A couple of years ago I was at a crossroads in the quest for what to do about High Definition and 4:2:2 satellite content. At the time we in North America seemed stuck on using DVB-S as the modulation of choice, while DVB-S2 was being used in Europe for most all of their HD content. Several years before I had been testing software for a company that wanted to produce a workable PCI card solution for HD and SD in both 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 colorspace. The company decided to leave the satellite scene so I started playing with MyTheatre as well as Rod Hewitt's TSReader program. In the summer of 2006 I decided that I needed something permanent in the HD and 4:2:2 departments. I was torn between getting a QualiTV receiver, which at that time would work on SD and HD in both colorspace modes, or building a Home Theater PC. I wasn't really interested in any of the just released Korean HD receivers hitting the market because they were stuck in doing 4:2:0 only. The Quali was a proven performer although it had several caveats that needed to be dealt with, and of course computer PCI cards have their very own set of learning curve difficulties. It was the sheer versatility that prompted me to build a new Home Theater PC with its sole purpose being a satellite receiver. It was constructed specifically with good horsepower for HD and 4:2:2 content, and my old but trusted BEC DST-1000 PCI card was relegated to standby use and a new Twinhan 102G was installed. Its performance was outstanding. I added some newer codecs such as BitControl and Dscaler which are great 4:2:2 performers, as well as the more common ones like Elecard, Sonic Cinemaster, FFDShow, CyberLink, InterVideo, and a few others. When dealing with a PCI card, getting the codecs working properly and adjusted for correct deinterlacing is the maker or breaker of the whole system…it is the single most important aspect of a successful HTPC.

Over the next year or so the system was upgraded once with some more horsepower…not that it needed it but the opportunity arose, and it's better to have too much power than not enough. During mid to late 2007 there seemed to be a distinct move by some programmers to deploy the DVB-S2 modulation scheme in order to cram more bits in less space. So it became time to put some thought into an S2 solution, and I was right back at square one so to speak. Some of the newer STB's were working with S2 with good results, even with h.264 compression. There were a couple of PCI cards that were coming to the forefront…the TechnoTrend S2-3200 and one from DVBWorld. The USB adapters from both of these companies were getting some reviews, but there was a bandwidth limitation problem with the TechnoTrend USB model that I thought could possibly be a hinderance for any USB model, so I wanted to stay clear of the dongles. Some reports were about the TT S2-3200 being a bit deaf, which did concern me as I am a bit undersized on C band. And since I used Rod Hewitt's TSReader program a lot I knew there was no support for the cheaper DVBWorld card. In early March of 2008 I went ahead and pre-purchased an S2-3200 from CyberEstore…the only supplier of the S2-3200 in North America…and they were out of stock. They were running a pre-order special, and it was cheaper than ordering from DVBShop in Germany. CyberEstore posted regular status updates on their website, and I received the card in about 4 weeks.

Installation was bland and uneventful, as I did my homework beforehand. I knew I would have to use the ancient WDM data driver for use with TSReader, and the computer was already set up with my arsenal of codecs, so it just picked up right where it left off from my trusty Twinhan 102G. I found several of the reported S2 signals, but there were also 3 in particular on Galaxy 14 that I could not lock. I attributed this to my lacking of dish size…but I'll say more about that later. When racing season began there were some S2 feeds being reported, so of course I had to check those out. Although I could lock about 80% of the found feeds with my 8 footer, I found there were several that I could lock that other people with 10 footers were having trouble with, and there were a few that were marginal with me that others could lock fine. These were S2-8psk so it stands to reason you need as big a dish as is practical for your location, and it needs to be well tuned. My dish is an 8 foot Channel Master fiberglass using a Chaparral Bullseye II feed. The LNB's are a pair of California Amplifier Extended Professional II's 30 degree with 500 khz stability for C band, and a pair of Japan Radio NJR2535S PLL's rated at a .7db noise figure with 25 khz stability for KU band. Four separate RG11 coaxes come 270 feet down the hill to a 4x4 DTV multiswitch and power inserters for the vertical LNB's to insure full operating power.

