Just had dish installed last week. I had done some research on grounding, and was expecting the ground block be placed outside near the feed through point, but installer suggested putting it inside, to avoid moisture problems. That sounded logical to me, so we mounted it on the basement ceiling (1st floor joist), within a couple feet of wall feed through. Location is about perfect, as the copper water line comes through the basement wall directly below that point, clamped ground to that, so only about 7' of ground wire.

Just wanted to get a second (or more) opinion on mounting the ground block to a wood joist inside the house. Any issues, safety or otherwise, to be concerned with?

His work was very neatly done (which I made sure of), so my impression anyway was that he knew right from wrong.

Let's just put it this way: If a catastrophic amount of current made its way on to your cables, would you want that current entering your home before it crosses to the ground connection?

Imagine a home with overhead power lines and a tree limb fell on the power line to the home, causing the power lines to hit the dish on the way down. For a brief moment, all the power the power company makes available to its customers through their transformer suddenly energizes your coax.

The coax is probably going to get vaporized as well as the #10 ground wire. The ground block may well get flash melted, throwing hot metal slag everywhere. The lower resistance of a ground path means the bulk of the current will flow that way. Personally, I would rather that path be outside the home.

They put it inside quite often here. Not just the satellite companies though - the cable and telephone companies do too.

I have no problem having it inside as long as it's near the point of entrance.

wow!! I see your point. But in the event of such an unsual and catostrphic series of events, would it not be a disaster anyway?...BTW I NEVER Install a dish near powerlines. EVER...For the same reasons tyou exlained in your scenario above..That and if lightining strikes the pole carrying the elect. service to the home could "jump" from the elect. service line to a nearby dish.. SO that's a no no. If that means putting the dish in a less conveient area of the roof, so be it..

Prior to the mid 80's all telco ground blocks were typically inside the basement of homes built on basements. The house I grew up in was built in the 60's..Our telco ground block was in the basement..It was in the late 80's when the telcos started putting interface boxes on the exterior of the home but still ran the ground wire to a cold water copper pipe if the home was so plumbed.

The power company has a lot of available power coming from that transformer. The weak point in such a contact would obviously be the coax cable. I've been informed by electrical engineers that in the few milliseconds it takes for the aluminum shield to rise to its melting point, up to 400 amps of power could run a distance of 50 feet down the coax in the time before the connection is severed by the aluminum shield being vaporized. Most of that current is going to be dissipated along the ground path, i.e., from the coax to the ground block to the ground wire and ground electrode. So, for the most part, the part of the system that will get destroyed is the ground block and everything on the dish side. Personally, I would want to keep that event outside.

Lesser currents such as those restricted by a breaker that don't vaporize the coax can make it so hot as to make combustion of nearby flammable objects a great possibility. I've been in a few basements where the ground block and/or the coax leading to it from the dish passed by shear fabric curtains, towels on shelfs above dryers, etc.

If you get a direct strike, the ground is not big enough to protect the house or equipment.

Ground is to bleed off potential which helps reduce the probability of a strike.

The ground is NOT protection, it is prevention.

Once thet current passes the shield it is everywhere in your house it doesn't stop at 50 feet. Even if interrupted it still has momentum and pressure within it.

I'd put it outside if at all possible, I've seen high power electrical from 220 to lightning damage after its went through the coax and the ground block and ground wire or what was left of them and it would be much better to have it outside instead of in a house.

I'm just repeating what some electrical engineers have determined. It takes much less than a second for a power company transformer load imposed on the shield of coax to melt the aluminum and thus open the circuit. Most of the current that gets through can be handled via the ground circuit for the short duration that it takes to vaporize the coax upstream of the ground block. The damage downstream of it will be less significant.

When I had my Ford Escape, I counted on getting lower MPG due to a number of factors, mostly the increased rolling resistance caused by snow on the road, lower tire pressures due to lower air temperatures, higher drag due to increased air density and frozen precipitation on the car's body, and increased electrical power required by lighting and accessories like wipers. Since ICE are not as efficient as an EV, the energy they normally waste means these impacts are not as significant as when you drive an EV.

The Volvo PHEV I drive now will drop to its EPA range in the Winter (35 Miles Electric range) while I am seeing 50 miles of EV range in the summertime. I don't have a heat pump, but a resistive heater which uses a Watt of electricity to produce one watt of heat energy. It's better to heat the seats and steering wheel (still resistive, but targeting the contact points with less power). ICE is so bad at converting gasoline into forward motion that all that heat can be used to heat up the cabin. That's great when it's cold, but wasted when it's hot out.

Same thing with braking, ICE just heats up the air by rubbing friction material against steel disks (or drums). EV captures the kinetic energy and puts most of it back into the battery.

