This poll is one I run each year in some form or another when the NFL season begins.

It is in two parts and you can select two answers appropriately. This has nothing to do about blackouts for NFL games on your local station, only NFLST.

I recognize that the contract negotiations are over for the current term, but the second part on how you were represented the last time in this request (NOT) and how it should be handled in the future by DirecTV programming executives is the purpose of the poll.
How do you feel about NFLST blackouts

Correct, the local affiliates in your area prefer that you watch via their signal so you are forced to see the local ads. They claim that if you do not see those local ads you will not shop locally with those merchants! BS!

If I watch a ST delivered game from 800 miles away, I doubt I will drive to a San Fran car dealer to buy a car, furniture or whatever, as opposed to buying them say within 20 - 30 mins away from my home. These guys insult our common sense and it is a JOKE they have gotten away with this BS for so long.

charper1-

Do you know this is a fact? That the FCC requires they charge or do not charge for NFLST when they black out a game.
My knowledge of this was the blackout was a contractural issue developed USING DMAs as a guideline between the networks, their affiliates and in this case DirecTV as well, If this is so, then YES D* would be able to negotiate a contract that permitted them to 1. offer a refund for the game they blacked out and better 2. exempt them from blackout on the basis that it is a paid to watch game. If it is as you suspect, the blackout rule for DirecTV or any dbs service would be published in the CFR's and I should do some homework on that.

I really do see this as an issue where DirecTV is charging for a service and then not delivering it and offering no refund. I do not see it an obligation for DirecTV to lobby the FCC IF this is a regulation they have to charge and offer no refunds for blackout. If you bought a PPV movie and paid for it, then it was determined that your community had some regulation that forbid you to watch it ( as does some communities on adult programming)and they blacked it out, I'm certain you'd be on the phone requesting a refund EVEN IF in the tiny tiny print it said this movie may be blacked out in your community due to adult movie standards regulations.

Again, my goal is that I would like to see everyone who bought tickets to watch the games see it/ them, and second, if you were not permitted to see the game you bought tickets to at least D* would give you a refund for that. And third, I feel, since this is a contract between D* and the NFL to air the games in a closed Paid viewing, that DirecTV should negotiate to make blackouts exempt from the NFLST in the next contract.

So far the only valid argument I have seen to keep blackouts in place for NFLST was from Mr Kennedy, who claimed he was an owner. I suspect he means team owner, or at least someone who has a huge vested interest in the profitability of a team's stadium sales. From his perspective, the more money he can make the better it is for him. I can respect that, but don't have to accept that without a negotiation for a better deal for the fans on DirecTV.

Here's my "homework:

This is the original proposal for rule change

It was later passed and is described here:
The Sports Blackout Rule protects a sports team's or league's exclusive distribution rights to a local sporting event. The sports blackout rule applies only if a local TV broadcast station is not carrying the local sporting event. If a local TV broadcast station does not have permission to carry the local game, then no other broadcaster's signal displaying the game can be shown in the protected local blackout zone. The rule applies to a satellite carrier's retransmission of nationally distributed superstations and network stations. Id.

The new rules apply to both C-Band (large dish) and DBS (small dish) satellite service providers.

Understand the key point here is the NFL has control and the NFL is the one who triggers the permission or no permission. This is why the rule is applied differently in each community (that is another debate) But the FCC did rule in this decade that when the NFL forbids a local FREE TV station from carriage, that no other station or DBS or C Band service may carry it either.
I don't know how this allows certain sports bars to carry the game unless the sports bar had some closed circuit service or they were using a hacked D* card.

So, in conclusion to Charper1's point, this regulation would prevent D* from the negotiation with the NFL but there was nothing found so far that makes the revenue charged by D* for NFLST games blacked out a non-refundable charge.

At this point the FCC rule discovered would make the poll moot. ( I admit when I am wrong) However, not included in this poll is the question about DirecTV refunds for games they are required to black out. In effect, this leaves the NFL out of it as far as the way NFLST is sold, re blackouts. There would be no purpose in negotiation

Since the poll serves no purpose, I suggest it be closed.
S
Yes, I've never figured that out. I'm a Steelers fan. The two years that I had ST I would not get a game of theirs and then would find out it would be on at one of the bars down the road also using D*. What the heck is up with that?
L

I'm sorry but its a little deeper than that. Fox pays the nfl for the game, your local station pays fox for the game, adver pay your station preminum prices for air time during the game because it is the only channel the game can be view on. Why would the local station give up thier exclusive rights to broadcast a game they paid for?

My OTA is not working anymore. This started after the latest update. I have the OTA dongle with a OTA antenna that I've been using for years. My hopper does not recognize the dongle anymore and when I go to the OTA setting, it has a screen that says to plug a dongle into the USB. I tried unplugging and plugging back, in the same usb port and other ports. The Hopper does not recognize it. Anyone have same issue?

No updates but if you can get DISH Technical Operations to roll you back to H710 or earlier even though H708 would be best because it also eliminates another problem like in this comment, you will also no longer have the problem as long as you don't update manually or forced to any new version until the problem is fixed as the problem started in H711 and still exist in H712 and H713.

Installed an off-air antenna a couple days ago for a customer who had just cancelled his Dish service. He had a dual off-air adapter and gave it to me. Cool. I'll keep it on the truck....might come in handy. Got to admit I don't watch anything as far as live tv goes anymore. Even if we have severe weather, our local channels will have a live feed on Youtube.

In other news, it was announced that the software fix for the two tin cans and a string will not be forthcoming. A hardware fix is required. However, that fix will let you receive stations from a gazillion miles away.

Truck roll charges may apply. Two year commitment required.

Now that I'm retired, obviously I have different health care insurance. I take 2 prescriptions. With my old insurance I didn't have to pay for either of them, now I do. It's not a huge amount but it led me to dig a little into the cost of prescription medications. I have been using Walgreens for the longest time. But what I found was that Walgreens price is 4.8 times more for one of my prescriptions and the other is 2.3 percent more compared to the lowest price pharmacy. If you pay for prescription medications you might want to have a look at trumprx and see if you can get a lower price.

I run them through several different providers to see who has the lowest cost

Usually it's Walmart or Sam's + GoodRx

Also...

You can also price them through the CareCard and WellRx apps.

Sometimes Amazon Pharmacy is cheapest.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

Even a physical disc purchase is considered a license, just extremely harder to pull access vs digital.

But once new players are no longer sold and older players quit working, that takes care of the access to your library.

See LaserDiscs for one example of that happening.

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.

What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.