Over this summer I have been very satisfied with the performance of the S2-3200 primarily using the TSReader/VLC combo. I'm not much of a baseball fan so the summer months is the time of least use of the HTPC…my heavy use time is during the fall/winter/spring college sports season. I do enjoy racing so it does see "some" summertime use. The reports started coming in about a particular network transitioning to DVB-S2. I was set to go for that modulation change but the biggest challenge was they were also going to use h.264 compression. I had messed around with the Tennis Channel HD feed that was in h.264 and I had found that the current release of VLC wouldn't work with h.264 at all…it just crashed. Since VLC is open source there are many people working on the program at once, and their work can be found in the "VLC Nightly Builds" section of their website. I had been checking a few of these later versions and while they did show improvement it was obvious they were still not ready for prime time. I had been using MyTheatre mainly for recording purposes, but it sees the S2-3200 as a WinTV Nova card so no go for S2 signals. Saar had been promising S2 and h.264 compatibility for a long time, but progress was slow. Using VLC didn't allow the choice of DirectShow codecs as MyTheatre does, so you're stuck with whatever codec is built in the program. There were some software versions being reported as working very well with S2-h.264 feeds, but the problem there was they only worked with the newer BDA drivers. I was at a crossroads yet again…do I continue to hang on to TSReader and use the WDM drivers, forsaking any h.264, or do I install the BDA drivers and move on to greener pastures with different software? I knew I would miss TSReaders ability to look at the tables and garner PID info, but I made the decision to move on and try some new things. I installed the newest BDA drivers for the S2-3200 from TechnoTrends site and had a look at DVBDream. I managed to get it working…sort of. It had a tough time locking S2 signals and didn't seem to have any provision to directly tell the software that the signal being tuned was S2. It was a hit or miss situation, similar to my investigation of the new version 4 beta of MyTheatre. I remember playing with the trial version of the Transedit program associated with DVBViewer, and still had it installed in the computer. Serious playing with this program unearthed absolute support for DVB-S2, and after doing a scan on an S2-h.264 MUX I set the codecs to their proper settings and was blessed with a glorious preview of an S2 h.264 HD picture. I was viewing the output on an LG 42" 1080p LCD and the compression artifacts were extremely minimal. After looking at the price of the DVBViewer Pro version I felt it was well worth the 19 bux if it produced the results I had seen with the transponder editor. I ponied up the cash and within an hour I had a serial number.

The Transedit program works in conjunction with the main program, and I was ecstatic to find out that it has an analyzer program built in. It looks like I'm not going to miss TSReader as much as I thought, and although TSR has other features that the Transedit program doesn't have, I probably won't use them. The DVBViewer program has some minimal quirks, but so does every other program I have tried. The software works very well with the S2-3200 and tunes/scans signals extremely quick. With TSReader I would wait sometimes up to a minute for it to get back to a useable state if the tuner was unable to lock an S2 signal. With the Transedit program you will know if you get a lock in just a few seconds.

I don't want to get into a review of DVBViewer, but I think it's important that one sees what to expect and what can be accomplished using this software with the TT S2-3200, so I will conclude with this. Since DVBViewer uses the BDA drivers I thought I would go back and take a look at those S2 signals that I couldn't lock using TSReader with WDM drivers. I revisited the 3 MUXES on Galaxy 14 that wouldn't lock at all, and using BDA drivers with DVBViewers Transedit program I locked 2 of those 3 signals, and they showed no errors.

The bottom line….

How well your DVB card works is dependent on how well you computer is set up with the proper codecs and how much horsepower you have under the hood. A PCI card (or USB dongle) is just a tuner…no more, no less. Its job is to lock the desired signal and pass the transport stream to the computer, and the computer's job is to deal with whatever signal it's given.

The Technotrend S2-3200 in my opinion works as well as anything out there when using the BDA drivers. After using both sets of drivers I can see a marked difference in tuner sensitivity.

It's better to have a well tuned system when dealing with S2 signals no matter what receiver you use.

There will always be something better on the horizon when dealing with consumer electronics, and this will probably never change. I've played the waiting game before, and it never really pays off. The TechnoTrend S2-3200 is a good performer, and if the computer and dish system is set up to be ready for DVB-S2 signals, it won't disappoint.

Thanks for taking the time for the review, AC. It has been very informative.

Thanks for the review! It's worth noting that there are at least two revisions each of the S2-3200 and S2-3600. If you look at the STB0899 demodulator chip, the old ones will have a revision code of "C1L", which is known to have problems including not locking to transponders every time. If it says "C2L" then you have the new one, which is supposed to have fixed these problems.

There's one additional point worth noting that I didn't glean from your review... TSReader can stream to media player classic (mpc), you are not tied at the hip to VLC. TSReader lacks the ability to control mpc the way it can control VLC, but it does work and it's actually my usual configuration.

