It's also not going to get any better than it already is. They won't be throwing any more money into the service. They will let it die a slow death and force people to change. AT&T wants to slowly sunset DTV. It will take years but they don't want people buying it anymore.
It seem the AT&T TV folks are still very much in "cable" mode when it comes to pricing:

It sounds as if you think AT&T is going to live or die on DTV, not the case. They still have 20 million video subs, and DTV is a small portion of the business. Analyst: AT&T Is The Top Telecom Pick For 2020
A lot is riding on HBO Max being a success. At $15 a month it will be one of the most expensive streamers. Can they get the subscribers they need to make is successful. DTV is a drag on their bottom line. Plus the added debt of buying Warner.
What more money would it need? They don't need to launch any more satellites, build any more expensive broadcast centers, or design any revolutionary new equipment. All they have to do is maintain the existing service as is.

I said AT&T doesn't need to make any big investments in Directv and you read that as "AT&T loves Directv"?
Satellite and streaming delivery serve different purposes, and different markets. Your argument is like saying that if Ford likes trucks so much why do they keep selling Mustang and Focus? Everyone knows that the market for traditional cars has shrunk a lot over the last few decades with more people buying trucks, SUVs and minivans than cars. Doesn't mean automakers are getting out of the car business though, even if it will never be what it once was.
D* is still better than anything out there picture quality wise ....

They will do what they have to, but thats about it.
If I walk into an AT&T store I bet they try to sell me AT&T TV and not DTV. They are not going to push DTV anymore. It will be considered the unwanted stepchild now.
And thats a problem HOW ?
They don't push U Verse anymore either ...
I fail to understand why some people think thats a Big deal that they don't push D*.
They are going to try and push thier streaming services because thats the way of the current and future according to the current market.
Just so you know the facts ...
If I call ATT tomorrow and ask for U Verse TV (provided I'm in an eligible area) they WILL sell it to me.
If I call ATT tomorrow and want D*, they WILL sell it to me.
If I call ATT tomorrow and ask for a streaming service, they will sell me one ...
They don't care which service you use as long as you are using one of them.
They would LIKE you to go to a streaming service because it cost them much less in the long run.
D* will be one ... and whatever Streaming service survives .... and whatever NEW technology that comes out.
ATT may have sold D* by that time as well.
Received the C71KW box yesterday. Got the harmony remote to work with it in 5 minutes. Aside from the brutal price spike in the 2nd year of the contract, I feel ATT is going to miss out on something that could've been great. I say this because this device is under-powered. Either that or something is inefficient about the software. Will it settle down after a day or 2? At this point I hope it can at least run ATT TV at a good pace and forget about running any of the apps. Too much lag and a couple of times the box rebooted on it's own when trying out the apps. The device gets you close to the experience of having a real DVR at home and a major improvement over the app on the apple tv 4k. I would've gladly paid for a device with similar horsepower as a Nvidia Shield. Maybe it's mismanagement of the RAM which could be corrected with future updates.
The other thing has to do with recording a series. I set it to record only new episodes and it records everything and from every channel showing the series. I'm not sure if the guide is listing these shows as all new, I'll have to look at that again. Is the guide info from Gracenote? To be fair You Tube TV does the same thing. There is hope they may get this part right since the option to only record new shows is there.
Another positive when compared to similar services is the Dolby Surround audio and infinite guide scrolling with multiple line skipping. It's very close to what I am used to with some minor annoyances that include HDR always being on. For some reason it's not exactly the same as when the apple tv forced HDR. The colors don't seem to be as saturated compared to the way the apple tv used to be. Still, I'd prefer it would display these channels in SDR.

I decided to 'try' AT&T TV, was going to plan to use it and have my Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, AcornTV, etc... without having to switch back to Roku or AppleTV.
Long story short, I was going to replace my DIRECTV with it.
I received the box, connected it, waited for it to boot and update.
The PQ was quite good, I have a 1Gbps fibre connection so, I wasn't worried about the speed of that.
The speed of the box however, is HORRIBLE, it is laggy, the menus take forever to load, changing channels takes much longer than my DIRECTV service. I am not a huge fan of the guide either.
I found it a complicated procedure to program the remote for my Sony television, the damn thing kept selecting the 'pair remote' option for the device itself, this was EXTERMELY laggy and took forever, it it seemed to select the proper setting for programming my remote for the TV.
Anyway, I had already decided I did not like it, and would have likely took it back to the AT&T Store anyway and cancelled the service, but the absolute last straw was, I was unable to install the Prime Video app, and a few others.
They kind of 'advertise' that one is able to install any AndroidTV app on it, but apparently, AT&T has to have an agreement with some of the OTT services to use the app on 'their' AndroidTV device.
I cannot believe that they released this crap, it still feels like a 'beta' product.
Needless to say, for me, I will be keeping my DIRECTV service for the foreseeable future.
