Scott's Rumor Confirmed: Seven New HD Nationals Coming to Dish in August/September

if DirecTV's new HD channels look as good as their current MPEG4 channels do, then the word HD Lite may just be a memory.

I am very surprised at how GOOD DirecTV's MPEG4 looks. (DirecTV's MPEG2 HD on the other hand looks like... well CRAP.)

Not to throw fuel into the fire.. but I'm curious as to something. Your sig says you've switched to D* as of July 6th. I believe you were with Comcast previously. Max resolution and high bit rates? Are you getting that with D* currently?

What will you do if D* launches their new HD channels and they're still HD-Lite, to ensure maximum channel availability? :)

Again, just pure simple curiosity.

This is funny, I turned sigs off for better readability. I had no idea he was a D* sub.

Must be slow on the D* forums

-snip-
The future is low bitrate, nothing we can do about it. I'm sorry but they got us hooked / getting used to softer pictures what can you do?

Right on the money.

I think some of us just enjoy hearing that we're getting HD channels, whether they actually ARE HD (by some reasonable definition) or not. It's marketing. MY provider has more channels it's calling HD than YOURS does, nah, nah, nah! So what if picture quality is somewhere halfway between SD and the old, "true" HD?

Goes with the general decline in societal standards, we're just going to have to get used to it.

Now don't get me wrong: I'm not really complaining, even though it sounds like it. I LIKE Dish and I LIKE these additions. It's just that trying to hang onto the old standards for HD seems like such a waste of time and effort.

If a person looks at OTA HD and Dish Network's offering of the exact same channel, it is easy to see the difference. With more and more HD DVD & Blu-ray players coming out, I would think the general public is going to start asking some serious questions about HD quality from television broadcast providers. Believe it or not, there are people that want HD to be Real HD! Go ahead and say what you want, but some segments of society do have high standards! That might be hard for some of you to accept, but it is true.

Further, I sincerely hope Dish Network delivers HD rather than dangle carrots in front of people. Let me give you one example of what I mean! We were told that the VOOM FIOS line from VOOM to Dish network had to be worked on. Once that line was restored, we were to see full resolution and bit rates for VOOM. We haven't heard a single word about that line, since the topic was conveniently swept under the rug with that announcement. I for one grew tired of it! Further, flaming people for wanting HD as it should be delivered is your option! So, BRING IT.

One last thing! I loved being a Dish Network customer! And it hurt like Hell to leave!

I think by this year next time, we'll at be getting full resolution and Im basing that on the 1080p rumors from Scott and the bid Jan CES announcement he says is coming.

For the short term, Id rather have 50 1200x1080 channels than 10 1900x1080 and be stuck with crappy SD.

These guys that say "give me full hd or give me nothing" are full of it.

And so you jumped to the leader in HD-Lite, who will give you nothing new in HD until September, at the earliest. Seems to me you might have enjoyed your crappy Dish HD a little longer, anyway, instead of the even more crappy Direct HD.

If E* had 10 full rez channels, and all other providers had 50 1200x1080 channels, guess whod be losing customers.

And all you guys would still be saying "E*, booooooooo".

That being said, we should stop arguing about it because neither party is going to change their mind. This actually reminds me of the argument with a guy that stated HBOHD looked about as good as 480p.

At the bottom of your posts it says the undisputed leader in HD. IS that true? NOPE! You don't have much HD at all.

I look at Directv's network channels. I push a button to an OTA of the exact same thing and BINGO! Directv is delivering! And it is only going to get BETTER! I'm glad I switched. In ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC, I'm getting what I'm paying for. And I think I'm going to get more of the same in quantities!

The setting that you base this post on is not going to happen. And as far as what I would say, you don't have that right either.

E* also just announced 6 more HD channels coming August 15.So that would make 37 HD channels for me. How many does Directv have? I know all about Directvs plans. But E* has plans too. and while your waiting for Directvs plans to take shape you can enjoy a whopping 10 HD channels. and I'll enjoy 37.

Guys

I don't see a difference between OTA and the Dish version. More importantly, neither does my wife.

Wow, these are all pretty good channels too. Well MHD might be kinda iffy at this time, but I guess they still qualify as a Major channel since its riding on MTV's legacy.

From what little I've seen of MHD, it's much better than MTV. For one thing, it actually has music on it. :)

I might be wrong, but I was at a friends house in Vegas, and I clicked to it a couple times- it always had a concert on, and they all looked great. I think it's closer to Rave than MTV (but hopefully with more variety.)

Problem is after you watch it two weeks, youve seen everything for two mo's. Hopefully itll get better as more providers add it.

it does not appear that Discovery HD Theater is going anywhere.

in this image, posted by scott, you can see that BOTH discoveryHD and discoveryHDtheater are shown as HD channels.

Good! Maybe we can finally get Mythbusters in HD!

Discovery HD Theater really bears little to no resemblance to Discovery Channel.

They're going to have to put it back on it's old channel number. I appreciate these new mirrored channels for channels like NGC HD and TNT HD that are truly mirrored, but it's slightly annoying for the ones that are different like Discovery. If I dial, say, Food Network directly, I get the HD version, where perhaps I really want to watch Iron Chef on the regular channel.