The reason I didn't mention it is I've already been there, and the results were less than stellar. Using CoreAVC with MPC the video had a slight amount of studdering, and then there was the well documented issue with MPC freezing after an extended play time...with me it was usually around 30 minutes...sometimes more, sometimes less. With DVBViewer and CoreAVC the video is beautiful and it will play for as long as it's told to.

the well documented issue with MPC freezing after an extended play time...with me it was usually around 30 minutes...sometimes more, sometimes less.

When this happens you'll usually find you lose about 2gb of space on your hard drive that the temporary internet folder is on. You'll find that what happens when you http stream to any directshow player, like MPC, apparently directshow handles it by creating a temporary file in that directory to cache the stream. Two bad things happen as a result of this. The first is obviously that it uses hard drive space and the amount used continues to increase as the file continues to grow all the while your streaming. You don't have to worry though as it will never exceed 2 gb, which brings us to the other bad point. The other bad point is when MS wrote the code to do this they must have somehow used a 32bit pointer to indicate the offset into the file and thus whenever you reach the 2gb point bad things happen. Note that this happens regardless of the file system used on the drive. That is even if your using NTFS, which supports larger files, it still happens, hence my assumption that it must be a pointer issue. So basically what happens is whenever you've streamed 2gb worth of data the player hangs or crashes and leaves behind that 2gb temporary file eating up your hard drive space. When you start over again it creates a new different hidden temporary file in this directory and repeats the process all over again. Obviously the amount of time it takes for this to happen will depend on the bitrate of the video as this will determine how much time it takes to reach 2gb.

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

That would pinpoint it to the H3 that is the problem. Are both H3's on the same software version now and before? Did the system check actually do the full EHD test like the one below?

They are both currently listed at V. H711 bootstrap V 1117 but the dates (are those install dates or V dates?) Are 9/5/2026 on naughty H3 and 8/15/2026 on nice one.

Not sure but it's supposed to do it periodically even though some people have been complaining on reddit for a few months that it's doing it on every nightly reboot and it's causing them to not sleep.

The current version is H713 but many people had been having issues with versions H711, H712, H713 which includes Remote issues - both the original DISH branded remotes and also when they use third party remotes that uses IR. There is also the support for the OTA single tuner dongle that stopped working, I forgot if that problem started with H710 or was it H711.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

I was going to say I was also impacted, but after all the times it was me, I figured "here we go again" and tried to use a different device. It was also impacted, so it wasn't just me.

Was down due to an emergency update at the ISP. They did email me seconds before they took it down and apologized for the short notice.

However once the server was back online NGINX failed to start.

I was at the grocery store and just rebooted the entire server and everything came back up again.

Just got home from the grocery store I will bring in the groceries and then take a look at what NGINX failed the first time.

Ok checked it out and for some reason the web server (NGINX) tried starting before the DNS resolver fully loaded. This is why it worked when I rebooted the machine.

Thanks to ChatGPT it had me change the NGINX config to prevent this from happening again.

With that said I can't prevent the ISP from doing emergency upgrades which was the cause of all of this.

Just checked my account and it shows mgm+ at 8.00 per month, but that has red line drawn thru it and shows 0.00 per month. But it doesn't say how long this lasts,...... 1 month, 3 months, forever. I called customer service to get an answer, and they said nothing like that exists. Should I add the offer or not? Already paying them too much, but want to take advantage of something free.

Not for me, mines has no mention of how long aka the offer period and the Terms and conditions the $0.00 is good for. All I see is one can lose $5.00 if you decide to remove it before day 31 after you add it to the account.

Two bugs out and three new bugs in.🐞
Almighty1
Updated to H713 on a Hopper 3 from H712 with Hopper Plus a few hours earlier.

It brought a old problem back:

One of the problems I am seeing is that the Available Joey Software section no longer is showing the Android TV versions even after a manual software reset twice and the nightly reboot. Until it does, nether Technician Android TV download and Hopper Plus is able to check, download and update the Android TV software.

This was a major problem with H703.

H710 removed that dependency but it's broken again.

Are you talking about the Available Joey Software section which goes something like this:
Available Joey W153 W209 J613 J713 J813 K113 J913
Software
in H713 in diagnostics which is directly below the "Switch" section which is what I am referring to that should have a number starting with P which is needed for the
Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4
or the top area where it shows what the current version of the software is for the Hopper 3?

