D12 setup

That's why they dropped the HD access fee and started charging for the first box. Everyone gets HD equipment.

I think any provider giving customers the option of taking SD equipment is stupid.
Not at all stupid. They will be going to mpeg4 signals in a few years, meaning sd boxes will no longer work. The fewer in the field when they switch, the easier the transition will be. It would be stupid to keep using them for new installs. If you have an existing sd box that needs replacement, you can request a like replacement.

They shouldn't even be giving out SD equipment as replacements. Every box shipped to or installed in a customer location should be HD and MPEG-4 capable, otherwise they're just guaranteeing a truck roll in the future.

Is Directv setting up new install with D12 receiver?
They did that for me in September when I re-opened my account.

Prior to closing my account, they had still been charging me the $10 HD access fee for the H25 (I downgraded when I re-opened the account to avoid that fee.) and I still see that $10 HD fee listed as an upgrade option under Equipment when I log into my account.

Was it a SD account?

Was it a SD account?
It is now. I even got to keep my grandfathering for no receiver fee for the first receiver, so now I do not pay any equipment fees. (only state sales tax) Before, I had a HD receiver, and they would not let me switch back to the SD receiver until I closed the account. They agreed to let me switch receivers to eliminate the HD fee, in order to win me back.

That's what I said. It's stupid to put out SD equipment when it needs to be changed out in a few years.

Where did something say that D* was installing SD recvrs ?
The OP asked about it, didn't say that they were giving him that recvr to open the account ...
If I were to guess whats happening, I'm gonna guess that the Sub got his own recvr and it was SD (D12).

No where in this thread does it say one way or the other.

Why? There is no guarantee that the subscriber is going to stick around for a few years. In my case, as soon as the promotional credits that Directv gave me run out, I am gone. (I mostly came back just for the $200 Visa gift card they were offering. Being able to make a point that it is still possible to avoid the HD fee, after fighting with Directv for more than a year over that fee and repeatedly being told by them that they would not let me downgrade, just sweetened the deal.)

I would have never accepted the D12.

I requested the D12. That is what I had when I originally signed up for Directv (before I upgraded to the H25) and I wanted to go back to the D12 in order to eliminate the $10 per month HD fee. The minute that Directv stops listing that fee, I will consider upgrading to an HD receiver again.

Curious though, how do you even stand it?

Since many if not most of DIRECTV's MPEG-2 SD feeds nowadays are simply down-converts of the HD ones in 16:9 letterbox. Which short of zooming in translates into a window-box image on an HD set of course.

And zooming on DIRECTV's already piss-poor SD picture quality, isn't exactly a great idea.

If You requested that recvr (and got it), then why are people bashing D* about installing a SD recvr, that's what you wanted.

Because DIRECTV shouldn't have permitted it even if a customer request it is the point I guess.

Still handing out SD receivers at this late stage which will become doorstops as soon as 1 1/2 years away is obviously bad policy.

That's not typically what happens, friends of mine had SD TV and they gave them an HD recur and this was 4 years ago.

Understood ...

But that was 5 years ago ...

For DIRECTV to do this now though, with less than 2 years remaining before the SD turn-off in '19 is poor decision making.
