I recieved my 805 Saturday by going to the local FedEx Home Delivery Hub and picking it up. Boy, I was glad the guy there offered to put it in my truck as it was very heavy. I had to carry it upstairs and it almost took me out.

Fortunately it has the same horizontal footplace as my Denon AVR-982. It is 2 inches longer front to back and about an inch higher so it fit into the space well. This baby does run hotter then the Denon so I keep one door open for air movement.

I purchased Phillips HDMI cables from Walmart, 2 3' cables and on 12' HDMI to DVI PXT cable (their highest product. Cost $120. I could have saved $45 dollars by going the cheapest route available (BJ's and Walmart) but that HDMI to DVI cable was not cheap anywhere.

Setup was easy once I figured out the remote which other then being big 2 7/8 x 9 3/8 square has backlight which is nice except for the number pad where the numbers light up but their secondary functions (selecting which imput device to use) is not. But since I only have the PS3 and the Dish DVR622 to hook up it is easy to remember who and where. I have a Denon 3910 DVD player to hook up but I have to find its HDMI cable I bought for it a while ago.

Once into the setup you select whether or not you monitor is hooked up with the HDMI output. On the 805 componet is automatically upconverted to HDMI and is passed thu. 480i is converted to 480p and that is it folks. If you want all your imputs to be upconverted to 720p or 1080i or 1080p then you will have to buy the 875 which will allow you to set the hdmi output for your monitor.

Side note: The manuel for the 805 is the same as the 875 -- the only differance between the two is the HQV upconversion chip and one HDMI input more (4) (the 805 has 3). My decision on the 805 was based on that I own a Pioneer Elite 630HD DVI set and it will be a few more years before the wife will let me upgrade. By that time I believe that most sets will upconvert to 1080p as well or better the the HQV chip in the 875. (Some companies like Phillips has already announced using the HQV chip for upconversion in their sets). The HDMI 1.3a input/output of the Onkyos will allow for 1080p 24fps bit for bit transfer to a 1080p capable monitor. It also will allow for the new extended color standard that the newer LCDs and Plasmas are beginning to support this year and the 100mhz LCDs just now hitting Europe (don't know if we will see those here in the US)

Once I hooked up the three HDMI cables (THREE! I removed 2 S-VHS cables, 4 componet cables, 3 optical cables and 6 analog cables from the Denon3910 for direct audio transfer for a total of 15 cables!) I then turned on the Onkyo.

Setting up the video was unbelivably easy. You just go into the setup, scroll down to input then select input (CAble/Sat) and select HDMI input. That is it the rest is automatic! No fuss no muss everything works!

Before I go into the speaker setup my speakers -- I have a Yamaha 5.1 speaker setup with a 250 watt Yamaha powered subwoofer and I replaced the two Yamaha bookcase rear speakers with two Polk Audio dual push surround speakers. I am going to reposistion those to the side of my setup and reinstall the bookcases for rear (7.1) support.

Now on to the speaker setup. Now here is where I oops. I did not read the manuel carefully as I did not set the ohms ratings for my speakers nor the cutoff for my power subwoofer before doing the Auddessey setup. You must do this before running the speaker setup. I will have to do this over again as soon as everyone gets up.

The Auddessey setup for those who have no experiance is very simple. You plug in a speaker (supplied with a long cord) and place it everywhere where someone can sit while watching. This receiver is capable of 8 settings and after you take all these settings it caluculates all the information and sets up the speakers accordingly. Even without setting the ohms and power subwoofer beforehand the setup was execellant.

Setup is now done. For those of you who wonder the 805 is capable of using multiple inputs (S-VHS, Componet Optical and Analog) for inputs for one product -- like the Denon 3910. And the unit will automatically detect those inputs and then supply you with the approriate menus. However if you only hook up the HDMI like I did those menus are the only ones you will see. I like that -- it is less confusing.

Observations:

Now I do not know if the DVI cable with the converter plug that I was using before had anything to do with the picture or if the Faroujda chip is doing anthing thing here for the HDMI output (I tend to believe that it was getting ride of another conector - the converter plug - and not the chip) but the picture on my Pioneer is definately brighter and sharper then before.

I played with the Pioneers Pure setting by turning it on and off. With it on you have selection over type Black , White and format setting (Std, Movie, Game, Sport etc). Once I set the Black and White I tried the Off setting and while I can have more adjustments other the pumping up the colour output and adjusting the tint I could see no real differance in Picture Quality.

Using DishNetwork the picture has never been so sharp. In addition I watched a recording of an SD show on FX and the first thing I noticed was it was not dark! Usually when I watch SD on Dishnetwork and the 622 the PQ is usually dark -- apparently the Onkyo and or the new HDMI/DVI cable is doing something here.

