Hi,
I was having multiple problems with DISH and the Hopper 3 so I decided to give DTV a try. I got the Genie HR54-500 with 1 mini installed Saturday and I'm wondering if I made a mistake? I say this strictly because of the Genie. I'm not sure I like it, although the picture quality IS superior? I thought maybe I'd run these questions by you guys and hopefully get some answers:

1) So the Genie has really bad lag compared with the Hopper, I don't suppose there's a fix for that? Will it get better in time I hope?

2) The skip forward and back is way different! I read in another thread that it may be possible to change the "Slip" to a "Skip"? How do I do this and If so, does it also change the GUI? Hopefully it shows an arrow forward and back with each press of the button?

3) As it stands now I'm pretty sure that one forward skip = 30 seconds, but the skip back is???? It seems like when pressing the button the longer I hold each press = longer time???

4) I was trying to set all the timers I had with the Hopper 3 and reached a limit of 90? I had close to 100 with the Hopper?

5) So the wife and I were going to watch Ballers on HBO last night. It was currently recording Episode 3 and we remembered we hadn't watched Episode 2 yet. Doing a Smart Search results came up with Episode 1 in English and Spanish. Yet Episode 2 had just the Spanish version available, what's up with that? PLUS the Genie was recording the first airing of Episode 3 so why wasn't that episode also available?

Well, that's all I can think of right now...Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

1. i think you will get used to it, or it gets better

2. go to search, search for 30skip to change to skip mode, or 30slip for the slip mode. i actually prefer slip
gui will not change.

3. forward is 30sec, back is 5sec iirc

4. there should be a 100timer limit

5. on demand is set by the content providers, directv has no control

Ok thanks.

So as for the MENUSC Command, does that work with my model Genie? AND If I enable it and press the "MENU" key does it show this list BEFORE I hit a number or do I have to memorize the list?

Menu 0 Settings
Menu 1 Movies
Menu 2 Sports
Menu 3 TV Shows
Menu 4 Smart Search
Menu 5 On Demand
Menu 6 Playlist
Menu 7 Manage Recordings
Menu 8 YouTube
Menu 9 Pandora

Oh and one more thing: The Technician was telling me this fall the unit was going to get a firmware download that would essentially give the DVR 13 tuners.....That sounds great to me, it'll put the Genie on par with the H3 in that area. Any thoughts on this?

I would say that tech either outright lied to you or got things confused with the new HS17, which has 7 tuners to be used but 1 tuner is used for each mini-client and recording.

I'm sure if the HR54/HR44 were able to get 13 tuners, somebody on here would have said something by now.

i think the tech lied

as to that menu thing, never seen it. i always use the gui menu

1) So the Genie has really bad lag compared with the Hopper, I don't suppose there's a fix for that? Will it get better in time I hope?

!

Depends on what you mean by "bad." I find the HR54 Genie to be slowish compared to the Tivo Roamio OTA I had immediately before the Genie. The remote client I have (C61K), I find to be barely usable compared to the Tivo Minis I used to have. Have I gotten used to it? Well, yes on the Genie, not so much on the C61K. My Hopper 2000 that I had before I went OTA for 2 years was pretty sluggish by the end, but I hear the HWS and H3 are much better.

FWIW: I FF on the Genie. It has snap-back like Tivos, and the "30 second skipping" does not seem to be particularly accurate in my experience. Skipping back is also not predictable.

Thanks to everyone, I have a ways to go on my learning!

As for the Firmware update to get 13 tuners: The technician offered this up on his own...three times, so unless he was flat-out-mistaken, I don't know what to think? I have to tell you though, this tech was by far the most knowledgeable tech I've ever worked with. He was correct on a couple items that I felt could not be true, so I won't just dismiss the idea...Is there any possibility you guys just haven't heard of this yet?

This sounds interesting, what do you mean by "Snap-back"?
When using FF to skip past stuff when you hit play it tries to auto correct back to where you really wanted to be in the program taking into account the delay between when you see where you want to be and when you press the play button.

I think your just have to get used to it. I've had both providers and Dish's equipment has always bee superior while Direct always had the better channel lineup. If only the two companies had merged.
