I am told that most of the channels are not HD. That would be disappointing if true.

That's more than ridiculous, it's ludicrous in these days and times. That is yet another big strike against them.

So we have: either $100 standard receiver or $200 for the DVR receiver, and $150 install fee, that's $250 - $350 out of pocket. Does the dish cost extra, or is that included in the $150 install fee?

What happens when people buy and pay for all this, and the installer comes out and can't get line of sight to 117w? Do you get any refund?

Sorry, I'm not Harshness, but I don't get it. It's too pricey out of the gate for SD channels, and a dedicated receiver locked to a single service and single tv set.

Would you watch them in SD?

IMO, their market is people that can't get ANY sort of tv at their house except for some sort of satellite tv, AND don't have high-speed internet usable for streaming AND are willing to settle for SD channels AND have a bunch of money burning in their pockets for initial install.

Wow.

Interesting thread. Been up watching tv at all hours this week dealing with a lovely case of bronchitis. Somewhere around 3AM this morning, saw a commercial for this service. Don't remember which channel was airing the commercial, but wondered if it was a legit service.

Another thought I had after reading your post... what if the business doesn't make it? Then you're stuck with a boat anchor receiver. If it could be used for FTA that would be another thing.

I could reuse the dish and OTA antenna...

The Orby STB looks a lot like a FTA receiver. Maybe it could be flashed and reused for FTA if the company tanks.

If anyone things these prices are high I can remember looking into AlphaStar - Wikipedia and having them call me asking me to buy a $700 setup to become a dealer. This was back in the mid 90s. Needless to say I did not become a dealer.

People aren't the same anymore as the mid '90's, and there's far too many choices now for tv service that are better and much cheaper without all the upfront costs this one has. I hope the best for these guys, but I can't believe they are likely to make it very long.

$3,000,000.00~ a year just in uplink costs? That's 75,000 $40 subs to break even, and doesn't even tell us what their other costs are. Plus you have to figure that IF the $150 installation cost includes the dish, an OTA tv antenna, coax and such AND is supposed to pay a tech that has to drive to you, they must be subsidizing that also, because how could they do all that for so little? Heck, the tech cost alone has to be a minimum of $100!

Flashed with what firmware? They'd be idiots to not have the firmware itself encrypted, seeing as they have to have an embedded Nagra card for encryption.

The posts in this thread are like listening to blind men describe an elephant.... LOL!!! A lot of guesses, but no one has seen one let alone used one.

Picked up the receiver at Best Buy a few hours ago for $107 including CA tax. Self Installed and connected to a dish aimed at 117w and went through the online set-up. Provided the SIM ID # and set-up monthly auto-pay on a credit card. The sign-up took less than two minutes. The STB authorized within five minutes, did a software update and I'm surfing the channels now.

Does not require professional install to activate. I wanted the ATSC antenna/diplexer, so I called customer support. They checked the signal levels and were satisfied with the levels. They will be sending the ATSC set-up for adding local channels.

Some channels are in HD and others are SD. Haven't made a list of the resolutions, yet. It appears that all channels have EPG, CC and also SAP when the program offers.

My initial review is positive. For the price, I like that it offers the more popular channels. Think this will be excellent for the RV as it uses doesn't require the internet, uses a single LNB for simple quick set-up and can easily activate then deactivate when not in use.

Edited: Changed dongle to antenna/diplexer

Just was thinking... Why only use in the RV? This box might just stay activated when we are home. This would be a nice sidecar to the FTA system. When I'm done surfing the feeds, backhauls and wacky channels, either leave the dish pointed at 117w or use with one of my surplus dishes and we will have the mainstream programming of channels that I actually watch on the cheap!

If you have time, could you let us know which channels are HD and which are SD?
