NBCU, Turner, CNN to Launch HD Networks

By James Hibberd
USA Network, Sci Fi Channel, TBS, Cartoon Network, CNN and other channels are readying to launch simulcast high-definition networks by the end of the year.
Story continues below...
OAS_AD("Middle1");

CNN announced plans to launch an HD network in September at its opening session at the Television Critics Association's semiannual press tour, while an NBC Universal spokesperson confirmed the company will launch a "suite of HD networks." NBCU would not set an exact time table. A Turner spokesperson also confirmed HD networks for TBS and Cartoon Network.

The news comes a day after DirecTV's announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that it has HD carriage agreements with 60 cable networks. DirecTV cited USA, Sci Fi, FX, CNN, Cartoon Network, TBS and several other channels among the brands with agreements. The satellite provider plans to launch 100 HD channels by the end of the year as part of its strategy to expand its HD offerings.

Though all major cable networks are eventually expected to have HD simulcasts, none of the networks DirecTV cited had previously announced plans to launch HD networks.

CNN announced its plans Tuesday morning at its panel. Spokespeople for NBC Universal and Turner confirmed plans to launch their HD networks shortly after. A spokesman for Fox Cable Networks Group representing FX had not yet returned a call.

The confirmations represent the largest number of networks to commit to HD upgrades all at once. DirecTV's launching of two new satellites in 2007, combined with the satellite service's push for more HD content, has been a tipping point for a host of major networks previously biding their time before taking the plunge to HD.

The moves will dramatically expand the number of HD viewing options for consumers, who have long griped about the scarcity of HD content.

All that article really says is CNN-HD in September, and some more sometime later. I'm witholding my enthusiasm until there's more definitive info on timetables.

You'll see TBS-HD well before baseball season next season.

That's when TBS starts their coverage on Sunday and it would be an excellent showcase for them.

Hmmmm, where are all those E* people who where talking crap about D* and its subs!? :D

Once these vapor-ware HD channels actually come out, I suspect both E* and D* will get them in fairly short order.

I wonder if NBC was happy that D* announced the new channels yesterday before THEY announced them.

2007 is here and there are only 350+ days left. I want to see the deliverance of DirecTv on these channels. So the remaining questions.

1. Will they actual deliver? This puts pressure on the channels to get HD content and spend the money on it. Most HD channels have slowly increased their HD channel library. Given this don't look for these channels to be 100% HD from the beginning.

2. Will MPEG4 be solution to go back to "decent" rez and bitrates with DirecTv? I did not like their responses to the press but we will have to wait and watch what happens.

3. Will this push the other providers to get their act together? Will TimeWarner let DirecTv carry CNN-HD and Cartoon Network HD without carrying it in their own system?

4. Can E* keep up?

These are my four questions. The clock is ticking 350+ days left until D* delivers on its promise.

# 4 is my biggest concern. D* can deliver it all, and it won't matter a whit to me, unless it forces E* to up the ante.

I highly doubt these channels are going hd with 24/7 of hd content anyways

more likely following the suit of tnt, A&E etc

so it's not like having them is a big deal

I love it when press releases are worded the way this one is. Turner is getting ready to make a committee planning the planning committe to make plans to plan the building of an HD channel. LOL!

When it launches, wake me. :)

See ya

Sounds like a Dunder-Mifflin kind of strategy. :D :D

I really hope this is true since I have D* til at least October.

With all due respect especially considering you are a staff member , but that truly is the most absurd statement I have seen on these forums yet. And I read Vurbano's posts all of the time.

Flyingj,

I agreed with BFG and (we rarely agree :) ). or do you think 24/7 HD of repeats is a relevant channel. We know from past experience that there has not being one single channel that went HD 24/7 with relevant HD content. It takes them almost 2 years to compile a good library. Should we expect every Sci-Fi programming in HD when it launches?

Yeah look at ESPN, they still to this day don't broadcast everything in HD.