I saved the my evaluation of the sound reproduction for last. There is a reason -- my wife. She is not easily impressed and when I want to buy something or upgrade any of my electronics she is very skeptical. But since I make good money (and she makes better money) she usually allows me but more often then not to make my purchase. Only reason I got into the HDTV as an early adopter was because I was hit by a service truck at a red light and the settlement allowed me to buy an HDTV. She actually barter another cat out of that deal. She got the cat and I got the HDTV.

Well, I have been waiting for a new reciever to play all the new Audio codecs and have HDMI 1.3 and the ONKYOs showed up. I was trying to decide between the 805 and the 875 (my decision and reasons stated above) and how to talk my wife into allowing me to drop a few dollars on a new toy. Well, my birthday is in July, Circuit City had the 805 and a decent sale - $150 off and three months same as cash. I pitched it as my present and she bit -- but not until she gave me grief over selling her digital camera without her permision (I purchased a Sony 7.2 Cybershot that does HD pictures selling her Canon SureShot 2.1). After making me sweat for about 15 minutes she smiled and said go ahead.

Now when the CD came out she busted my chops for 3 years before I was able to get on and after I set it up and played it for her she said she should of allowed me to do it sooner. I knew she was going to do the same with this reciever as during the discussion she stated that I had not had the Denon AVR that long and she could not see why I wanted the Onkyo but she relented.

I had the new setup on Voom's Equator when she walked in and she set down and started watching (it was playing 'Over California') I switched it to HDNET which was playing 'Top Gun'. She likes that movie and she started smiling. I asked if she could tell the differance in the new receiver and she said yes and then she said noticably. My wife is not an expert but if she says there is a marked differance then there is.

The sound reproduction by the Onkyo smacks my old Denon right out the door. Sounds are crisp and the sound field is excellent. I guess I will not have to use my sound meter anymore. At first I thought that there was no bass but then I noticed that when needed the bass was not only there but so were ambient sounds that I had not even noticed -- we are still on HDNET and TopGun here!

I put in The Queen on BluRay for my wife and once again I was amazed at the sound reproduction. Of course now I was listening to the uncompressed PCM soundtrack and it is very impressive. This is not an action film but little things like the differant sounds of tires on roads, shoes on floors or differant textures (rocks, asphalt, ect) were very vibrant and really made the sound come alive. I moved around my setting area and was amazed how well the Onkyo handled the setup. I have never heard my speakers this clearly or as well defined on the Denon.

All in all, this is a great receiver. It does so many things with the sound like the THX Ultra 2 and other THX settings that it will take some time to experiance all the differant settings. It is very easy to setup and I am amazed by how well the Audessey setup worked. It has been reported that some have experienced pops occasionally with the HDMI setup but I have not experiance it once. As a matter of fact, I have noted in the past sometimes delay in lypsync using the Dish 622DVR. After watching last night for about 4 hours and many differant channels I did not notice the problem once. The Onkyo TX-SR805 performs above my expectations and is very easy to use and if you are leaning towards one I feel you would be very pleased with this receiver.

One thing about getting the 805 is that the $700 I saved between the 805 and 875 I can stowe away towards a new HDTV -- maybe next year. :D

For those of you's who own a DirecTV HR2x boxes: When I was having trouble with my HR20-100, I connected back up my coax digital connection and disconnected my HDMI, in order to trouble shoot the problem. What I discovered was that the digital coax output delivered quite an improvement in sound quality over a straight HDMI connection. The HDMI coneection delivered better video, so I left that connected and added a the digital coax connection and now I have the best of both worlds. Give this a try, you may be as surprised as I was, in the difference in sound quality. I'll chalk this up to better D/A converters in the Onlyo 805. Let me know if this works for any of you.

I had my HR20 connected via optical to my 605 and wasnt very happy, I now have it back to sending HDMI audio to the 605. Are you saying you got better SQ from audio of the digi coax and left video on the hdmi?
Paul Wozniak
Yes sir I am. The sound from my Left and Right speakers is way clearer to me than it was through the HDMI connection. Remember now that this is through the coax connection, not the toslink, (although on my receiver, I have connected the toslink to just to see if it was different, and I can't say I heard any. This may differ for you, however.) Just remember to go into your set-up menu on the ONKYO and change the digital output in the audio set-up menu, otherwise your ONKYO may just recognize the HDMI only.
gadgtfreek
Thanks, will give it a try.

Let me know what you hear, for me it was quite a difference.

Onkyo seems to use ecost.com for a lot of their refurb stuff.

I noticed today they have the 806 in silver for $449
eCOST.com - Online Discount Superstore home electronics, computers, laptops, mp3 players

Seems like a good price for the THX box.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

Agents need appropriate context to make what would be understood as the correct read in a situation like that, and that Gemini answer was a clear miss on that front.

