Questions for Dish Network

I don't understand why that is such a hard concept to understand. Scott clearly said he was looking for technical quesitons...
Because we have a very self absorbed, "me" society today and many people think they are entitled to do what they want regardless of suggested protocol.

In their world, the "I want now" out-weighs any inconvenience (often not even perceived) caused to others.

A classic example is having to park so far away from the super-market because of all the shopping carts scattered helter-skelter all over the parking lot. Their desire to leave out weighs any inconvenience caused to the next person. In many cases it doesn't even cross their mind.

I would like to know with the price of FLASH memory falling if Dish plans on adding memory to the DVR units so that the hard drive does not have to run all the time. This would make the units quiter and stop some of the heat problems. While I like my 622, I also liked the quiteness of my old 501 at night since that unit actually shut down the hard drive at night when I powered down the unit.

It also would be nice to be able to revert to a known working copy of the operating system when buggy upgrades are sent. I would do anything to get 4.03 off my 622

Sounds like an echo. If I didn't read your profile, I'd think you were from Southern California ... "ME!!" is the state motto here.

Technical question(s):

When will closed captioning be retransmitted correctly, or at all on the LiLHD channels. Wasn't, then was (but badly), then only on some, now back to none.

What's the technical issue involved with not being able to do this?

Why, on some HD stations, TV1 doesn't show CC but TV2 does? I am aware that the ViP 622 decodes for TV1 and the television set decodes for TV2.

For all questions, assume that I'm familiar with all methods for setting up CC on my sets.

OK I am going to throw a question out to be ask and I will be curious to see what kind of response E* will have... Since I know there are quite a few sight impaired users out there who own Dish Receivers what kind of software could be created to make the receivers more user friendly for the blind or people with low vision... For the most part I have all channels memorized, but if I want to know the tech part of the receiver I really have to rely more and more on my wife to help me with that part... It would be a TV version of a screen reader that if the user chooses could be activated or if it is not a sight impaired person this function could be turned off... CC

I recently switched from TWC and had a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR.. couple of features I miss:

- an optional turn on channel (every time you turn on the 622 it goes to that channel). I semi-work-around this with a timer for a tuner every morning at 5am to my "turn on channel"
- Timers: I'd like to be able to tell the DVR to record only this show, only new episodes, and only when this show is in THIS timeslot. Currently (it could be new user error), I believe I have to pick between either new only, or in timeslot only, but cannot select both.
- an option to restrict a timer to HD-only material

That "turn on" channel that Passport has is nice. I always set mine for Discovery HD Theatre. Your timer idea only works once a day though.... :)

The timer choices are like say. The choice between All, New, Once, Weekly, Daily, and M-F are single options, no combinations. No user error. You can apparently choose the program you want, tell it "weekly", but if the show you just selected is on Wednesday, does weekly mean "once a week on Wednesdays" ?? You might not want that in case it moves from 8pm on Wednesday to 8pm on Friday.

Use DishPass to have it record HD only programs.

Since I believe you mentioned three new receivers are to be unveiled...when they inevitably say they are "coming soon", use that as an opportunity to ask if that means in the foreseeable week, month, year, or decade. We're never quite sure what "coming soon" means to E*.

Also...what do they expect the upgrade paths to be to these new receivers, whatever they are.

OH...and ask what the hold up is on SNY-HD, too. :)

I don't have land line phone service and I'll be darned if I will pay extra for not having a phone line hooked up to my receivers. So I need to know when the 612 is scheduled for release, I need to upgrade from my 912's so I can get the extra HD channels on MPEG 4.

I've actually been interested in the 612 as well, but from the general lack of interest in it (even in posts on the board here), I've about given up that it will be released. It's been a long time since it was unveiled.

As for the phone line charge...I'm in the same boat but I gave in and pay the fee. Even though the 612 is single output, I believe it is still dual-tuner, so I would expect the phone line requirement would still apply to it, same as the 622. Can't imagine E* passing up on that.

If this is true, that the 612 is not coming anymore, then when is the 722 sheduled for release. I'd like to get around the HDMI issues mentioned by present owners and lessees.

Loss of Guide info for OTA sub-channels

Like Post # 35 I would like to know if we will be able to get the guide info back for OTA sub-channels. It would be nice to know why they removed the Guide information after having it available for several days. The rumor was that the additional Guide information confused the older receivers. Please tell them that we are willing to pay the $5.00/month for local channels not because we watch the satellite locals but because we use the Guide information. Having a complete Guide that includes the subchannels would be very useful and appreciated.

Something for Vt / NH / NY. Either the Burlington-Plattsburg HD LiLs like they implied LAST year or NESN-HD.

Q: Are there any plans for restoring picture quality back to "true" HD levels? This means 1920x1080 resolution with a decent bitrate.

Q: What are the plans for replacing the aging/failing satellites? Will the bandwidth provided by new satellites be used to improve HD picture quality?