Seeing what your Joey 4/Wireless Joey 4 software version just tells you what is the current software version already installed, until the P version(s) shows up in "Available Joey Software" section which is different for the Hopper Plus, Joey 4, Wireless Joey 4 and it will only list one for the device(s) that exist in one's own configuration which lists what's the latest available, those devices will not be able to check or update their software as it will say "Failed: No Tgt" while "Download ATV Files" in TECHNICIAN SETTINGS under tools will respond with:
"Download ATV Files 3000
This device is not currently targeted for
Android software"
as both are dependent on the P version being listed in the "Available Joey Software" section. It usually takes a few minutes before it shows up. I know with H710-H712, it was not shown and the Download ATV Files worked except since H710, even if you selected everything shown which for me would be the Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 versions, the first download will as a end result only download the Hopper Plus's versions even though it shows all three as downloaded based on what Available Joey Software shows which is always two P numbers P153 and P15317. After the first successful download, the next download will actually download all three and Available Joey Software will reflect that. In H708 (H709 was skipped as no one mentioned it on the forums) and earlier, it always downloaded everything selected and would show 6 P versions in the Available Joey Software area. The Available Joey Software section is how I tell if there is a newer software available for the Hopper Plus and when I see that, I do the Download ATV files first which is where I get my information to post in my other thread, "Latest available software version for Android TV devices - Hopper Plus, Joey 4, Wireless Joey 4". The Download ATV files does not do any install or update the Hopper Plus as I still need to manually hit Menu, Settings, Device Preferences, About, Software Update to update the software.

So with any new Hopper 3 software update, the first things I will check is the Notifications in Settings to see if any of the settings were reset. For the "Remote Control Mode Reminder" setting, I would try it with off, exit notifications then hit TV on the side of the remote to make sure it does not show the reminder before going to notifications andputting it back to on, exit to see if it works correctly before going back to notifications for the other settings. Then I would look at Available Joey Software and regardless if the 2 P versions, one appears to be the 3 digit major version number and the other is the full 5 digit number which is the 3 digit major version number with 2 more digits, exists or not. Attempt to do the Download ATV Software for all 3 Android TV devices Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 until all of them is downloaded and shown in Available Joey Software which should be a total of 6 things added. If Download ATV Software has the no target like since H713, I will wait until I see a P version before I do it.

For reference, it's in the following threads:

Within the last few hours as I did check earlier today when it was still missing, the Available Joey Software line now has added "P154 P15403" which is for the Hopper Plus that I have but my Hopper Plus software is still on P15317, I will do a Download Android TV (ATV) Software for the Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey which are all Android TV devices and then manually do a check update on the Hopper Plus to update the software shortly.

This happened to me. I was outside mowing and my wife came out and said that our nieces and nephews were going to be on the Noon News. She had it on in the bedroom on our Joey3. Since they weren't on yet, I decided to turn it on in the Living Room on our Hopper3. When I selected the channel (through Dish, not OTA) the Joey3 turned itself off. When I went back to the bedroom to turn it back on, the Hopper3 did a reboot. Luckily it all finished before their story came on, but I just found it strange.

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

All Hopper developers are required to turn in their RF Hopper remotes and use only IR remotes.

I guarantee you that the bug will be fixed in two days!
Try it; it will work! They will work 24 hours a day to fix it when the WAF goes into the toilet!

As I was testing 4K on my Hopper 3 running H713 10/7/2026 by watching the NLCS Game 2 on Channel 148-01, I had been using my Dish 52.0 remote to navigate. I grabbed my Harmony One and pressed "Info". This caused the Hopper 3 to crash and restart.

After it restarted, the game finished so I pressed "Options" on the 52.0 remote to access the TV Activity screen. I pressed Select on the tuner with the NLCS game active and arrowed-down to select "Stop Recording". Again, the Hopper 3 crashed and restarted.

After it came back up, I used Recall to return to "Maine Cabin Masters" and when I tried the Options button again, I saw that the NLCS Game was still being recorded. I selected the game, arrowed-down to Stop recording, and this time it stopped recording and didn't crash.

Since I was watching an HD program instead of 4K, I tried the "Info" button and nothing happened. The Harmony One has an IR active indicator when it's transmitting so I know I pressed the button.

