Sorry a lot of my posts here were "Debbie Downers". I am quite OCD, basically with an technician/engineers mindset, methodical and very logical (most of the time). I DO see a need for this service to a particular set of people. I DO hope they survive. I just wish they had come out 5 years ago.

So for those going to "self install" what is the most appropriate hardware for this (given the possibility for rain fade described earlier, etc.) I'm tempted to try it. Right now my inlaws use the Dish Welcome pack when travelling. This *might* be a better solution for them, sans locals.

If you aren't already familiar with FTA and don't already have a 75-90cm KU dish installed (motorized or fixed on 117w) ~~with a linear polarity standard LNBF with LO of 10750~~ (edited: use the proprietary ORBY TV LNBF), I wouldn't advise attempting a self install. The ORBY TV tech support team were prepared to deal with STB and diagnostics, but not assisting with an install or outside hardware question. They referred my hardware compatibility questions to MasTec (their 3rd party install partner). Understandably so, MasTec wasn't eager to provide tech support questions for a system that they were not contracted to install and sent me back to ORBY TV. Lesson learned...

No prior FTA experience or installed appropriate and suitable equipment? Go for the ORBY TV $150 install that includes a dish, proprietary LNBF, Diplexer, terrestrial antenna and labor. If your in-laws have the system installed at their home, they could pull the smaller 27x18" ORBY TV dish and take it with them on the road. The Dish Network LNBF is not compatible with this service.

By the way, IMO, that $150 install fee for an average person is a KILLER deal for all you get with it. As I said earlier, I can't figure how they are making any money on that, much less breaking even. That's barely enough money for an average 50 mile professional tech truck roll just out and back, much less also providing a dish, OTA antenna, coax, and install.

Add any wall-fishes, and now you are really getting into it...

You brought up a lot of good points. I think the package is great for a bare bones offering, especially at that price point. I think their biggest hurdle is the cash outlay, most people aren't willing to put out hundreds of dollars up front to save on a monthly bill. Even though the hardware and install is priced low, most people expect free.

The packages and hardware are a throwback to the mid 90's with Dish. I'm excited to watch how this plays out.

I'm almost tempted to get it installed so I can get a dish on the roof that will give me LOS to Ku sats west of 103. Currently my house blocks LOS to my ground mounted dishes.

Since it's prepaid service without a contract, it seems worth it for the experimental value

Are the Orby TP's on 117 high powered like Dish and Direct? Or is 117 just a high power sat in general? Are they DVB-S or DVB-S2?

I REALLY detest even the thought of a dish mounted on my roof, IF that includes penetration of the roofing with lag screws. Even with Pitch Pads or roofing tar, you can get leaks. If they don't hit the rafters, even worse when a 50mph wind hits. An Eve Mount would be much better, if you can't do a pole mount.

IF you go with a roof mount that is screwed down, do not ever remove the foot, even if you eventually remove the dish itself. If you remove the foot, do it properly, and make sure the holes are fully sealed.

Heads-up: For anyone considering using their own dish, purchase the LNBF from ORBY TV. The LNBF is proprietary and is necessary for updating the receiver. I was able to use a work around to enable a software update push and have been watching channels on a standard linear LNBF, but now am patiently waiting on the delivery of their LNBF in a few days. The cost for a LNBF is only $20, including shipping.

That's odd. What is it, something like a universal with dual frequencies that can have one as a back channel dedicated for firmware pushes?

I bought and installed an Orby today from Best Buy ($99.99). Used my motorized 1.2 meter dish. Standard LNBF (10750) through a switch works great! I plan on aiming a fixed 1.2 tomorrow. I will try a diplexer then as well. BTW - software updated fine with a standard LNBF.

Will this work with diseqe switches and 22khz? What is the sim card I have never heard of it before other than my smartphone. My mom is really interested in it to get animal planet she is very tired of what cozi tv has done and Leasea channels too.

A smart card is a sim card. It looks like the receivers are small format so they had to conserve real estate.
