DirectTV was fast ... driving into work this morning on the radio I heard a commercial for DirectTV ... it went something to the effect:

"Dish is no long carrying channel X. Channel X has this program and that program and this other program. Come to DirectTV where you get it all ..."

All he is saying is since Dish makes a decent profit, they as a company should absorb some of the cost of the locals they carry instead of passing it on to the costumers or pulling them off of the air.

I happen to dissagree with him as I do not think Dish's profits are anywhere near 44%.

What if they are 44%?

This states that the local network affiliates are looking for more money to make up for lower ratings and not being able to depend on the ad generating revenue like they did in the past. It states that there could be a freeze on negotiations while the digital transition is going on and that CBS could be the biggest battle on retransmission agreements as they do not have other diversities. It also states that the local network stations will be demanding more money and ...

"Comcast, Time Warner Cable , Cablevision , DirecTV and Dish Network are the losers, while CBS, Disney, GE, News Corporation, Sinclair, LIN and other local station owners, including Belo and Hearst-Argyle are the winners."

Look for your rates to go up as a result (even more than they already have).

What's that got to do with anything? This discussion is about Dish and locals disputes.

As is pointed out above, gross profit margin doesn;t account for a lot of Dish's (or others) costs, especially in DBS.

Gross profit margin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I.E. it covers programming and maybe set top boxes. Not things like, you know, uplink centers and satellites and the like.

I know that you don't want to believe that they are making 44% profit, but facts, are facts. Face it. I can't think of any other business that makes that kind of money, can you? The locals are barely making it, and are just trying to survive. In backing Dish in these disputes you are attempting to destroy competition, which will end up costing you far more in the long-run, you just don't know it.

Yes ,So from the looks of this info E* employs more people then D* and makes less money.
Yes, and my God, can't you hear the words what are coming out of your mouth?

I have a GREAT idea for these networks!

WHY don't they make tv shows that aren't CRAP, where the writers or actors aren't always on strike, and that people want to watch? Also, showing 6 episodes or so, then going on hiatus for 1 year, ALSO kills their viewership! That way the ratings will go UP, and they can charge more for ads. Also, get rid of those stinking BUGS that cover 1/3 of the screen. Seems like a couple of simple fixes to me!

They want to charge Dish more, because of simple GREED, no other reason.

Its got everything to do with it, D* is making over 49% from a much Higher Gross income. According to your math.
Net profit is For D* $1.5 Billion
E* is $861 Million
Last time I checked a Billion was more then a Million.

Um, the only goods Dish sells are programming and set top boxes. The don't sell uplink centers or satellites. Thus, they are not included in the gross profit margin.

Fixed cost are excluded. Fixed cost are defined as business expenses that are not dependent on the level of production or sales. Doesn't matter how much programming they sell, the cost of Dish satellites, uplinks, and many of their employees are the same.

For example, If I sold hot dogs for a $1 and they cost me $0.25 each. My Gross Profit Margin is (1-0.25)/1=75%. But I only sell 5 an hour and have to pay a guy $8/hour to sell them. Plus, I need a $10 cylinder of propane to fuel the cart every day. So in an 8 hour day, I sell 40 hot dogs for $40 revenue. But my costs were $0.25*40=$10 for the hot dogs, $8*8=$64 for the guy selling them, and $10 for fuel. So my total expenses were $84. $74 I pay if I sell 40 hot dogs of 4,000, that isn't in my gross profit margin. So even though my gross profit margin is 75%, I'm losing $44 dollars a day.

Read Dish's last quarterly earnings DISH Network Corporation :: DISH Network(R) Reports Third Quarter 2008 Financial Results

DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH) today reported total revenue of $2.94 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2008, a 5.1 percent increase compared with $2.79 billion for the corresponding period in 2007.
Net income totaled $92 million for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2008, compared with $200 million during the corresponding period in 2007. The $108 million decline in net earnings primarily related to impairments on marketable and non-marketable securities. Basic earnings per share were $0.20 for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2008, compared with basic earnings per share of $0.45 during the corresponding period in 2007.
Revenue=$2.94B
Net Income (i.e. Profit)=$92M
$92M/$2.94B= ~ 3.1%. Nowhere near 44%

It seems like your the one that wants them to make 44% profit. That would justify your hated of Dish and Charlies tactics. But as as clearly proven, Dish does not make 44 cents on every dollar we give them. More like 3 or 4 pennies.

I was trying to remember (NYC people help me out here), we lost WWOR some years back for this kind of reason. Time Warner Cable yanked WPIX for a bit too.

All of this is nothing new. But it can be a PITA.

Over the past few weeks, I have had problems connecting to streaming services (Netflix, HBO et al). When I go to the TV's native Channels, I have no problem. The Dish internet troubleshooter shows I have a good internet connection. I'm wondering whether it's an issue with my internet provider or a problem with the Dish software on the Hopper Plus. Anyone else seeing this?

I have a DISH Hopper 3 (Software H713) with Hopper Plus (Software P15403). I have not tried streaming services but I primarily watch TVB Jadeworld international package which is only available by streaming and when I have an issue, I usually have to go to a non-streaming satellite channel first before the streaming channels will work again. What software versions do you have and what is the error message if any are showing on your screen? or is that Dish downloading logo just stuck and never finishes?

Personally, I tend to be the type that drives a vehicle for a lot of years....do my own oil changes and other fluid changes. Just replaced the spark plugs and a couple coils. Youtube is great for things like this.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Lately my eight year old Dell laptop has been shutting off even when I have a full battery. I have had to keep it plugged up all the time to keep this from happening. Any idea what is causing this? I replaced the battery about three years ago.

A recalibration might be needed. Even if it shows full, the individual cells may have become unbalaced. And the BMS chip in the battery reports false information to the pc.
Try this. Start it up in the bios/uefi and leave it there until the battery dies and it shuts off.
It might just keep running longer than in Windows. Or run for a short while and shut off.
If it's the first case. Probably just needs a balancing. If the latter, the pack might just be dead.
Not throwing stones but perhaps just a cheaply constructed battery with substandard cells. Could be.

Patience. Keep restarting it in bios/uefi until it won't fire up anymore.
Then plug the charger in and let it complete a full charge. And see what happens. If it's better.
Do the same thing one more time. Run it until it dies dead-dead. Then just let it charge, pc shut off.
When charged, it might be better. It might not be.

There are bench jigs that read the actual BMS and override it to let a tech manually monitor and charge the separate packs. They can also reset any "time bombs" in it that cause an otherwise good pack to show bad.
Maybe Santa will be good to me some year.

You might just need a new battery. Maybe the PC power management chip is going. A Dell common thing.
Leaving a laptop plugged in with a full battery is known to reduce the life. Asus for one recommends that you don't leave the charger plugged in all of the time even when shut down. And setting Windows to charge the battery to 85% instead of 100% increases life.
That's all I got.

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.
harshness
If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Now that I've had the v5 kit with the Mini Router, it's not as bad as I first thought. Yes, no DHCP reservations, but you can set up multiple SSIDs that have separate IPv4 subnets, and like the big brother, you can select from 192.168.x.0/24 or 10.x.0.0/16 (where "x" is 1-4).

You can also split a subnet and have different SSIDs for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz channels to handle some IoT devices. I haven't discovered what subnet the 2nd NIC on the router assigns, I'm guessing it's the first subnet.
