HR23 losing Whole Home MVR & Internet connection

For the past month, my HR23 was occasionally losing it's ability to access the other DVRs in our home as well as losing it's ability to connect to the internet. Now, it loses these capabilities continually. Everything else seems to work well for a box that's really old. Fiddling around with the box I noticed a couple of things:
  1. The DCA Adapter is really hot.
  2. When I switch the blue Ethernet cable (coming from the DCA) between the two Ethernet ports on the HR23, it immediately accesses the internet and the playlists on the other DVR's.
I'd love any suggestions before calling DirecTV. I've checked on Ebay and the type of DCA I need is available as new for around $10, but if the Ethernet ports on the HR23 are going bad, I don't think that would fix it.

Also, if I did get a replacement box, are HR23's or HR24's shipped out anymore? I've got an HR54, HR24 and the problematic HR23. I do not want to move to two clients if I don't have to.

Grateful for any advice.

If you have an HR54 you shouldn't need the separate DECA. Try disconnecting the DECA and just use the coax connections from the dish. BTW, I don't think Directv is shipping anything but HR24s now.

Ok, that would be news to me. I've had my HR54 for years and it's always been my understanding that the HR23 and HR24 needed an external device that allowed it to connect to the internet and the other DVRs. I even have a third party wireless gaming adapter connected to my HR24 to allow those connections.

Anyway, I did what you said and I no longer have an internet connection nor access to the other playlists.

To be clear, the DCA I am referring to is called "Connected Home Adapter," and the model is DCA2SR0-18.

Have you gone through the setup for the internet on the HR54?

This is from a Solid Signal pdf, but it accurately illustrates what the set up is on my HR23.

Again, my HR54 and HR24 can see each others' playlists just fine and both can connect to the internet, but the HR23 cannot consistently do either. The only way I can get the HR23 to temporarily work is to switch the blue connection (above) from the adapter back and forth between Ethernet 1 and Ethernet 2.

This is why I'm thinking the Ethernet ports are dying on the HR23 or the DCA is going bad.

The Solid Signal PDF can be found here.

And the HR24 and HR23 are connected by coax? Have you gone through the setup with them?

I just checked the Solid Signal website. Apparently the HR23 won't connect without a deca. I'd call Directv and tell them the HR23 is dead, won't even boot up. They should sent you a replacement and it will most likely be an HR24.

Yes, the HR23 does need the DCA, but the HR24 does not so disregard what I said about the gaming adapter. I forgot that's connected to something else.

I'll call. Thanks.

Either your DECA or HR23 is bad. Either way, replacing the HR23 is a better way to go. That is unless you want to keep the HR23 for the recordings on it. The HR23 is widely considered the worst of the Directv dvrs.

They may not be shipping them out as new recvrs, but I bet they would for a replacement for his HR23 ... seeing thats the Newest recvr they have right now, other than Genies.
Seeing he Has a HR54, he could also swap the HR23 out for a Client, if he wanted too ...
I think thats 2 options I would inquire with D* about.

I would call D* and see what they are going to offer you, that recvr is ancient.

I called and spoke with the loyalty department. They're sending me a new (refurbished) DVR, most likely an HR24. Should be here by Wednesday.

The protection plan makes this sorta thing easy. They never said anything about returning the HR23 nor the card in it. Maybe those instruction come when I set up the new one. It's been so long since I've done this I've forgotten.

I appreciate the input from both of y'all.

Glad you got an upgrade coming ...
It will be a refurbish one as they haven't been making them for awhile now ...
That being said, I have several Refurbs and they work fine.

That would have been my suggestion.

I would only install HR24, HR44 and HR54

The HR34, 23, 22 and 21’s are junk.

An HR24-500 arrived tonight via UPS in good condition. After calling DirecTV to activate, I got it up and running but I couldn't connect it to the internet nor the other DVR's in the house. I initiated a software update and after the download and reboot, it connected perfectly.

I don't have to return the HR23 to DirecTV, but I'm curious if I need to keep the access card or shred it. More than likely I'll recycle the reciever. I've gone online to the DirecTV website and the HR23 no longer appears under "My Equipment" while the new HR24 does show up. Thoughts?

i would call them!!! they used to want the smart cards back and they would send you a mailer to mail them back. they wanted the cards back so that they could download any PPV ect ect and bill you for em
