How can E* keep adding HD?

They already have the contracts on the channels they are putting up with MPEG4. They are just planning on a full MPEG2 to MPEG4 migration. Both providers will be planning this out over the next couple of years and all us, the consumer, will benefit.

Maybe if possible if you have the time you can explain how we the consumer will benefit?.I would really like to hear this one.

They will be able to offer a better picture with less bandwidth for both HD and SD channels. Wouldn't you like to see th SD PQ improve also?

I don't see how just changing from MPEG2 to MPEG4 will improve PQ. Can you explain please.

Considering all SAT companies lower the resolution of there HD and SD channels to save bandwidth. So if they can send you the SD or HD channel with less bandwith without lowering the resolution then they will offer you a better PQ. Does this mean that they will do it? No, but they have the capabilities to do it if they want.

Why?.Because for $3. a month it's really a no brainer.Especially if your like me 80 miles away from the transmitters.Plus in our area we have a serious multipath problems. So you would be looking at at least a six foot directional antenna with a rotor not a pretty sight at all.I get a kick when one of our local station's transmitters goes down. They apologize over the air for the weak signal, but the signal from Directv coming from the station is still crisp and clear.Mark me down as one happy Directv locals customer.;)

Exactly.Its 2007 not 1950!

And I'm only 30 miles from a transmitter. But guess what Not everyone lives in the city or the plains states.

I didn't know there was a picture problem .Maybe its your tv!

No its with how E* and D* downres their channels. I guess you have never seen digital cable and how much clearer it is than both D* and E*. Or do you just have the I love my provider blinders on?

I have had both E* and D*.The PQ has been the same on both services on my 50"
RPTV.The only difference I have heard of is from subscribers who run the signals through a meter and testify to a difference. These eyes for some reason cannot see this difference. Therefore to me there is no problem.:)

I never said that there was a difference between D* and E*. I just had stated that the benifit from going to MPEG4 was they could increase the resolution of the SD channels also and make for a better picture. And since I have seen a better picture elsewhere I feel that E* and D* both have problems.

Ok thanks for explaining.Don't know about resolution but I have heard that going from MPEG2 to MPEG4 does reduce the bandwith.Which will become a must have for HD.For SD I have no idea but I have heard that E* will some day convert over.
I have yet to hear if D* considers this a good option.:)

Personally I think you are making way too many assumptions. Since as I read it, DISH is saying they are going to mirror their existing MPEG2 offering on ONLY 2 sats but in MPEG4, I am hard pressed to think they can accomplish that AND INCREASE bandwidth at the same time. Let's see it first.

You are correct it is an assumption, but E* has already done this with some of there channels that have moved to pure MPEG4. If they do it for all the current ones that have moved they could possibly do it for all the others. And why couldn't they do this? They have already found a way to put more HD on each transponder with increasing the resolution.

And if you would have read all of my comments, I stated that they would not have to do this but they would have the capacity to do it. So the only assumption that was really made is that they could do it. I never once said that they would.

Give me a cable company name and state where I could see this Breath taking SD and HD pictures.I have 5 cable providers alone in a 50 mile area of my house. and Guess What !!!! I can't see on bit of difference!!

All three cable providers around me (TW, Insight and WOW) all have major issues with their analog channels but their digital tier look great. Never once said anything about better HD. I personally would have cable today if it was not for the crappy analog channels.

Hah.. well man has this thread taken off! :) Rad, so there’s the first two of ten of those satt I showed you; 0 ? Any doubt on the other 8? ;0

Anyways that aside, I see that soooo many D* fans go on about how dish won’t have this sport and dish won’t have that sport and they are cheap this and that... well who says all of us E* fan boys like sports; 0 I could personally care less about baseball... I find it to be just about the most boring sport in the world! ;0 I don’t mind football, but I can certainly live without it and the super bowl is more than enough football to keep me happy... and as far as price haggling... I am happy that Charlie doesn’t pay any old crazy price and that he argues to keep prices fair. That benefits everyone from himself down to every customer and even people on other providers who let him do the dirty work of keeping prices down.

Either way, I think this is a great move to finally get rid of MPEG-2. They can offer incentives and then finally shut the old service down and have two spare satellites when done! ;0 Honestly, how can anyone knock that; 0 and to all those asking about contracts, why do you need a contract for a channel you own the rights to already? You are just delivering your product in a different format!!!?? Do some of you guys actually understand what mpeg 4 is or are you confusing it for HD? ;0 Anyways... that’s my 2 cents on the issue...!

Spend another 2 cents for spellchecker, please.

Rad, so there’s the first two of ten of those satt I showed you

Well, are you 100% sure?

- The FCC APPLICATION that you provided is for slots 61.9, 67, 77.2, 86.3, 110, 114.5, 119, 124, 128.6 and 147.6. Scott says he's been told the plan is for 86.5 and 97, so you have one close and one not on your list. Plus is it wise for the CEO of Echostar to make an announcement about offering service from satellite positions that the FCC hasn't approved yet?

- The details that Scott put in his post for what's going on these two new sats is
200 LIL Cities in Standard Definion, HD Locals to 100 Cities,1000 Standard Definition Channels, 200 International Channels. I don't see any mention of national HD channels

- What two new satellites will be used by the end of this year to supply this new service since Charlie said that this new MPEG4 service would be up by EOY 2007?

So there:p
