Receiving 118.7 while RVing

I am trying to receive Dish Network satellite 118.7 (international channels) in my RV. Here are the options (in order of decrasing preference) I can think of, but does anyone know of manufacturers/dealers able to provide/install one of those options?

1) Have an system on the RV roof which can automatically lock onto this satellite. Preferably in a dome. I have already checked with Winegard, KingDome and TracVision, they don't support this satellite.
2) Use a crank-up on the roof.
3) Use a tripod.

Of course a 500+ or 1000+ will do the job, but are there any versions which could be installed in a dome or as a crank-up?

Guys, thank you for your inputs.

As Nelson61, Garys and Oljim pointed out, I need a specific FSS lnb to pick-up that dish. Though, this is only one part of the issue as far as I understand it.

If I want to have an automatic tracking system (I would already be pleased with stationary), I guess that I need to achieve two things, first to get the satellite signal, so I need the right size dish and the right LNB. Second, I need to have the satellite tracking system locking onto that satellite. This is where I believe I will have a problem if I change the LNB of a Winegard dish (or any other manufacturer), as Nelson61 suggests, since 118.7 is not part of the supported satellites, so it will not be traked. Or can I reprogram the system to track that satellite?

Harshness, you suggest using mounts to support conventional dishes. This might be a good option for me, since it does not seem anyone designs a programmable traking system; I could mount a standard 500+/1000+ dish on that RV mount. Do you have references? Are those crank-up, or mounted on the ladder?

Harshness suggests to go away from 118W. Well, I would be pleased, but some of the channels I am interested in are unfortunately only available on that satellite :-(

I think I saw similar units from KVH, but it is not on their website.

Take this one and custom fit a Dishpro 118.7/119 lnb on it and you are in business. Does not need to "find" 118 since it only needs to lock on 119 and 118 will be there also.

What you guys are all missing is that 118.7 is an FSS band satellite not a DBS Band satellite and that means it is LOW POWER. That is why the Superdish and 500+/1000+ dishes are so huge. They are about as small as you can get and still receive a reliable signal from an FSS satellite. Yes it requires a special LNB, and yes no domes will track it (nor will they ever since you would need to put a nearly 1 Meter dish in a dome to get it to work). So the smallest dish you will ever want to use for 118.7 is either an old superdish, or a 500+/1000+ dish. Here's some more info about the difference between FSS and DBS satellites

Fixed Satellite Service- FSS, 11.7 - 12.2 GHz

Part of the Ku-band spectrum used for Fixed Satellite Service. Virtually every dish in the 1 meter to 1.7 meter size is used for FSS band reception. FSS satellites can be spaced 2 degrees apart, which limits their maximum power output to avoid adjacent satellite interference. Today the FSS band is used by Hughesnet ,and Starband for satellite internet. Free-To-Air (FTA) satellite systems also use the FSS band. The FSS band is also used for transmitting television shows, back haul feeds for remote news broadcast and many more companies for various data/video transmissions.

Direct Broadcast Satellite - DBS 12.2 - 12.7 GHz

The Broadcast Satellite sub-band of the Ku-band is commonly called the DBS band. The D in DBS is sometimes called Digital, and others will say it means Direct. Some consider this band to be called the BSS band for Business Satellite Service. That is not correct. BSS is a term used to describe a type of service and not the actually band of frequencies used to deliver that service. We will call this the DBS Band because we like DBS, no other reason.
The DBS band is reserved for high powered satellites intended for the delivery of digital television. DIRECTV and DISH Network are DBS Satellite system providers. DBS Satellites are spaced 9 degrees apart. The wide spacing of DBS satellites allow for very high powered transmissions which results in the ability to use a small 18" dish.

As far as getting your internationals in a convenient fashion here's a thought. I'm guessing since you want to take your TV along that you don't really care about "getting away from it all" since the TV kinda ruins that idea. How about only going to parks with internet access and getting a sling box for the house (or a 922 as "soon" as they are available)? no more worrying about setup of a dish, Line-of-sight issues, etc. Just hook up to the internet and watch TV. Technically you can even do sling over a cell phone internet connection (Scott does this with his carputer) but I'm not sure how good the quality will be.

Whichever way you decide to go best of luck to you, and I wish you many happy trips in your RV.

I think the problem is your missing that we're not missing the point. The recommendation that I made involves a factory DISH Network dish as opposed to some funky dome unit.

No. I think you are stuck with a tripod

I always like the standard definition single LNB that works with directv that comes in a dome and will track satellites. I don't believe their international programming is available on the 101W bird unfortunately. I'm just saying a single LNB is easier than trying to skew correctly 2 or more LNBs while rolling down the road.

What language are you looking for?

I'm wondering if a 30" dish and a linear LNB on a tripod and a good little FTA box like the Traxis wouldn't be a great choice...and no subscriptions.

Harder to setup but tons of international programming. If you were looking for Arabic, Spanish programming FTA is the way to go. Especially in Florida, being so close to the Atlantic satellites.

