it happens or happened.

They do extend contracts when you simply add a receiver, and have done so or at least try to do so when replacing a defective receiver. Posts about that are on this site as well as other sites over the years. DISH does when it is an upgrade, though not always. They definitely have if the upgrade is to the Hopper. But not when simply adding a receiver. I can tell you DISH allowed me to send them my owned defective receiver and replace it with theirs for no cost or contract. That replacement then became their receiver but I was happy to make that exchange.

I don't know about seasonal sports packages extending a contract or starting one, the only thing I can think of in that vein is Sunday Ticket is non refundable even if you drop the Directv service.

Vip 211s and 222 maybe.

That I do not know. I'm guessing though as Dare2be says the 722 may be still the leading receiver installed or done so very often. VIP 211 may get installed very often too. Installers who post here can shed some light on that.

You are using the term "maximizing profit" very broadly. Holding out, lowers their potential costs and outlays. It allows them to be more competitive, as Dish is, being one of the cheapest options available. By fighting, they can continue to charge less than the competition. Shrewd negotiations were also allowing him to get more rights to programming, a la SlingTV.

All Business with shareholders number 1 priority is to Maximize profit!
Well, to make as much money for as long as they can. A profit isn't worth much if it isn't sustainable, hence the negotiations.

You are backwards on maximizing profits. If DISH paid what the networks demand they would cut into their profit., Not maximize it.
Dish could just up their prices, making them less cost effective against the competition.

In order to maximize in that regards DISH would have to raise subscriber rates. Okay well if Dish had 20 million customers, and was adding 100,000 every quarter, Charlie would be the first one in line for a Price increase.

Everyone is raising their prices, the question is the rate of change.

As everyone already stated, Dish is most likely the cheapest Provider, and Yet they still haven't Netted one sub in over a Year.
The entire industry is bleeding subs.

Dude, his statement wasn't too far out of context with what you were saying and only resorted to a little obvious hyperbole. Please relax.
