2018 LG OLED's are bringing it

I'd suggest you trim it in with grille cloth (or some other material that breathes well) so you don't feel like you should have bought a larger TV.;)

Does replacing a 55" HD set with a 55" UHD set make sense? I thought to see the higher resolution of the UHD you needed a bigger set or to place yourself closer to the set.

Probably not for the HD itself. You likely will see a difference in better black levels and an expanded color pallette. That is more from improvements in newer sets though.

That depends on whether the 55" was big enough to begin with. You can't easily go back to a smaller TV.

The shooting style in modern TV shows seems like it has changed noticeably in the last five years or so. I notice that they're using some fairly wide shots that used to be done a lot closer. In that, a larger TV may be helpful to compensate. It is also noticeable that they've pretty much abandoned the safe area outside of which CRT and RPTVs may or may not display the image in favor of a full HD display.

The Entertainment center was custom built by my Father-in-Law and designed around a 55" Mitsubishi HD RPTV from the 2000s. The center opening is 52.5" across, and if there was a 58" UHD OLED set I would be done. I would need to take a router to the sides to get a 60" LG LCD in there, believe me. As it is, the entertainment center dominates the southern wall of our family room; another 8" wider would prevent access to the back of the unit from the sides, and my Father-in-Law's Major Project days are behind him, so no redesigned bridge / center cabinet.

Since it was intended to fit a RPTV, it is way too deep for flat panels, so I have lots of open air space behind the TV. He built a sliding center mount so the TV can "wall"-mount but still allow access to cables and such behind the set. Harshness and I are on the same wavelength thinking Kuruko is the way to go behind the new LG...

I guess I should have waited a week, the price on my set just went back down to the Black Friday price, plus Crutchfield is throwing in a $170 Gift Card to sweeten the deal.

I must have been having too much fun with the new LG since I haven’t updated my install report.

I had to adjust the wall mount I am using in the Entertainment Center to move it 2” lower than where it was with the Samsung due to different bezel size and VESA mounting holes. I had to buy new M6 hardware as the Sammy used M8 machine screws.

Also, since the screen is higher and the bezels practically nonexistent, there is now a 4” open space under the LG. I’m looking at my options; fortunately my Father-in-Law has milled some blank panels (stained to fit in with the rest of the unit) and one is almost exactly the right size. It just needs to have 3/4” ripped off the long edge and some cletes added to hold the panel in place.

I also need to find the sites with Config hints so I can eliminate the Soap Opera effect on 24 FPS content.

The 4K HDR content from the Winter Olympics I have stored looks fantastic! So it’s ten months late…

Just read the LG OLED announcements at 2019 CES. The good news is I have a beautiful TV picture and paid an acceptable price for it. Of course, the 2019 OLEDs are better in a number of ways (HDMI v2.1, for one, and Apple AirPlay/HomeKit {for those who are in the Apple ecosystem} compatibility for another).

But that is the way of Electronics: Wait, and something better will come out...

I plan on enjoying my E7 and C8 for years to come. I have no interest in gaming and 8K will make no difference from where I’m sitting. The content I watch will make no difference for this years OLED’s.

Unless you're looking for higher frame rates that aren't supported by any media (UHD at 80+ Hz) or greater than twelve channel sound, I'm not sure HDMI 2.1 is something to chase after for a few years. If the TV can't support it, why add the cost?

As Apple has discovered the limit on how much people will spend on regular hardware upgrades, expect to see Apple's media content on more and more platforms (Samsung is just the start).

Homekit can only hope to be a distant also-ran.

The only feature of any importance that I see you may be missing out on is support for HDR10+ but I expect that it will give way to HLG in the long haul (especially if Next Gen TV catches on).

Of course the 2020 models may have Next Gen TV tuners but that's no guarantee of available content.

I finally found this, and I'm glad to say that the Soaps have been cancelled ;)

The very first time I saw the "Soap Opera Effect" (I didn't know what it was yet) was right after I bought my LG 3D smart tv in 2013. I still had dish then, and was on the Sony Channel. They just started "The Crow" in HD with Brandon Lee, and I was absolutely fascinated!

It literally looked like a comic book, and was absolutely amazing!

I later on turned off the setting that makes it be on 100% of the time, but that was my first time, and I loved it!

Interesting. I've never heard anyone that likes it. Many that say that they don't see it, but everyone I've ever talked to who "can see it" hates it! I personally detest it in all circumstances.

But "The Crow" is a graphic novel as a movie. The SOE made the scenes in it LOOK like painted graphic novel pages even more so, since Sony Channel broadcast it in HD. Likely one of only a very few movies of this type that are HELPED by SOE.

Are you talking about the 1994 film with Brandon Lee? Or are you talking about something animated? If you are talking about the live action movie, the I cannot agree. Anything with real people is terrible with SOE. If you are talking about something animated, then I'm not sure as I don't believe I have ever seen anything animated with SOE going on.

I'm talking the 1994 movie with Brandon Lee. It absolutely was perfect with the SOE settings on my 2013 LG 3d tv set, when I had Dish Network and the Sony Channel. I have never seen it look better.

I think I'm finally going to pull the trigger on an OLED. The prices on the 55 and 65" are really great right now. Unfortunately I want the 77". The LG 77C8PUA can be had from reputable dealers for $4,800 delivered now (no tax). I really wanted it to get to $4,500... With the new models coming out in another month or so I can't decide if that is going to make the prices drop or not. Sometimes there is an inverse effect when people realize that the new ones are going to be quite a bit more for a while and they better jump on the "old" model before it sells out. Anyone here have the 77" version?

If a few hundred bucks is important I would just wait for 2019 models. I snagged a 65" C8 once they got down to around 2K. Noticed this week even under at some places. Even if not authorized dealer when you register just use Amazon as purchase place, don't forget to use current price listed on Amazon also.

I wonder if OLED will EVER live up to the expectation it would become cheaper to produce than LCDs. Some other technology might supersede it first.

Who expected that?

Economies of scale don't happen unless the technology has some major advantages over the incumbent and OLED hasn't placed itself in a position to do that with a 100%+ price penalty and not being able to produce the brightness that LCD can.

I wonder if OLED will scale to the smaller sizes that the masses typically want.