If it wasn't for what I want, I wouldn't need any of this.

Do I need a collection of handheld radios, scanners and speed enforcement countermeasures? Nope, but I want them. Very little, if any of the software used to interface with these devices is available on Linux.

To each there own but I've found that Windows can't do much more than Linux can. Can't have everything.

For niche use cases, yes I agree. Kali for ethical hacking and security testing, and running a Cacti server for network monitoring are the two things I have experience in. Plus thousands and thousands of other things, but for every day use I just can't see it. The owner of the GMRS repeater that I pay to access is changing the Tx DPL tones tomorrow, while Chirp is available on Linux, the software to program my MXT500 is not.

I'm sorry, but the Dock is optional. I run Arch Linux, and tbh, as someone without specific, niche needs like your radios, the GUI is really no different, and I worry less about my OS being infiltrated. The OS is less bloated; there is no OEM Software that I have to dig through to disable or remove; coding is not a massive pile of problems that require constant patching, and if there is a problem, I can easily fix it myself (ChatGPT is great for Linux or any programming issues), and setting it up to look the way I want it to does not take days/weeks. It takes barely an hour. Not to mention, a cold boot takes barely 30 seconds from Power on the being fully booted.

Ubuntu is a joke, btw

I have no OEM bloat, on CTO devices where I can access the drive, I order it with the smallest allowed drive and crack the device open throw the factory drive in the garbage and put in my own WD Black and install Windows from bootable media. For Windows bloat, I install Windows using the English - World option which limits preinstalled MS bloat.

Windows and Office features I wish to block, like CoPilot and Cortana, macro enabled Office files and others are blocked with GPOs.

Between keeping all software up to date, doing firmware updates, putting IoT devices on a separate VLAN, running Symantec Endpoint (say what you want about it, it's been good to me) and practicing safe hex, I'm vigilant but not paranoid about security.

With NVMe SSDs, my cold boot up time on all devices is under 30 secs as well. Fast boot disabled, BitLocker drive encryption enabled.

I have nothing against Linux, been paying with it on and off since 2004ish, it's just not the right solution for me.

As I said above, and, FWIW, I run Win11 Pro and Arch on separate 250 GB NVME drives, using F8 to select which I boot to, with a 1TB SSD for storage, accessible to both OSs and a third formatted Nvme I want to use to learn Kali. It was much faster to setup Arch than it was to strip down Windows. Windows still takes much longer to boot.

What is so fantabulous about the Windows UI? By many accounts, it has been going downhill since Windows 7.

There are Linux desktops that offer Windows or Mac UIs, yet you don't hear much chatter about them outside of questions about when the creators might get sued.

Because it's what I prefer. I know I've said this a few times, I use Open Shell to give me the cascading start menu a la WIN 95 and NT4.0. The only reason I went from Windows Vista to 7 back in the day was because of Classic Shell. I cannot stand anything other than the OG start menu from 30+ years ago. I'm using ExplorerPatcher to give me Windows 10 UI elements of the taskbar and right click context menus.

If you could take a look at how I set up Windows 95, you'd find many similarities to how I use 11.

Hughesnet cancelling email addresses

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Finished it this evening. General impressions with no story spoilers, but will spoil it anyways as it just came out today.

Not quite as impactful of a finale as past seasons I thought, we'll see how far down the rabbit hole things go as the latest plot twists and turns unravel. Thought this season had a full episode or two too much rom-com style disagreements, but it was more or less paid off later. Ultimately didn't enjoy that being more of a throughline in the stories this season compared to what I remember of the priors.

My least favorite of the 3 seasons, but still very good. Really wonder how far they'll go with things, hard to see a nuclear attack or something ever actually happening. They just had a better story to tell and more meaningful beats in the prior season.

Regarding the no sound bug when watching 4K HDR events or DVR recordings with Dolby set to ON:
I got rolled back to H708 last night after getting an email from the support team. It fixed the bug.

The email indicated that they believed they found the issue, and if the fix works, they would roll it out via an update in the coming weeks.

So... we should see that bug exterminated in the near future.

I went into the Tools menu and requested a Guide Update. I'll try looking at it after the update completes.

edit — I now have the 148-01 4KFox events for Saturday, but not anything for 148-02 or 148-03 which don't even show as available channels. I do have 148-04 4KUSA.

As I recall you have the Flex package. Do you sub to multisport? -02 is FS1 and -03 is ESPN. -01 is Fox so you would get that if you sub to locals.

As an edit, you need to sub to the National Action Pack at $12 a month to receive those channels.

Apple has finally released their Apple TV 4K with built-in Siri and a microphone so it can respond to your queries even if you don't have the remote. It also increases in price, to $299. I had been planning on updating my current Apple TV 4K streamers, but that's $600 for the two of them, and that's a pass at this point.

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Not a bit. IMO, apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only stick I with the Apple tv's is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is not worth sticking with it. Later, Apple!
