Since satellite is the only way the receiver can receive data, it must be active.

It was stated previously that the STB doesn't need to be authorized in order to search for the satellite signal.
It is not an lnbf. It is an lnb that bolts to the feedhorn. The horn stays fixed, but the lnb can rotate for skew. You cannot see the bolts I'm referring to on his pics. Some have circular slots where the lnb rotates.

It's a clamp, and it has degree measurements on it. It can be loosened, and the lnb turned. It is not locked to the dish.
Got my new winegard 30in dish today and setup. Took all of 2 minuets and had a lock. SS 83% SQ 99%. I temporarily mounted the dish to my deck until I can move it up to the roof when the weather gets better. What switch should I get to add few more receivers down the road and also keep my antenna connected to all of them?

Congrats! A 2GHz (2000MHz) splitter will feed the satellite vertical polarity and terrestrial signals (if you add an ota antenna) to additional receivers.
Would you have one in mind that can handle 5 TVs? The plan is to only one more box to the bedroom but be nice if the rest of the TVs were ready to add boxes to if needed. So far I’m not to impressed with the dvr. It seems that it doesn’t support schedule recording based on the shows name to record all episode when ever it airs.

Might be possible to repair that dish where it can be used. Get some metal bar braces from the hardware store, drill a couple holes, and bolt together, and use as big of a washer as you can on the inside to give it extra support or cut down a bar to fit. As long as the rest of the dish is intact, it should work. I fixed one where the arm mount was broke off and it works perfectly.

I believe you would need a diplexer to combine the satellite and antenna signals, then connect to the IN on the splitter, then each OUT would connect to additional receivers.
If I'm not mistaken, there is a diplexer built in to the receiver, so you only need one to get both signals into the receiver.

Use a splitter with only the amount of ports needed. Don't buy a 5 port if only using 2. The less number of ports, the lower the loss.
When you buy a switch, compare the loss on each port (lower is better) and the isolation between ports (higher is better).
Also, only one port needs to be power passing (1ppp).

You do need a diplexer in front of the splitter. The OTA connects to the "Ant/VHF/UHF" port and the LNB contects to the "Sat" port. The remaining "IN/OUT" port connects to the splitter/switch.
