TEGNA Blacks Out DISH Customers in 38 Markets

They made more revenue when they got rid of the customers that were not carrying their own weight. That was the smart move. It's not even that existing customers are paying more. They are paying less then any competition. If a customer is costing the company money, then they are gone. If a customer is profitable, and they call and ask for a credit, 10/10 times dish will give them a credit. As Tampa mentioned, comparing what they charge against themselves is a terrible move. Compare them to anyone in the industry. Compare them to the value they provide you.

Again for me, wth everything I want to do, DTV would cost more, and I still wouldn't have everything I have now. So I would be paying even more for quite a bit less. Same with Cox. They would be far more expensive all because I don't want phone. Even if I got phone, I would be paying more after taxes and fees. And would still have less options. I was affected/not affected by Tegna, because it is a free OTA channel, and Dish allows me to run my OTA through the hopper and record my shows still. Didn't miss a single thing. And my adapter was free, so no charge there either. And I get more channels and more tuners. So again, for me the value is still with Dish. I could go Netflix, but then I have to wait for shows, and then I don't get a lot of pro sports, including wrestling. I could pay for all the different services, Hulu, Netflix, WWE Network, Amazon, etc, and still be missing out on quite a bit and have to upgrade my internet, as I would regularly surpass my 500gb data in tv alone. Not to mention other stuff I do on Internet, so that is another increase of $50. See where this is going? It's about perceptual value. Dish's mission statement from the get go was to offer the best tv for the best possible price. And that is what these blackouts do. Anyone and everyone is welcome to use a different provider, but if it is about the money, then they will be disappointed there as well. Fact of the matter is tv is not cheap and as long as we don't let them do their business and make their lives hell, our bills will continuously go up. Tegna played on that quite evidently this time around. They had a true up offer, but having pissed customers makes their channels more valuable. They involved you. Not Dish. So, I fail to see your point about who the greedy ones were, and who the ones performing smart business were. Charlie is a multi billionaire, not because he is a dumb business man. Just remember that. He built this company from ground up, while being thrown out a casino, and went from near nothing to one of the worlds richest men. Again, not because of dumb business moves. He has made his share of mistakes, but they are well outweighed by the successes, such as offering a low cost, high value tv provider!

Guess we'll just have to keep our eyes open.
Charlie is a Gambler, and he could turn the lights out in a flash and not even think twice about it.

That is very true, however remember... He is a very calculated gambler. That was why he was being thrown out and blacklisted from the casino to begin with. He is a card counter(and according to a conversation with Joey Clayton a few years ago on a visit to Phoenix, he is still a hell of a poker player and loves to play high stakes regularly)

If I were to bet the plan moving forward with the large name channel owners, we will see more blackouts while Dish still asks for he FCC to intervene... Until they decide to change the regulation. Same with DTV, although I don't imagine they will go all the way to the black out on many of them.

I agree with most of what you are saying, a few things I don't , But I'm not going to bicker over them Because it's just difference of opinion.

I agree, Dish offers me a better Value then anyone else can.
But I also had to make a compromise to get this value.

Not that it's a bad thing now, But very well could be in the future.
When Charlie decides to cut something I may like someday.

And as far as Dish not as giving when it comes to discounts, well I've been a customer for 2 months and I've already gotten, Starz for $7 for 6 months, and Multisports pack for $6.50 for 6 months.
And I can almost guarantee that I will get great offers on Movie pack, HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime when my 3 months expires.

I think more what you are seeing is more and more of existing customers whom currently subscribed to premiums, getting deals on Premiums and packages when they go to cancel, Rather then the Top 200 subscribers with no premiums looking for hand out.

This, yes. But this is more, and only by guess, based on contracts with these channels. I am guessing they are not losing money in this deal. The revenue generated by the mass numbers is likely adding to the bottom line. I am more referencing those that call in every month and try and get large credits. Not the $5, $10 or even $15 per month for up to 12 months. I am talking the ones that want credits similar to $35-50/month for the life of contract, then calling in every week because of something stupid(we actually had a guy that called in to complain and demand credits because John Cena was jumped by the Nexus on WWE. This was a regular thing from this guy and the notes were long, thorough and hilarious). These small credits and offers wont break the bank any day and are laughed at. Even front line agents can make those offers. I am talking the ones that actually do end up costing the company money. They are there, and they are significant when repeated or topped with other credits. Me, you, and most people on this board maximize our value, while maximizing our customer value to the company as well. Mike is really good at that, and is a master of the art. MikeD-C05 . He can tell you how to get the most while still being worth it to them. It is also the reason credits are handed out so easily during disputes. I am upset and not getting a free OTA adapter.

Difference is Directv has 3 times the negotiating power than DISH.

ATT/Directv can influence DISH Networks demise.
They were out numbering Dish before the Att merger.

And on top of that Directv still has atleast a ARPU $20 per month over Dish.
There is over well over 20 million people willing to spend $20 more a month.

That means something.

It means that lot's of people live in ignorance. I mean, more people drive Ford pickups than any other brand. Lot's of people buy into the hype and just don't know any better. ;)

Yep, it means the power of the conglomerate reigns supreme. I won't use the monopoly word. Wait, yes I will. The majority of the DTV subscriber dominance (and higher ARPU) can be attributed to cornering the market on Sunday Ticket. Now that one of the largest MVPDs has merged with one of the largest Cell carriers, they now have another cornered market on a combined Cell/Data/TV product.

Good Lord, Almighty! You really believe that? Why?

True. The Sunday may not attract new subscribers as it did in the past, but it does keep those subs and the ARPU $ higher. If I did not live in my home market, I'd pay the 300 Sunday ticket in a heart beat.
