They made more revenue when they got rid of the customers that were not carrying their own weight. That was the smart move. It's not even that existing customers are paying more. They are paying less then any competition. If a customer is costing the company money, then they are gone. If a customer is profitable, and they call and ask for a credit, 10/10 times dish will give them a credit. As Tampa mentioned, comparing what they charge against themselves is a terrible move. Compare them to anyone in the industry. Compare them to the value they provide you.
Again for me, wth everything I want to do, DTV would cost more, and I still wouldn't have everything I have now. So I would be paying even more for quite a bit less. Same with Cox. They would be far more expensive all because I don't want phone. Even if I got phone, I would be paying more after taxes and fees. And would still have less options. I was affected/not affected by Tegna, because it is a free OTA channel, and Dish allows me to run my OTA through the hopper and record my shows still. Didn't miss a single thing. And my adapter was free, so no charge there either. And I get more channels and more tuners. So again, for me the value is still with Dish. I could go Netflix, but then I have to wait for shows, and then I don't get a lot of pro sports, including wrestling. I could pay for all the different services, Hulu, Netflix, WWE Network, Amazon, etc, and still be missing out on quite a bit and have to upgrade my internet, as I would regularly surpass my 500gb data in tv alone. Not to mention other stuff I do on Internet, so that is another increase of $50. See where this is going? It's about perceptual value. Dish's mission statement from the get go was to offer the best tv for the best possible price. And that is what these blackouts do. Anyone and everyone is welcome to use a different provider, but if it is about the money, then they will be disappointed there as well. Fact of the matter is tv is not cheap and as long as we don't let them do their business and make their lives hell, our bills will continuously go up. Tegna played on that quite evidently this time around. They had a true up offer, but having pissed customers makes their channels more valuable. They involved you. Not Dish. So, I fail to see your point about who the greedy ones were, and who the ones performing smart business were. Charlie is a multi billionaire, not because he is a dumb business man. Just remember that. He built this company from ground up, while being thrown out a casino, and went from near nothing to one of the worlds richest men. Again, not because of dumb business moves. He has made his share of mistakes, but they are well outweighed by the successes, such as offering a low cost, high value tv provider!
