Have been buying 4K UHD movies on VUDU with my Roku, but my brother who works for Best Buy says there's nothing better than 4K Blu-rays. They seem to be more expensive than buying the streaming copies though. What is the consensus here?

I honestly cannot tell the difference between 4K Vudu and 4K discs, maybe it is because Vudu encoding and bitrate is so good or it could be my 53 year old bifocal eyes, the Movies Anywhere app ( just link your Vudu account) uses a higher bitrate, but again cannot tell a difference.

I don't know if there is a difference in quality. I do know that if you 'own' a streaming movie you really don't OWN it. I'll buy a physical copy of a movie or music any day. ;)

BINGO! And the AQ is generally better on discs.
Of course by the time you can afford some of this gear and media, the ears that your bifocal temples (the official term for the long arms on eyeglasses) rest on are probably not what they once were.;)

Hard media often gives you choices of surround technology (Dolby vs DTS) and sometimes additional languages.

Thanks for the tip about linking my Vudu account to Movies Anywhere. I didn't know that was possible.

As far as audio quality, my only 4K UHD TV is in the bedroom and I'm outputting optical audio to a soundbar via Toslink. The audio from Vudu seems very good.

You must not have gotten the memo that came out. By the way Vudu has been sold to Fandango. So look for some changes.

You don't own it huh?.Then maybe they should not be selling them? The day my movies disappear I'm pretty sure there will be a class action lawsuit.
And for the answer which is better Blurays have more information on them, but like the other poster says with these old eyes it don't matter.

This is from Vudu's terms and conditions, which could be concerning:

"VUDU’s authority to provide Content to you is subject to restrictions imposed by the movie
studios and other distributors that make Content available to VUDU (“Content Providers”).
These Content Providers may designate limited periods of time when VUDU is prohibited from
renting, selling and/or streaming certain Content to you, including Content that you have

previously purchased."

The technicality comes down to what is it that you're buying. With media, the content owners say that you're buying the disc and packaging and a license to view the content for as long as it holds together.

Streaming services have other terms that they don't widely advertise and your assumptions/reasoning/personal opinions do not outweigh their terms. Further, the terms are subject to change based on their policies as well as those of the content providers. The use of copy flags pretty well establishes the idea that you're not encouraged to keep and use the content forever. DMCA clearly states that defeating copy protection (whether breaking encryption or defeating HDCP mechanisms) is against the law.

If I remember right VUDU took over Ultraviolet. How many people had accounts with them. I got an email saying that Ultraviolet was shutting down. So some of my DVD's would have been lost if VUDU hadn't stepped in.

I bit the bullet and bought this 4K blu-ray player from Dell. Best Buy had it for the same price, but Dell.com Rewards (free to join) gives free expedited shipping and 10% back to use for future purchases.

And this will be my first disc :)
