DISH bill when up $5

$5 dollars does not seem much at face value. But for an xtra $60 a year, what are you really getting?

It's over a 5% increase! When you are living on a fixed income it is a lot and is much more than the negative inflation the CPI is showing!

The CPI may be showing a negative inflation, but the costs to television providers (Dish, DTV, etc) have clearly gone up. All of the TV providers have seen their costs go up, and I feel pretty certain all have had price increases due to that.

Chad, I think, has posted info about how much Dish makes on average per customer. If I remember right, it's around $5 per month per customer. When that is multiplied by 14 million customers, it sounds like obscene numbers ($800 million to a billion dollars, etc), but the margin per customer is important. Without raising prices about $5 per customer per month, Dish would go from profit to zero profit per year.

Dish has a lot of diversity in programming packages, with packages from the AT250 ($84.99) down to the Welcome Pack ($19.99). Customers can choose what package they want.

That isn't the correct use of the CPI. The CPI has nothing to do with costs to run a company.

"food and beverages, housing, apparel, transportation, medical care, recreation, education and communications, and other goods and services" is what is covered by the CPI, further,
  • The CPI represents changes in prices of all goods and services purchased for consumption by urban households. User fees (such as water and sewer service) and sales and excise taxes paid by the consumer are also included. Income taxes and investment items (like stocks, bonds, and life insurance) are not included.
  • The CPI-U includes expenditures by urban wage earners and clerical workers, professional, managerial, and technical workers, the self-employed, short-term workers, the unemployed, retirees and others not in the labor force. The CPI-W includes only expenditures by those in hourly wage earning or clerical jobs.
So for instance when programmers want ANY increase that DISH has to pay that isn't covered under the CPI. When DISH gives ANY raises to employees or adds to benefits that isn't covered in the CPI.
The fact that Groceries go up or down has no real bearing on what it costs companies to do business.

Seriously. Who cares who's raising rates more or when they do it. The only thing that matters is the final price. Who has the lowest price after all promotions and equipment fees? Dish is generally at the top of that list and that all that really matters. If you want the cheapest rates possible then switch providers every other year and quit your complaining. It's as simple as that.

Agreed!

Had been a loyal satellite junkie for years, but it just did not not seem cost effective anymore. Satellite, internet, and home phone has just gone up too much.

Never thought we would ever sub to cable tv, but looking to save some money, we decided to give the $89 bundle a try.

It is pretty amazing. Again, like with dish, we own all our own equipment. This helps keep the price in check- unlike with dish anymore. TWC has come a long way in recent years, and the HD is better than we experienced on the 722 or 211 (walking dead was obvious). A lot more channels than at120, too.

Schermann has it right. If you are not happy, look into alternatives. Sh*t or get off the pot. So far we have no regrets. We are saving almost $100/mo and have more channels, 2x internet speeds, and crystal clear home phone.

Never thought it would happen. Sad to leave dish, but it is what it is. We can always crawl back... Lol

I like this interpretation. You do not sound bitter at all about the loss, but excited for the new day. You saw and opportunity an you took it, and I am sure that in the future if you ever want to come back, Dish may be on your mind. No hostility one way or the other, and a all around great view on things.

Yes, dish would be at the top of the list!

That's just good business right there. I'm sure if someone asks too, you'll recommend Dish to them.

Yeah, if it has to be SAT.

Sure things changed, prices went up,and incentives disappeared. But all in all, dish was good to us. DIRT is a huge asset that kept us from leaving during the AMC dispute.

The parents are still on dish (we set them up), and are still ok with it. If this latest increase would have effected them, tough, they would have cut service too.

Other than the modem what equipment do you own? Tivo? And once the promo is over what willl be your monthly price?

yes, we purchased tivos to avoid the $25/mo box fee from them.

according to what we have been told, the price after promotion will be $20 more.

Mine went up by $5 on the 250+BB. After consulting the channel chart, I discovered that all but one of the channels we actually watch from 250 are also in BB. We can live without that one. Now I'm on 200+BB at $5 less than before. $10 less, if you count cancelling BB and taking the 6-month offer at half price.

Like the laws of physics. Every price increase will be met with an equal and opposite reduction in purchase.
