HR2x / HR34 External Hard Drive FYI/Support (eSATA)

Thats over my head. Huh?

That is the type of ESATA cable, external are different than internal.
I actually think there are three types put not sure about the third.
If you look at the end of the cable, one is straight across while the other has an "L" shape to it.

This is not a real good example, but it is a "I to L" esata cable.
If you look close at the cable ends, you will see one has an L shape to it while the other is straight across.
eSATA Cables USA : SATA External Cable Shielded eSATA to SATA (Type I) to (Type L) esata cable to standard sata style converter cable

This is why awhile back I inquired as to which was needed.
Normally they are one or the other, not both.

The only problem I have is that with the 750 your essentially only gaining 450 (or less) seeing the HR20 has at least a 300 gb HD in it already.

You could always replace the drive inside and use the 300 GB in a computer or something. That way you use everything. That is if you are not afraid of violating the rental agreement.

I doubt that I would do that, due to the fact that it IS a rental and would need to replace it when it gets turned back in for whatever reason.
If I Owned it, it would be another story.

IF you placed a larger HD in the unit, provided it would fit, wouldn't that one become the same as the one there now and be unavailable when it's all hooked up, seeing it's now the Internal drive ???

Brewer4, everything went perfect it's nice to have a 750gig hd for my hr20-700, talk about space!

Excellent to hear. I've been very happy with mine for the past few weeks. The true test will be September when I know I will be pushing them pretty hard. Also happy how quiet the drive is. Was pretty easy huh?

It would be a larger drive eliminating the need for an external one for many.

Yeah but what are you going to do if you ruin the machine? You would be responsible for paying full price to replace it.

My recommendation is don't do it as Ramy suggested. Enclosures are $20-30 and you can put the drive anywhere without having to crack open a case and violate anything with regard to the unit. They are really quiet and only require the length of eSATA cable and extra power source. Sure its a waste for the internal drive but unless you love to test fate, why would you want to open that thing up? And knowing Vurbano's luck, it would blow up and burn his living room down and somehow that would be Directv's fault.

well if it burned up it would be kinda hard to tell it had been opened. SO after someone set D*'s drive on fire, burned it up and swapped it back inside, I dont think they would be able to tell anything unless they assign a forensic computer fire expert to your "case". I wonder what happens if your external drive blows up the machine???? :haha My problem with the current internal drive is that it is twice as loud as the 2 drives in my HR10.

All I can say is you are free to do it. Just dont come back one day if you do, the machine goes belly up, and Directv says you violated the warranty by opening it up. Not that I think that will happen very often as it is easy to just put the thing back. But its you, and you means the worst that can happen, will happen and it will somehow be Directv's fault. I do this stuff all the time in my line of business and my crazy hobby but my recommendation to folks is don't do it unless you really want to and understand the consequences.

If I plug an external drive into the machine and fry the HR20 what is D* going to say about that?

How did I know you would have this come back. If plugging in an eSATA data cable fries the machine, I will BUY you another one. You have to prove it though. Plugging a data cable in is much different then opening a case, removing power lines, removing a drive, plugging in an unsupported drive internally, and booting this off the INTERNAL power source. That is the danger, not the booting into a different data storage.
