I'm a recent returnee to DTV from Dish, and I'm wondering if DTV has a free service like Dish's Dish Anywhere which allows users to transfer recorded programs from their DVR to a tablet or phone. On a long flight, it's nice to have one's own movies available to watch on a tablet, for instance.

It's a otc for 99 because it requires additional hardware. We are currently testing our internal genie goes. No word on whether the price will be dropped or not

Thanks for the potentially good news ... as long as the price is the same as Dish's price: free. The Dish product does not require any hardware; programs are downloaded to tablets and phones via the Internet. I hope that DTV does the same thing.

But the thing that's good about D*'s current version, it works on ANY of their current HR2x DVR models - unlike E*'s that ONLY works on the HWS. And since you CANNOT move any programs off any D* DVR's (to another unit or to another drive) this potentially allows subs with non-Genie (older) DVR's, with existing prog on their hard drives, to have this same functionality as subs with newer DVR's.

You can put Sling on some older ViP boxes and get that feature.

But the thing that's good about D*'s current version,
The other thing 'good' about the current version is that everyone who buys into the current version puts an additional $99.00 into AT&T's pocket. ;)

People with newer technology are having to spend $99.00 for hardware that they really wouldn't need if DTV were to implement a system like Dish's. Why not give people the choice of spending $99.00 for hardware or getting the functionality for free, if they have the requisite hardware and software? Yeah, I know, AT&T would lose a few bucks. :coco

If you were in the shoes of the people with the new product, would you rather, Charge for your device (and recover the cost of the product) and eventually go to free, or, have it be free in the beginning and start charging for it later ?
If you charge for it later you deal with the backlash.

HD was free to all of us when it started, then eventually we were charged $10 per month for the right to have what we once had for free.

My information says geniego will be activated on hr44 and higher models only. Although I am not saying that is correct or not yet. And idk what will happen with pricing. Mrv was free once upon a time ago. Now it's 3 or included in certain rates. I honestly know nothing about pricing other than. The feature itself is coming.

Re-read what the OP is actually wanting to do:
which allows users to transfer recorded programs from their DVR to a tablet or phone. On a long flight, it's nice to have one's own movies available to watch on a tablet, for instance.
So how exactly DO you do this on a non-HWS receiver...

Not to be mean about this...but if having this feature was that important, &/or it having an upfront cost was a consideration, I have to ask if you did any research on this - BEFORE switching to D*???
It would have taken a simple 10 second google search to have gotten you this info...which is exactly what I did to provide you the link to it. D* actually has had this out for at least a couple+ years (the 1st version was a slightly different system called Nomad, which you also had to buy the add-on box yourself, but it still did the same thing) You obviously know how to get onto the internet, & you have been on this site with a wealth of info since 2004...so I guess I'm kinda lost as to why you're complaining now.

Sorry, but this is EXACTLY like the people that buy new houses, who absolutely require (fast & reliable) internet access, don't bother asking a single question before they sign the contract, THEN kvetch because they can't get what they didn't ask about before...I just don't understand it...

Dish people gotta troll. I will enjoy my real HD and more channels on my TV, where TV should be watched.

My first reaction to your post was going to be rude, but I decided to take the high road and leave you down in the swamp. If you had CAREFULLY read my original post, you would have noticed that the first sentence begins with "I'm a recent returnee to DTV from Dish...", which means that I am not a troll but a current DTV subscriber. I was asking what I thought was a simple question, not knowing that I would provoke a DTV fanboy.

"on my TV, where TV should be watched." What are you? A 14-year-old? And it's very presumptuous of you to decide how everyone should watch TV; what's best for you is not necessarily best for everyone else, you arrogant twerp.

What I "just don't understand" is how people can misconstrue what I thought was a simple question about feature availability. Nowhere in this thread did I complain or 'kvetch'. I was aware of GenieGO, but I was hoping that DTV might have something similar to Dish's product, and whether or not DTV had it, it certainly was not a dealbreaker. I came back to DTV from Dish because doing so allows me to save $424.33 in the first year.

dishrich, I appreciate that you took the time to respond to my posts, but you seem a little intense ... although nowhere near as bad as ejb1980 who is simply a DTV fanboy. Remember, it's only TV.

I agree with the simple Google search as a better alternative then asking here.

And it's simple why, Because anytime you compare DISH to DIRECTV you are just asking for a pissing match.

Unfortunately, it appears that you are correct. Most of the people on this forum are intelligent, reasonable, kind people who are willing to help, but there are a few exceptions, and they are the ones who stand out. I just added another person to my Ignore List, which is my solution to dealing with fanboys.