Wait a minute ....
I dis agree with your 1st paragraph. In a Gas vehicle running the Wipers is Not making less Miles Per Gallon (or per Volt in your case) running things on electric isn't effecting the MPG

However, are you trying to say that the EV doesn't rub its disc together to stop ?
Yes it does, your comparing 2 different things, yes the EV kinetic energy, but that kinetic energy is doing what, its making the brakes work.

Both vehicles stop using Brake system, but when you break it down, its still using pads and Drum or rotors to Stop.

Actually, EVs stop the majority of the time using regenerative braking via the electric motors. You can also use the friction brakes, but id say 80-90% of the time I do not, and most EV drivers would be the same.

This is one reason your regular brakes last so much longer on an EV.

Not Knowing your brakes are going to function.
With an Ice Car I Know when I use the brakes, they work .... you sound like they don't use them.

Then again when I had my 4 speed, i'd often times use the engine to slow as well, but never intentionally not use the brake.

Curious, do the EV's and Teslas have a Manual option when you buy them ?

I would not really equate it to engine braking like you are accustomed to.

Honestly, from the passenger seat you cant tell the driver isnt using the brake pedal.

For the driver it is a much smoother experience.

GM has problems with their EV's I hope since they are not announcing new models that they are working on making their EV's more solid and figure out the bugs many people (myself included) have had with their EV's.

Well, thats pretty damn scary ...

Why? You have two methods to slow the vehicle down instead of relying solely on the brakes.

I have never been able to drive an EV, so at this point ... I'm just not sure how it all works ...

I take that back, I did drive an EV once for about 30 minutes, it was a Ford Maverick I believe.

The big thing talked about is that if there is a combination, there would 4 companies releasing 85% of the movies. (I assume that is Paramount, Disney, Sony, and Universal) That wouldn't have changed since this was announced back in February, the shareholders voted in April, and the DOJ approved it last month. It seems like there was a lot of time to slow this down instead of a couple of weeks before the deal closes.

They only moved to sue once it was clear the feds weren't going to stop it and the DOJ finished it's work. The same process that was followed for Nexstar / Tegna, which was successfully held up pending trial.

This is probably a harder case to prove than one of local market overlap.

Paramount will have to pay Warner Bothers/ Discovery $650 million "ticking fee"for every quarter, or $7 million per day, if they go past the original merger assured date they put in their contract, which is in September 30th.

Paramount is also on the hook for $7 billion reverse termination fee paid to Warner Brothers/Discovery if the merger doesn't go through period. This could make the merger not worth their money or especially their time. Especially since I heard that Warner Brothers /Discovery is losing billions each month. They have till June 4, 2027 to fight out the deal with regulators and lawyers before the deal completely expires.

So the longer they stretch this out in Court the better for killing the merger. The A.G.s of 12 blue states are using the 1913 bill passed and signed in to law in 1914 - Clayton Antitrust Act - to stop the merger. I would love to see someone in D.C. not get what he wants in the merger in the first place, which was the destruction of CNN and the firing of the anchors he personally doesn't like. :biggrin

Not I. I started streaming for better control of what programming I chose to pay for and because of the $40-50 in extra fees on my bill that I haven't had to pay for more than 10 years now.

If you have been in the hobby as long as I have, you may remember watching Nostalgia TV on C-Band. Our local station started carrying YTA which is Your Television America and is distributed on SES11 at 105W. I don't find too much of interest on it but my research came up with their website: YTA Television Network | Your Television America and it states: "Founded in 1985 as the Nostalgia channel, YTA (Your Television America) has a long history providing classic americana programming to audiences across the country." YTA is not the same as the old Nostalgia but I thought I'd stir up a few memories.

Also, at the bottom of the page is galxy.tv link which states it pays you to watch their channel.

I remember the original C band channel of that name. It wasn't the same as the over the air channel of the same name today. I received that locally until earlier this year and it aired mainly movies. Perhaps I'm wrong but I thought that became American Life TV, but it's been a long time.

Seems like they were the forerunners of airing older classic programming that began around the time of Nick at Night or TV land. The days before the original RTN, RTV channels from Equity TV and later from Luken that I loved watching. Thanks for sharing.

In a dual Hopper 3 installation, does Signal Protector failover remain limited to three receivers across the account, or does each Hopper independently provide Signal Protector to its own Joey clients?

Heavily edited and redacted answer.

IMHO since the joey clients are not receivers, just clients, the Hopper does all the work and just sends a signal to each Joey.
However, each signal to a Joey occupies a tuner on the Hopper and AFAIK the Hopper can negotiate three ethernet streams at a time.
With dual Hopper installation that number should apply to each Hopper, so you might be able to have 6 signal protection instances in that case.
My best guess.