That said, we've also seen Musk (and/or his team) put his thumb on the scale (or just release a very poor product) with his own deployed AI since:

In the end, it's all a tool. Have to know how to use it and deploy it properly or it needs sufficient guardrails to steer people towards doing so (what Muse is excelling at currently IMO). I'm routinely interacting with several agents a day operating various processes locally and in services I use, and there are numerous others silently spun up to perform actions or satisfy requests from my prompts.

Related to earlier discussion in the thread on leveraging local inference: this kind of analysis happening behind the scenes is something everyone will have built into Windows, IMO. Most people won't see all of this, just the results, unless they want to dig into how the fix was chosen. Stuff like this will be standard as agents get local system access baked in, and more of the inference itself moves on-device.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Yes, many have hacked a DirecTV or Dish Network dish before. Quite undersized, but would receive the 97w KU stations with an LNBF swap. Make a template to set the LNBF face angle and distance from the reflector. Remove the current circular polarity LNBFs and make a bracket to hold the replacement linear LNBF in the correct centered position. Remember to set the polarity skew.

would probably also work well for NHK on 101W and possibly for PBS on 99W. I used one for a while on 30W. Just keep in mind that because it's undersized for those satellites, it might work fine in clear weather but won't have much margin to account for signal degradation during rain/snow

If you can find one, the Shaw / Star Choice 75e ellipticals are great for use on 97, 99, and 101W. They are really just rebranded ChannelMaster 75 cm reflectors and use linear LNBFs by default out of the box.

Everyone else's mileage may vary.

I have read that some have converted this type dish but after giving it a good look, it's the lnb conversion that is the bottleneck. Does anyone have a picture of their attempt to configure the lnb? I watched a video on youtube from the save it for parts guy and he used duct tape! Guess it worked but I'm thinking something a bit more permanent!
Thanks to all for your interest and replies...

Many of us have used a universal LNBF mount (or get creative with L brackets and plumbers tape - perforated metal strapping). Use a few inches of aluminum tube (or a piece of 1x2" lumber) to extend the support arm (replacing the plastic mount used by DirecTV and Dish) to place the LNBF throat opening at the correct distance from the reflector, the correct height and at the correct angle. Nothing magical... simply place the new linear LNBF in the center at the same distance, height and angle as the current combo.

On the West Coast, a 40-cent differential is common. It used to be 30 cents before the prices rose above $3.

A "full dollar more" sounds like it may be boat gas (non-alcoholic), which is a whole different discussion.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

JohnGalt1234 - So you basically have 2 Hopper 3's. The CasinoH3 is the one that is Hopper 3 only while Master Bedroom is a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup.
Master Bedroom uses Android TV (ATV) software so the DISH part is actually a app and will behave differently as you can probably tell the Guide's are different on the Master Bedroom which will resemble the same guide used on other ATV devices such as the Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4. If I am correct, the CasinoH3 is the one with the problem since you did say the one dated 09/05/2026 is the naughty one while 08/15/2026 named Master Bedroom is the nice one. Usually I would expect the CasinoH3 to be the one without the problem because it's Hopper 3 only and Master Bedroom would be the one with problems because it has the Hopper Plus involved. That is why they behave differently because CasinoH3 is running the native Hopper 3 software while Master Bedroom is running the Android TV software and also it runs a app called DISH known as package com.dish.atv.launcher, the version for mines is P15403 2026100917 so it's probably the same version as the Hopper Plus software version with the date of October 9, 2026, not sure what the 17 means except maybe revision 17?

This explains it better than I can. Sorry, had to take all the ads out.

It is not just a display signal as explained above. When you have the Hopper+ connected, it uses Android TV for pretty much everything except for the satellite signal which is why it uses the DISH app for the standard Hopper 3 functions. But that should not matter because in your case, CasinoH3 is the Hopper 3 with the EHD which is what you call the naughty one based on the dates you mentioned and Master Bedroom which has the Hopper Plus connected to the Hopper 3 that does not have the problem. So one way to test the theory is disconnect the Hopper Plus from that Hopper 3 and then use the EHD's connected to CasinoH3 currently to see if the same issue exists. That way you will know if the problem is there without a Hopper Plus connected or if CasinoH3 is just a bad hopper to begin with.

Normally when you disconnect the Hopper Plus, it will be 30 minutes or more before you can use the Hopper 3 again.

What you want to do is:
hold the POWER button in, not the red reset button, for about 45 seconds or so while disconnecting the power to the Plus and moving the HDMI cable and it will reboot to the normal Hopper only immediately.

One comes online; the other consistently won't. Also, when I connect the EHD, the USB Detected status light on the EHD itself changes from Red to Green. But the Hopper (713) does not start the EHD read process. The light changes to indicate that the EHD has detected a valid USB cable, but the Hopper does not recognize it.

This has been an ongoing issue. A fix is coming, probably in the next software version.
