Certain models of Dish equipment have been declared obsolete and cannot be activated. What models do you have?

500 dish 311 receiver
Both are obsolete but the Dish500 is still usable for an SD-only subscription. It isn't that DISH is doing away with SD programming but that all the SD content is going to be changing compression from MPEG2 to MPEG4 at some point in the not-too-distant future and they don't want to add dead weight to the installed base of receivers. I believe that the 311 is 8PSK capable but it is not MPEG4 capable. I'm thinking they stopped activating them back in September.

It is easier to say "HD" than explain the difference between the compression schemes. Note that this "HD" designation does NOT include HD receivers or DVRs released prior to 2003 (the four digit model numbers, the 921 and the 942).

What you get to replace the 311 with depends on whether or not you want to be able to tune DTV (Digital TV) channels for the next few years (until ATSC 3.0 becomes the new broadcast TV standard).

For the most flexibility, I recommend the ViP211k as it has inputs and outputs that the newer receivers (ViP211z, Wally) lack.
