No RF out on the HR20? (And other technical Q's)

30-second skip question:

Uh oh! I just read a review of the HR20, and it said there is no 30-second skip? I'm shocked. It said that when you hit the skip button, it fast forwards at 6x! WTF?!!! That is totally unacceptable.

BTW, is there at least a 10 second skip back button, for when you over shoot on the skip forward?

It can go from 1 to 6 seconds, depending on how it feels for that day.:D

According to Earl, skip will never happen. This is what happens when a program provider gets to create their own DVR. They get to decide how much of the commercials we don't see.

If I am not totally mistaken, DVR software makers have been all but bitch-slapped over that 30sec feature thanks to the NAB, advertisers, and the like. It seems to be a dwindling feature on the newest boxes or at minimum, a very well hidden "trick".

This is why until I can easily and cost effectively archive my HD programming to an optical format of my choosing; I refuse to "upgrade" to any HD DVR. I will stick with my SA standard DVR with full networking and commercial skip abilities. It will record great downrezzed HD channels that I can archive if I wish. 99.99% of the time any HD program I want I can see as it airs so no HD DVR is a huge loss.

Did they remove the skip from the DirecTivos too? Holy crap!
Cable DVR's, E* DVR's, and SA Tivos have a true 30 second skip. So, maybe Liberty will restore it to the D* boxes, now that Fox is out of the picture.

In the mean time, I cannot accept a 30-second "slip". It is the single most-used feature of the DVR in my household. It looks like I'll be sticking with C* for a while. (E* is basically out of the running, now that they cost more than C*)

Everything you may or may not want to know about the HR20.

Thanks! I'll check there periodically to see how the software improves, and most importantly, when they add a true 30-second skip. Until then, I'll just have to slug along with my C* 3412. I'm in one of the better C* areas. Other than price, I have no real complaints.

I use the ffwd x2 on my R15 and it works pretty well.

But I do like my Directivo alot better.

DirecTivos still require the "S-P-S-30-S" code to do the skip, but it is still there.

For me, FF and Skip are totally different. Comparing the two is like comparing a Shuttlecraft to the Transporter. I don't wanna get there quickly. I wanna just be there. (without seeing any billboards on the way, either.)

See I never used the 30 second skip with my Tivo's (had 3 altogether), so I never missed it.

You will never like the R15 or HR20.

You're cable DVR must be really good there, Comcast here sucks.

How can you use a DVR without ever using the skip? It is the single most important feature of a DVR, other than the ability to record programming. That's like owning a refrigerator, but never using the ice-maker. Do you enjoy commercials? Do you only watch PBS, HBO, or other non-commercial programming?

Does the Tivo skip not work well or something? The skip on my old Dish 721, 508, and current Comcast 3412 was/is instantaneous. Press the button, you're 30 seconds further. Press it 4 times, you're 2 minutes down.

It shouldn't take me 9-10 seconds to get through 2:30 of commercials. I shouldn't have to see the ugly mugs of those commercial actors smiling at me with their chicklet teeth, or the logos of the products they're shilling. It's just that simple.

As you can tell, I'm truly shocked at this glaring feature ommission of the HR20.

I prefer the skip to end ability to the 30 second skip.

I can ffwdx3 pretty good and its not that bad of a wait.

When your watching a recorded show or a live show you hit the button for the 30 sec skip and it will take you to the end of the show or the beginning if you're at the end.

I use this alot, its like the skip to hash but it does the whole show.

Edit: It doesn't work if the 30 second skip is enabled.

Why skip to the end? If you want to stop watching, why not just press "stop"? To go back to the beginning with my 3412, I can press "stop", then "start from beginning". I believe my E* 721 and 508 had similar functionality.

What is "skip to hash"?
