If we do ever get an all new guide anyone think it will just be for the next server or will it be for the current and older boxes and the next server? Also will the new guide be able to have the current boxes be able to connect to the next server?

I'm sure it will be backwards compatible, but not until/if it is release will we know anything about it.

I would argue the opposite, that we've seen little development on the HR platform over the past few years. Whatever they are working on behind closed doors could be an entirely new platform. There are rumors that they want to integrate IPTV with Satellite, such as a box that handles satellite, u-verse, and other internet access for when you have just signed up (pre-install) or have signal issues.

I think we may see one more product based on the HR line, eventually if they are willing to put the money into a 4k genie. They may or may not even go after this, depending on what their timeline is for other future products. 4K is still relatively small, and the client/rvu only solution isn't hurting them yet - but it could start to eventually. That said, they may just ride the present setup until they have something different ready.

Beyond that, I think we will see a new platform entirely.

Couldn't they have a cloud guide that would run on both the new system and the H/HR system if it is an all new platform? That is what Charter is doing with its new Spectrum Guide.

Could they - possibly. Will they - very hard to say.

Dish for example did not try to bring the older hardware forward when they launched Hopper, other than a face lift to the UI on those systems to have some uniformity.

There just isn't much inspiration to reinvent the existing hardware through significant firmware changes - and some users would be upset as they are not used to it.
Customers have to accept innovation when they change hardware. If it just shows up overnight one day, they may be rather unhappy about change.

The only thing that makes me nervous if they do a totally new platform with the rumors I have been reading is it will be something like the UVerseTV modem that will add SatelliteTV connections and a SATA hard drive is that having everything all in one unit what happens when it breaks with a server/client system? Unless they will have an abundance of them on hand to ship one out to a customer overnight? Also sometimes having client connection issues with the server. This is why I think it would be neat if the H/HR series had the new guide so if that new server went down you could use the H/HR equipment.

It all boils down to memory usage & CPU speed needed for a new GUI. A ground up rebuild should be fast even on old STBs. But more code on top of old code will slow down old STBs even more.
