Free Previews Discussion Thread - December 2020

In this free preview of League Pass, Dish is using the RSN's that they used to have access to and not using the league feeds. The Fox RSN's and Altitude for sure. Being in Chicago, I can't tell if they are using NBC Sports Chicago on 5007, but my guess is they are. (You can tell that the Fox RSN's are not using the league feed because the tickers come on - the league feeds are clean feeds)
They have been using NBC Sports Chicago as a source. They are not even using the league feeds for games that are not on the RSNs they have access too. No Celtics/Pacers (Ironically the Pacers are on FOX Sports) and no Toronto/Philly game tonight either.

Wow - I didn't realize that until you mentioned it. Just checked and sure enough nothing there on any of those channels. I wouldn't want to be an out of market Celtics/Packers/Toronto/Philly fan who paid for the NBA Team Pass for access to their one team.

There has been a few others, know Spurs/Toronto on Saturday was not there either. Was a OTA game for San Antonio so at least that one was not on FOX Sports. Hopefully it is just temporary as I am sure they are taking calls from quite a few people if they purchased Team Pass. All these games are on DirecTV & Indemand (Cable) and the streaming LP services too so hopefully they can figure it out. I am rather certain Dish has used league provided feeds in the past.

The problem is that those league-provided feeds were all standard-def, and Dish has chosen not to offer the package in standard-def at all this year.

no Toronto/Philly game tonight either.
Interestingly, though, when I checked a 76ers game earlier in the preview (when I posted about the postponed game channels showing World Poker Tour) Dish actually did have the NBC Sports Philadelphia feed, even though Dish has never carried that channel.

NBA League Pass subscribers are not being charged yet, while it is still in free preview. So, hopefully Dish gets this worked out before they get to games that people are actually paying for.

I noticed that today's Memphis/Boston game is listed for League Pass. And it appears the free preview is over as when I look at the info for the game, I see the $$ logo now.

Where? I just checked channels 5002 and 5019, and all I see are "Boston Celtics HD" and "Memphis Grizzlies HD" respectively.

Dah - I meant it is NOT listed... same issue as the other day...
Okay. You also said that you looked at the info for the game, so I got confused. Anyway, according to a post in the NBA League Pass thread (I linked it earlier in this thread) Dish is giving NBA League Pass subscribers until January 12 to cancel the package without any penalty, apparently. So, I am guessing that either Dish expects it to take that long to resolve this issue, or they are giving existing subscribers a "trial" period. In other words, "Try the limited package this way, and see if you still like it. If not, you can cancel without having to pay, even though the season has already started."

Noticed you posted up the January free previews. I wish Dish would just add BBC America to the line up for everyone. It's always in free preview anyway at least 6 months of the year.

It was in my line-up all year long. I had International Basic as my core package for only $15 per month. I just dropped it at the beginning of the week, switching to the Locals Only core package. Now, lo and behold, BBC America is back for me again. :)

Dish must of got a lot of complaints. They addressed the missing games issue:

Please note: some NBA games will not be available with NBA League Pass or NBA Team Pass on DISH. See below for the list of affected games and where you can watch:
12/29: Celtics vs Pacers
12/29: Raptors vs 76ers
12/30: Grizzlies vs Celtics
12/31: Knicks vs Raptors
You can still watch these games via NBA.com:
Go to watch.nba.com/league-pass
Select "Sign In", then "Select TV Provider"
Select DISH, then log in using your DISH account credentials

Hopefully they resolve it so the games are on actual dish network at some point. Assuming people watching on the free preview this solution would not work.

This may be why Dish did not even bother to advertise the free preview, at least not on their mydish Free Previews page. If people were unaware of the free preview, that would reduce the number of complaints. I am guessing that Dish is not on very good terms with the NBA right now. Dish is no longer carrying the league-provided standard-def feeds, and Dish did not include NBA TV in the NBA League Pass preview this time, like they have usually done in years past. This may be because the sports leagues are protesting in solidarity with the RSN's. "Hey, you are not delivering our games to in-market viewers, so we are not going to make it easy for you to continue delivering those games to out-of-market viewers, either." This does not bode well for the upcoming NHL Center Ice and MLB Extra Innings seasons on Dish. It also does not bode well for any future contract negotiations for Dish to continue to offer these out-of-market sports packages.

Test post for crodrules who cannot seem to post to this thread...
In case anyone was wondering what TheKrell meant by that:

Doesn't Dish usually hide the sports package channels once the free preview is over? I am surprised I can still see the channels at this point, considering there were two other uplinks that occurred for free previews ending/starting. I would have thought that the NBA channels would have been updated in those.

Yes, they do normally hide them, although I have seen it take much longer for Dish to get around to finally doing that, especially with the NBA channels. I remember at least one time when the channels were not hidden until about a month later. Another time, the NBA channels remained visible all season long. NBA TV had been included in that preview. So, although any live games remained blacked out after the preview ended, I still had access to the rest of NBA TV's content (replays, etc.) absolutely free. I guess that Dish does still want to "advertise" for these packages by leaving the channels visible in the guide. This is why I still see the Boston Bruins (NHL) and Baltimore Orioles (MLB) channels, even without a subscription. I would expect the Boston Celtics channel to get similar treatment, even after the rest of the NBA channels get hidden.

For those who still need a fix for their holiday music addiction, be sure to check out Holiday Instrumentals (channel 927), and Viva La Navidad (channels 892 and 941), still in free preview on their regular channel numbers. Also, for those who subscribe to the Dish CD channels, Traditional Holidays is still on channel 962. This is your last chance to check these channels out, before the themes change back to their regular programming.
