Bell's HD future??

Not sure... depends on how much the 8PSK modulators are at the uplink center to purchase, install, test, and support.

Yeah but how much cost to Bell to do nothing and wait for Nimiq 5 in 2009 ? They will lose a lot of customers for the competition.

It's a very bad planning from Bell, now they need to do a migration in a short period of time.

Lets start some speculation...

Now that BCE has been sold to the Ontario Teachers Pension fund (and if Telus does not trump their bid) what will happen to the perpetually money losing Expressvu? Will it be sold? It can not be worth that much (~3-4 billion). So where do they get the money for these upgrades? SC is moving to 8SPK and can move to mpeg4 when they have to because non capable recievers (500 and 201 sidecars) are being replaced now. I think Bell is introducing mpeg 4 receviers because Echostar is not supplying older models to them anymore. The best case scenerio for current subscribers is if they offer a free lease (as long as you subscribe) for the 6000/6100/9200's. This is similar to what Dish did. This is, of course, if they actually find the money to upgrade to 8SPK and/or MPEG4.

It is fun to speculate on their fate now that I am a part owner (teacher).

But Star Choice will complete the migration to 8PSK by the end of the year and add 7 to 10 new HD channels. So they go around 30-35 HD channels, not bad.

I don't know about the network of Rogers, it is full or they have space to add HD channels ? Bell need to add Showcase HD, National Geographic HD and MMore HD to be competitive against Rogers.

In Quebec, Bell has 5 french HD channels less than Videotron and Cogeco (TVA HD, TQS HD, ZTele HD, Historia HD, Vrak HD).

When I mentioned that BCE has been sold in an earlier post I should have also pointed out that they are the parent company of Expressvu (and also part owner of CTV globemedia).

Here is a link to cbc's website about the deal:

Maybe teachers would put some money to complete the FTTN project before 2011 to go with IPTV ?

But they need to upgrade the wireless network too.

Did Bell announce when they may be coming out? Would be nice to have before hockey season starts!
Rumors were that we were supposed to have our 9200's (942) swapped with 9400's (622) earlier this year. But of course that didn't happen.
Bell is notoriously quiet about reciever replacements until they happen, and generally don't like updating them too often.

The new receivers is supposed to come at the end of the year (Q4 2007) but Bell has no planned to upgrade to MPEG 4 before 2009...

Are they replacing them for free? And how do you get one when you don't live in Canada?

The rumors were that they were going to, but I doubt it, as I don't believe Bell has ever done a reciever swap before.

I personally would have no problem swapping recievers as my wife owns a house there. I would just take it with me and swap during one of our trips

Or if Bell doesn't want to swap all receivers, they could offers a rebate on brand new MPEG 4 receivers for actual HD customers, like 50% :D

Maybe Teachers will invest money in the IPTV project and sell Bell Express Vu.

Expressvu satellite has $0 resale value. BCE must dedicate all infrastruture spending on upgrading landlines in Ontario & Quebec where they trail their cable competitors in both internet and tv services. Expressvu satellite customers in these areas will switch to Expressvu IPTV when it is available since it will offer more value than Expressvu satellite. There will be no more investment in satellite and when Nimiq 4 & 5 become operational, Expressvu will lose most American customers as there is little spill over of signal into US with these new footprints.
