Hi, Radar here.

I wanted to confer with everyone and see what your results have been for this satellite 83.0 W AMC 9, expressly the RTN East and West feed channels.

Since the Equity Broadcasting Network went out of business, I have been missing the RTN channels that I used to love so much. I know that they put feed channels on this satellite, but I have a very difficult time pulling them in. I do get them, but they are really sporadic and touchy.

I am near Omaha, Nebraska. I have a Winegard DS-2076 (76 cm dish) an Invacom QPH-031 LNBF, a DN SW 21 switch and a Coolsat 5000 receiver.

I can look in on the neighboring satellites at 79.0W AMC 5 and 85.0W AMC 2 and pull in channels with 95% - 98% quality, but when I dial in 83.0 W AMC 9, I am barely over the threshold (65-67%) at my best.

My brother lives 15 miles to the west of me and has the identical setup, but he can pull these RTN channels in at ~90% quality. When he checks the adjacent sats (79 and 85) he gets virtually the same levels as I do, here at my place.

I have these RTN channels set on TP 11.735 GHz, Horizontal. SR 4.440 MS/s. The same as my brother has, but it seems that something is blocking or reducing the signal from 83W for me.

There are no trees in the line of sight for this sat for me, it is just as open and clear as it is for the neighboring sats, which work well.

I am going to go out on March 3-4-5 and take a look at where the solar outage calculator tells me the sat should be at that time, by referencing the sun. I do not believe that anything is in my way (like a tree or the barn or anything). It is pretty wide open and clear in that direction (and the signal from 79W and 85W helps to confirm this). But, I will make sure of this.

When I do get these RTN channels to come in on 83W, I cannot move the dish east/west or up/down to improve the signal quality. The dish appears to be set at the optimum position and I cannot improve upon it.

What I do not understand is that my brother can pull 83W in just fine and that I can pull the neighboring satellites (79 and 85) just fine, but for me, 83W is extremely hindered.

I have compared settings (TP frequency, symbol rate, etc) and surveyed the line of sight path and I cannot find anything that is wrong or in the way! My brother has researched tis problem too, and he does not see the problem either, it is elluding him as well.

Anyone of you have any suggestions? At this point, I will take any suggestion, because I have exhausted all of the most logical reasons already. The problem must be something unique, something that I have not been trained to detect.

Thanks to anyone who has the time to respond with any ideas on this problem. I will appreciate any ideas at this time! I am up against the wall here!

Have you tried a different receiver?

Your dish is not motorized, correct?

On 83W, how well do you get 11775H?

When RTN went to 83W, I had to set up a fixed dish specifically for it. After people reported the improvement on RTN, my motorized dish could get it.

Fixed dish: (87cm)
11775H - 90-91%
RTN - 86-88%

Motorized dish on 83W: (90cm)
11775H - 87%
RTN - 69-70%

For whatever it's worth, here is a little story about my journey to get RTN.

Wow I wish I got readings on RTN like the rest of you have. Usually between 35-41 on the 30" Winegard. I may have tree issues as I can't go below 79w as it stands now. I'm just happy I've got a decent reliable signal I can watch. Blind

I have not tried a different model, but I have tried three or four different Coolsat 5Ks.

My dish is motorized (a PowerTech DG-280). I have also tried an SG-2100 , a DG-240 and a DG-380 and three other DG-280's. I am using USALS motor positioning logic. I can go manual with DiSEqC 1.2 and step the motor/dish east or west and I find that it i right on the center as it is.

11.775 H is coming in at 76% signal level and 87-88% quality. My sat ID banner shows NBC News Channel on this TP.

Blind,

You have a different receiver though. The scale for your signal meter is different than it is for our receivers. On your meter, 35-37% is likely equivalent to my 63-66%.

I'm getting this at 60%.
S
Other receivers vary a lot. Even your subscription DN and DTV receivers read differently. The DTV receier has a scale of 0-120% instead of 0-100%. Why? I cannot explain that one. I think they do it to fool the customer. It makes the signal strength look better, I guess. Kinda like grading your term paper on a curve. A grade in your class on your paper of 92% looks better than the true and accurate grade of 77%!

I believe it is to fool the customer, Echostar receivers go to 120%(LOL how you can get above 100% is marketing only), but BellTV receivers which are exactly the same except for the software only go to 100% max.

All receiver do have a different theshold, the Viewsat I used to have would lock with 12-15%, but my Pansat and Visionsat need about 25-30% to lock. These values were on the same channel with the same undersized dish and switch/cabling aimed at 123W.

Guapoharry,

Your motorized dish is 14cm larger than mine and your signal quality is only slightly above mine. Sometimes I can detect 69-70%, but it is usually around 66-67% and sometimes undetectable (below 64%).

The other day, it was really warm and sunny here. My brother and I looked over my dish and tried playing with the azimuth, elevation and LNBF focal distance and polarity settings. We could not improve the signal, only decrease it.

Because of the angle of the sunlight, we did notice something that may prove to be the problem. When standing at a certain position and looking at the surface of the dish reflector, it appears that there is a bow or warp to it near the upper left mounting bolt. You can not feel anything with your hand, but you can see it from the front of the dish when it is in the right light. It is extremely hard to detect, but it is also very close to the "HOT" zone of the dish itself.

I judge the "HOT" zone to be 1/2 way in between the two upper bolts and about 2 inches below.

If this is the reason for my problem, I will be able to confirm it quite easily. I could replace just the reflector plate first (easiest) and see what results I get then. If that doesn't improve anything, then I will install a completely new dish with all of the brackets and everything. I already have two new dishes (Winegard DS-2076) still in the box in the spare room. I bought them for a couple of people to install, but they were both layed off work and so I have them now.

It sure would be nice to find a resolution to this problem. Sometimes while messing around with it all, I notice that I suddenly have a fair signal (at least sufficient to be viewable) but in a day or so it is back to up and down and in and out again.

When the weather turns up, I will experiment further and let you guys know if I find a solution.

Thanks for all your replies.

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Where is it going to come from -- specifically?

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

Stay out of my office. I rarely have shoes or socks on in the office. My office and business is at home though :clapping

I just thought her behavior, including the bare feet thing, was disrespectful to her position.

Stargate SG-1 cancelled, Atlantis renewed

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

They didn't sell many, they were pricey and not out long. Quickly got replaced by the Hopper.
T
They were high-end specialty, somewhat buggy and the 612/622/722 just overwhelmed it in popularity.
HipKat
I think they were more of a transitional receiver bridging the VIPs to the Hopper. They were a PITA to install and were buggy. Personally, I thought at the time that they were the best receiver out there. The versatility of the VIP's with the new Hopper GUI and, by far, the coolest-looking front plate and lighting.

I don't recall that they came out just before hopper, but rather that they came out even before 722. Or could be thinking of 921.

As to the title pf the post, "rare" does not necessarily mean valuable or desirable.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Was down due to an emergency update at the ISP. They did email me seconds before they took it down and apologized for the short notice.

However once the server was back online NGINX failed to start.

I was at the grocery store and just rebooted the entire server and everything came back up again.

Just got home from the grocery store I will bring in the groceries and then take a look at what NGINX failed the first time.

Ok checked it out and for some reason the web server (NGINX) tried starting before the DNS resolver fully loaded. This is why it worked when I rebooted the machine.

Thanks to ChatGPT it had me change the NGINX config to prevent this from happening again.

With that said I can't prevent the ISP from doing emergency upgrades which was the cause of all of this.
