Watching pre-recorded programs while dish is on vacation hold

I have a friend that spends their summers in Juneau Alaska..They are not able to use their direct tv dish due to a signal problem, they have encountered this problem:
Hello, I hope there is someone that can help with this problem. First I am asking this question for a friend who is in Juneau Alaska with their system on a vacation hold due to not being able to get a Sat Signal. However they have multiple programs recorded to the DVR but the HR44-500 receiver will not let them access them to watch. Is this normal? Is there any kind of work around to get past this problem. They have several months yet before they will return to the lower 48 and want to watch what they have saved?
:::: I had asked this question back in June of 2016 and the answer at that time was no you could not do this with direct tv... I wonder if anyone can post an answer to this problem as the response I got then has been deleted...Any help would be appreciated with this...

The dvr function is operable only when the account is active.

And connected to the dish.
I don't think you can get to the Recordings if its not connected.
(If i recall correctly I think I was able to do that, UNTIL I unplugged the recvr, at that point I could no longer get to them.)
