Rear Projection TVs a thing of the past?

RPTVs will continue to offer the most bang for the buck in the 60" and larger category. Yes, the big plasmas usually have better PQ (in a very dark room), but at prices that absurd in the current economy. Good DLPs have always been the best RPTV choice for those who don't see rainbows, but the...

    720p vs 1080p

IMHO, HDTV calibration's value lies in the eyes of the beholder. Source material and room lighting are much bigger factors in the quality of your viewing experience. Yes, if you want to do one setting for watching DVD movies with exactly the same room lightiing from exactly the same viewing...

    Native Mode on HD Receiver

It depends on the DTV you are using. Most convert whatever HD resolution they receive to their native resolution w/o any fuss. A few are strictly 1080i only and won't accept a 720p signal. Other than that, this shouldn't be any big deal.

What do you guys think about this (HDTV transition):

I fear that most of those discounted LCDs on sale for Christmas, 1) don't have an ATSC tuner, and 2) suffer from the ghosting of fast moving images. Unbelievably, I saw an LCD hooked up to a D* HD receiver as a store display. PQ looked very good until the objects on the screen made a few quick...

    question on HDTV vs. EDTV

ED plasmas were a marketing scam. Everybody wanted to say they owned a flat panel TV, but few could afford the $8K to $10K the vendors were charging. Along comes a "relatively cheap" plasma TV. Most folks new to digital age didn't know HD from ED from SD. They see a DVD on the screen and it...

    digital optic splitter

There are manual selector switches available on line in the $15 - $25 range. Any kind of auto select won't work if both receivers are in use. Remote controlled switches will get you into the 3-digit dollar range.

    Pioneer heading for big loss

It is also surprising in that over in AVS Forum, the Pioneer DVDRs are constantly touted as being the best or among the best. Strange that such a highly praised product would be the key element in a major corporation's financial problems.

Sony makes style pitch to women for flat TV

Based on the commercial, it appears that the BRAVIA is being pitched to women as a style thing. It is physically attractive so it will blend w/ your decor and it is thin enough that it won't take up your valuable room space. Oh, BTW, your husband can watch HDTV on it if you turn on the power...

Sony makes style pitch to women for flat TV

My wife seldom recognizes the difference either. I constantly find her watching TNTHD or Leno w/ the partial-zoom on. However, every so often I get her to take notice of the vast difference between HD and SD for some content. For example, we started watching "Lost" in HD this season and...

    Gefen HDTV switch

I have the Dtronics DVI switch and it is a little touchy also. Doesn't hang like you describe, but doesn't always handshake when I switch from my HD receiver to my DVD player. Won't let me surf back and forth. I end up powering off the DVD player and restarting it, then the handshake occurs...

    New TV Setup

If I were you, I'd wait until I had all the equipment open in the room and the D* HDTV DVR hooked up. Most of those items come with some cables. Most of those cables are adequate to get you started. You can spend a lot of money on cables w/o gaining much, so proceed slowly w/ cable buying...

    DLP Televisions

To thread originator bpickell: Go to your local big-screen TV stores and view the products yourself. Walk sideways from the center of each screen and see where the PQ degrades (i.e., look for color loss first, not image contrast). I think you will find the above information to not be...

    Digital signal question

Component cables provide an analog signal. However, that does not preclude them from providing excellent HDTV. The DAC is in the STB outputing via component cables. Many people with DVI and HDMI cable connections still have an analog driven video display. In their case the DAC is in their...

    DLP Televisions

Don't worry about viewing angles w/ a DLP. They are second to only CRT direct view for wide viewing angles w/o color washout.

    Best Non-DBS OTA DTV STB?

Got my LG LST-4200A today. Nice unit with lots of features. Two major and one minor, initial observations. First, the PQ through DVI is far superior to that attainable with the Dish 811. Maybe an 811 w/ pre-P269 software would come close, but with the current software, the washed-out Dish...

    DLP Televisions

DLPs and LCD/rear projection TVs have an arc lamp for their light source. I don't know about the new JVC technology, but it probably does also. Plasma and LCD flat panels don't use an arc lamp, but then there isn't anything you can do for them over time as their PQ deteriorates (pixels die or...

    DLP Televisions

The lamp is the only User maintained part on the unit. My Sammy DLP is 25 months old and has about 7,800 hours on the lamp (wife used to run the TV to keep her company when she wasn't working) and the lamp still provides adequate output for viewing. I bought a replacement this month and will...

    hdmi switch

I guessing that it is a lack of any "economies of scale". That is, the market volume is so small that there isn't any mass production, so the labor and materials go at low volume (high) cost. Then the development and overhead costs are burdened over only the few items produced and the final...

    Best Non-DBS OTA DTV STB?

Rumor has it that the LG LST-4200A STB has become more scarce than cheap gasoline. None of the authorized brick-n-mortar stores in metro-Denver have any. On line, ValueElectronics appears to have sold out. Since they aren't making these gems anymore, tis a sad thing. ...and my wife just gave...
