Cord cutting ramblings...

Hulu Commercial Free-$7.20-gift card discount when I bought a year's worth last xmas when they were on sale
Netflix with 4k-$9.59-gift card discount when I bought a year's worth last xmas
Disney+-$3.92 a month-paid the discount 3 year prepaid price
OTA with DVR-free except for the equipment cost of the Tablo Quad, so $8.29 a month over 2 years plus $50 a year for the guide, so $12.46 a month
For new movies, we share our Movies Anywhere account with four others, since we split the costs, average monthly to me is about $10 a month ( usually buy 4-5 new movies a month)
Amazon Prime-pays for itself with the free shipping

So total monthly cost-$43.17 a month
Will subscribe to CBS after Star Trek Discovery is done for the season, binge that and Picard and then drop it
As far as the new HBO/Warner service, will check it out when it is up, but as of right now no interest.
Sports-don't care

Tablo Quad up and running.

What a great little device, it lists shows under Network ( for example Seal Team is listed under CBS ), Prime Time, Premiering and all.

Find the show, set the record options and ready to go.

Should of done this sooner and with the 8TB Hard Drive I never have to worry about space.

I noticed on a Cnet video review about a subscription to the guide. Do you have to pay for the guide to be there? Also is this for OTA or can I hook up my Roku to it?

I checked my internet usage. 563Gb as of the night of the 8th, though as history has shown me, they tend to be a little behind. So with a little over a week of almost all streaming, I’ve used up a bit over 25% of my 2TB cap. If I keep on at the same rate, 2TB won’t be enough and makes streaming look less likely.
Strictly from a financial standpoint, if I up my internet to the next tier, the price will rise $10/month which reduces the difference between cable and streaming to $10 for at least a year. Hardly worth the hassle IMO.

There are 4 of us here, my wife retired a few years ago and I did last January, so at least 1 Television always on and we stream everything and have for the last 3 years, plus kids gaming, on their computers/tablets, their TVs, myself on my IPAD, plus Netflix and movies on Vudu in 4K and only once have we gone above 2TBs, it always seems to average right around 1.6 TBs.

Where are you getting the cheap gift cards....Costco or Sam's Club?

$5 a month or $50 a year ( I did the year)

Yes this is a OTA DVR, you wire it to your router and then every TV with a Roku picks it up, all the controls you can do via the Roku or a PC, Tablet even a phone.

After the set up, it is no different then any other DVR, you do whole seasons, set it to manually record one episode, it will even do commercial skip.

It is so incredibly easy that my wife figured it out.

I know everyone’s usage is different, but with three of us, and all of our tv viewing being net delivered, we’ve only gone over 1tb twice in close to three years.

Even on the weekend during sports season, I can’t make our usage go over 35 gb on a single day with three streams going most of the day.

Do you leave yours on all night ? ;)

No, but it is on full time from about 10AM to 10PM. I could manage that a bit I suppose, but that just adds to the negatives of streaming only. When you take costs out of the picture streaming is just more irritating than linear IMO.

I think something is wrong with how they count your data, our usage is 3 times what yours is and again we are at 1.6 a month.

Possibly, but it is their metering and billing.

Hopefully as the new seasons of broadcast television shows get going, your streaming usage will drop significantly. Of course that presupposes that the new season doesn't stink on ice. There were some big series finales last season (along with some shows that should have run a series finale).

Are you really streaming 36 hours of content per day plus what you're actually watching?

Again 4 of us, right now my wife and I are watching Carnival Row in 4K while I am downloading movies to my ipad to watch while on the life-cycle, our daughter is watching something on Netflix in 4K in her room while at the same time on her ipad, our son is watching Avengers Endgame in 4K on the projector in the basement.

That accounts for maybe 10-12 hours of HD level data. Does this viewfest go on for several hours each day?

I'm not sure I could survive half of a movie on a stationary cycle -- even if the brake was off.

Yes, everyday, the vast majority we watch is in 4K.

I do 2 hours a day on the life cycle, have a 12.9" iPad pro so watching movies on it is just fine.

OK, 10 days into the testing and I’ve decided to stick with cable/tivo for at least the next year. Here’s the deciding factors:
1. Financial - costs are nearly the same though cable is a bit higher. But many more channels in the package.
2. Sports - I’m not a big sports fan, but I do watch some. Mostly golf and boxing. In order to get much of those two would require using at least one additional cable/sat replacement type service and would push the cost comparison in cable’s favor.
3. Convenience - Hands down cable/tivo is much more convenient to use. Better DVR, auto ad-skipping, channel/program guide, and scheduling.

In a year, or if something really changes in either OTT or cable I’ll revisit.

I’m in that area of waiting another year too. Right now my basic cable bundle and internet win TiVo’s is still cheaper than doing internet only and using YouTube TV and/or Philo. I could do Philo only for most of the year and come out cheaper as long as I could stay under 1TB data cap (that is debatable), but I do like to watch Aussie Football and some college football this time of the year so for a few months I would need the few sports channels with those things.

The awesome TiVo Automatic Skip-Mode will be tough to give up too.

If the numbers aren't penciling out as a unqualified win, then you should absolutely wait. I don't think you should wait a whole year though (unless your old-school carrier has you under a commitment). I believe viewers should run our numbers at least twice a year and see how you're doing. Part of running the numbers includes making sure that the "needs" are updated and the no longer "needs" are discounted or removed from consideration.

My own "needs" have been dwindling faster with each passing month. The OTT services that I use find me spending a goodly fraction of the total entertainment time struggling to find something to watch. Part of this is surely related to poorly designed UIs but the selections seem to be getting further into the weeds as time passes.