It looks like the 2nd or 3rd time I sent "Info" from the Harmony One, the Hopper 3 started to respond again. If I used the Dish 52.0 remote, the Hopper 3 stopped listening to the Harmony One IR commands. It looks like "Info" needs to be pressed twice and that seems to reactivate the IR recognition on the Hopper 3. It seems to stay active, but I didn't try leaving the Hopper 3 alone for an hour or more.

I think you have it. If you start up with the Harmony and then use the 54 remote it confuses the Hopper because you went from IR to RF. It seems to get cranky when you want to go back to the Harmony.

I checked this and you are correct. My Harmony 665 remote worked fine until my wife used the Dish remote. After the Dish remote is used I have to push or hold a button down until the 665 starts working again.

I lost IR control of my H3 after the H398 update in September of 25. We were using the Harmony Hub remote system from Logitech. We have been using the H3 OEM remote to turn the receiver on and off ever since then.

H398 Software Version
BTW my bedroom H3 does not have this problem where I am using a Harmony 650. Also has there been any more feedback? Are they still working on this or what?

I think I have a separate issue with our Hopper 3 when watching/recording a 4K event. I have had many instances of it spontaneously restarting when I "disturbed" it during a 4K event. I learned to not touch the remote after a given point.

But it might be the IR code subroutine and 4K that make it touchy. I'll try it Wednesday night during the NLCS Game 3.

I was having similar issues last night while watching and recording the NLCS game on 148. When I tried resuming the game at one point the screen went blank and I couldn't get my H3 to respond to any remote commands. Eventually the Hopper went to a HD channel but still no remote response. After a while the Hopper went into a re-boot cycle. This happened at least 3 times. I was using an IR universal remote only.

A little frustrating to have the game broken up like that but at least the Brewers won:)

Excellent suggestion.
Yea, I've only been a CIO for the last 30 years! :)
Trust me, when something important breaks, they get to own it!

Continuing the Kilauea thread in the Pub here. Perhaps the Iceland one too next time there's remarkable activity.

Currently there is precursory lava flowing into the crater, leading to the next episode that'll probably start within the next day.

You can see the pace of inflation / deflation here. It serves as the primary predictor for when the expect the eruptions, which coincide w/ inflation turning into significant deflation and last for several hours on average with significant fountaining.

Wife and I like the AfarTV feeds, for the discussion along w/ them, though they're otherwise just mirrors of the official USGS feeds.

Oooo, quite the show now. All three vents have doming and overflows. The cone that built up around the North vent lost its upper quarter at 02:50 Oct 17 and is now spewing lava at a healthy rate. Don't know if I would say it's a fountain, but it's close.

edit: The USGS has called the official start of Episode 55 as starting at 03:19 HST Oct 17, 2026:

Alert Level: WATCH, Color Code: ORANGE 2026-10-17 13:43:56 UTC
HVO/USGS Volcanic Activity Notice

Volcano: Kilauea (VNUM #332010)

Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Issued: Saturday, October 17, 2026, 3:43 AM HST
Source: Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
Notice Number: 2026/H488
Location: N 19 deg 25 min W 155 deg 17 min
Elevation: 4091 ft (1247 m)
Area: Hawaii

Summary: Episode 55 of the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began at 3:19 AM HST on October 17, 2026.

Volcanic Activity:
Episode 55 of lava fountaining in Halemaʻumaʻu began at the summit of Kīlauea began at 3:19 AM HST on October 17, 2026.

Fountain heights are relatively low at about 100-150 feet (30-45 m), and it is not clear whether this episode will evolve to the same heights as previous episodes. Continuous overflows from the vents began yesterday, October 16, just before 6 a.m. HST and transitioned into episode 55 fountains at 3:19 a.m. HST this morning. The current forecast is for winds are blowing from the north-northeast direction, which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and volcanic material may be distributed to the south-southwest direction from Halemaʻumaʻu.
  • All eruptive vents and lava flows are confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Tephra fall from volcanic ash clouds is greatest within 3 miles (5 km) of the vents, lighter ash and Pele's Hair may stay suspended for large distances from the vents.

Kīlauea seems to be returning to the "normal" eruption script, impressive fountaining from the North Vent. For once, the V2 Cam has the best overall shot:

The lava flows have covered a good portion of the Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor.

Looks like Episode 55 is over at 09:00 HST, just under six hours. The USGS said the fountains reached 720' or 220 meters.

Speaking of waffles, I'm going to put my mini waffle iron on stove so I'll remember to make waffles in the morning... Had some last week, been awhile.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....
