Are we ever going to see External Storage for 622?

Has anyone tried to plug in a USB HD? Maybe the feature is working? They demo'd the feature to me at CES.

JULY of what year is the question? This is Dish you know. I think they have promised nbr features for the 500 series of dvrs now for over two years and they haven't delivered yet.

Tell me about it.

I have a 508 and a 721, as well as a ViP622. I am happy with my service, but I'm certainly frustrated over announcements of product enhancements that are repeatedly delayed or never come to fruition.

Then share all details with us - we don't aware of the life presentation a 211 as DVR.

He may be referring to speculation in the forum - not a Dish announcement - that with USB External Storage you might be able to connect the USB box to a ViP211 and watch recordings there. Or maybe even the USB External Storage would convert a ViP211 to a DVR.

Stay tuned for more speculation.

Now that would be real cool! If that doesn't work, then they can at least allow the Vip622 to serve the 211 DVR functions.

There are lots of people out there who get paid big bucks for speculating. Often many of them dont know any more than the average Joe Schmoe :wave

In any case, when something is there 'for future use' I would hope that they would actually use it. Of course they are not obliged to.

From what I recall, any USB external HD will work so hardware will not have to be purchased from Dish. Thus we could buy one of the new 750 gigers and save 60+ hours of HD on the external hard drive. Added to the internal HD and you will get 90+ hours of HD!

The unit they showed me was hooked up to a 622. Hit the DVR button and another menu item showed under the normal DVR menu-- something like 'USB blah blah'. Recorded events can be 'moved to the USB drive.

Not much more too it, they said something about Q1. I'm just looking forward to getting more capacity.

I would confess your "USB HD" brought amok in my brain after mentioned 211 :). Now I see what you did mean that time - ViP622 !!!
We're aware how the model works with external USB enclosure. Not 211.
Just in case, you can use IDE or SATA disks in the enclosure.

Conceivably though, the 211 could become a DVR with a USB attached hard drive - all the necessary hardware is there to make it work anyway. A talented linux system engineer is the missing component.

The 211 is a single tuner; so you could only record what you're watching from the satellite.

It might be possible to watch from one tuner (OTA or SAT) and record from the other (SAT or OTA as appropriate).

Best,

They won't ever make a 211 into a DVR via a USB attachment if it were even possible.
What they could do and I believe talked about on the boards before, is have a 211 access recordings from a 622. But I am still not sold on the fact that is possible do to possible buffering limitations on a 211. I can see a 622 sharing with a 622 with no problem and a 625 sharing with a 622 or vice-versa (but would be limited to SD recordings).
I don't know what or when anything will happen but I will be content with archiving via usb on a 622; and anything else will be gravy.

I recall that there was a problem reported getting it to work with 500GB, but that they expected to fix that.

Navy:

I think it was drives > 500GB (ie the 750 and (announced) 1TB) spindles. The internal drive would have the same issues and Dish announced the 622-1 which will have a 500GB internal drive.

Damn, I remember when I thought 1GB was a lot of space; and now it's less memory than I run on my laptop!

Cheers,

DISH on Deman
