The OFFICIAL DISH / HBO Thread

Which brings us back to what has been discussed before on this thread. Those who can stream will do so a month or two a year, and those who can’t stream won’t.

I can stream HBO, but I refuse to do so, for $15/month, A 4k Netflix Sub is cheaper and has better programming, too Me HBO is only good for "Throne Games" and "Guess who's NOT a Robot, World" The rest of their programming is of little interest to me.

I’m not so sure HBO split the take with Dish. Could be Dish just used it to attract customers that they made money on elsewhere.

Looking into the future, if all these channels want to steam there are going to have to be some mergers eventually. It's too many.

Getting back to the original topic of whether HBO/Cinemax will eventually come back to Dish, I think the longer this goes, the less likelihood they will come back. This is because one party or the other has to capitulate, and I don't see that happening.

I would wonder if this same scenario will play itself when the contracts of other cable companies come up for renewal.

They would be losing money, even by increasing the cost of the channel, would have a greatly diminished viewing audience. Most channels I watch are because I landed on them. Not because I sought them out.

Er, um, maybe. Gotta wonder how that worked out. A Dish loss leader? Which convinced them they couldn’t GIVE it away beyond the core subscribers?

In any event, I think it’s over for Dish. I believe they have no interest in renewing now. Whatever subscriber losses they’ll take, they’ve already taken. And they figure it’s not an attraction for new subscribers, who may be more used to streaming. Or steaming, as auto miscorrect seems to prefer.

HBO’s only unique value is in original programming. And that seems to be of partial year value.

I’m not much into movies. But I seem to see everything I want or might want available elsewhere. Including Amazon Prime. Or 12 bucks or so gets me the BD.

I can’t help but think maybe HBO/ATT has made a very bad decision. They only made money on their original programming. So if folks are happy to wait for the movies to be available elsewhere, folks may decide their original programming wasn’t worth it. Very bad for HBO and AT&T.

Well, if that's the case, perhaps Dish should just go ahead and take down the info channels on 301 and 311, remove HDNet Movies from 300 and 310 when the free preview is scheduled to end at the end of this month, completely remove HBO and Cinemax from subscribers' bills instead of crediting it back, and stop jerking everyone around giving us all false hope by maintaining the status quo. They finally took the above steps for the Univision dispute, but of course they waited until announcing a price increase before making the Univision-related changes to the billing permanent. I am afraid that when Dish does the same thing for the HBO/Cinemax dispute, it will come with an announcement of yet another price increase.

You are right about most movies being available elsewhere, including purchased VOD movies directly from Dish. Perhaps that is Dish's strategy long-term: make deals with the movie studios to sell individual movies directly to subscribers, and cut out the middle man by dropping the premium movie services completely.

According to the CSR I talked to today, I was told Dish is getting closer to getting HBO/Cinemax back, but no date. On the other hand, Univision will not be back.

You should know better than listen to a Dish CSR. They don’t know anything and just tell you what you want to hear.

I have had an informed CSR at times and their comments did indeed come true. I am not saying, they are all informed, but some do have some insight. It does make sense they would be working to get HBO/Cinemax back.

Never say never, we waited years to get Disney and some of the ESPN channels in HD. Those were a running joke around here for years, with them topping bluegrass and others' lists of channels they want in HD, over and over and over. The same happened for 24/7 RSNs. My bigger question is what returns first, HBO/Cinemax or Univision?

Well, if HBO/Cinemax doesn't return, what will Dish do with all that available satellite bandwidth/space?
