I have a couple of questions for the good members of the BVOC (Birdview Owners Club).
I plan to mount a Bullseye II orthomode feedhorn on my Birdview solid. I have the scaler ring honed to accept a standard Chaparral feed. I had the 'rings' milled off of the front of a Co-rotor scaler and mounted it on the back of the BV scaler. I will use the set screw on the co-rotor scaler to secure the feedhorn. This setup works fine with a co-rotor feedhorn.

My problem is that the throat of the orthomode feedhorn is shorter than the co-rotor. When I insert the feedhorn as far as it will go, the mouth of the feedhorn doesn't project past the front of the scaler. See the attachments for more detail. Would one of you fellow Birdview w/orthomode owners take a few minutes to measure how far the mouth of your feedhorn projects from the scaler. If I only need a little more length I can cut a couple of notches into the co-rotor mounting ring. If I need more I may need to remove the co-rotor scaler and tap the Birdview scaler to accept a set screw.

My Birdview had the factory(?) sensor mod. When I got the dish the magnet wheel only had 4 magnets installed!!! I replaced them with 8 new ones. I just received my new GBox 3000 and I haven't had time to test the setup to see if 8 magnets will yield enough pulses to work accurately on ku. I have modded a couple of multiswitches to output 18v on all ports (Thanks for the instructions, pendragon) and have a Pansat 9000 on the way. Once I get the feedhorn installed I'll post an update. A new coat of paint won't hurt anything either... The other two dishes in the pictures are Unimesh 10's. I planted them in a straight line with enough distance between them so they will 'see' over the dish in front of them. That way every dish has an unobstructed view H to H.

I'll get some measurements tomorrow. I found the formulas for focal length and f/D ratio. I'll post my calculations.
D
Dish measurements

I measured the dish and came up with these results:

Measuring the portion of the dish face that can see the feedhorn I came up with:
Diameter = 100.5 inches and Depth = 15.5 inches

focal length (f) = Diameter squared (DxD) divided by 16 times the depth (16 x d)

f = (100.5 x 100.5) / (16 x 15.5) or 10,100 / 248 or f = 40.7268
f/D ratio = 40.73 / 100.5 = 0.405

The edge rolls off a little at the very edge so I also measured the Diameter that seemed to be parabolic and came up with: Diameter= 99.5 inches

f = (99.5 x 99.5) / (16 x 15.5) or 9900.25 / 248 or f = 39.92
f/D ratio = 39.92 / 99.5 = 0.4012

The actual measurement from center of dish to the face of the scaler is 39.25 which is less than the shortest focal length (f) that I calculated. For those who are not familiar with the Birdview the scaler is mounted on rigid rods that are threaded at the tips. No adjustments to the scaler are possible (without modding)

If the orthomode feedhorn is like the co-rotor it likes the focal point to be inside the mouth about 0.25 inch. In that case the feedhorn wouldn't project past the face of the scaler.

Pendragon, thanks for reminding me of the focal length calculations. I must have had a brain fart -
P
My experience with ortho feeds is they like the focal point more inside the feedhorn than one would expect. In terms of the feedhorn projection beyond the scalar rings, I'm calculating about 5mm (about 0.2") for a f/D of 0.40 with typical feedhorn and scalar ring dimensions. If the scalar rings are flush, that would correspond to roughly a f/D of 0.42.

You will lose about 0.4 dB of SNR if the scalar rings are set to 0.42 and the actual f/D is 0.40. That may not sound like much, but it will make a measurable difference. You would be losing about half a foot of your dish diameter. I have found cheating a f/D setting is usually better on the other side, but I do a lot of low elevation work in Colorado with the Atlantic birds.

I'm not familiar with the mounting options and mods for a Birdview, but I've become very liberal with hacksaws, sawzalls, files, spacers and the like when it comes to ensuring my focal point is in the right place and the scalar rings are in the correct f/D position. I use both a bench spectrum analyzer and a USB receiver on Linux that allow me to measure very fine differences in SNR/SQ. I've been surprised how often factory-set or recommended positions for mounting arms, feeds and scalar rings are in the wrong places and result in significant degradation. Feed adjustments and tweaks have been the easiest way for me to improve reception and the ability to lock tough signals.

Calculations are a good starting point, but measurements are often approximate/ambiguous and mathematically modeling feeds/rings/dishes can be almost as much art as science. I always assume I will explore the neighborhood of a calculated position and allow enough mechanical adjustment range to do so.
D
I modified the back of the scaler to allow the feedhorn to project about .3" past the scaler rings. I start at .2" and adjust both ways to get the best signal.

I don't have a spectrum analyzer so I'll have to rely on a Channel Master signal level meter and the Pansat's meter to peak the signal. Would Ku band be more sensitive to focal length adjustments due to the shorter wavelengths?

Thanks for all your help and patience.
P

Go by the SQ readings on the Pansat for these types of measurements rather than signal level. Signal level can send you on wild goose chases because there are many ways it can deceive you. More level does not mean more SNR and SNR is the crux of getting f/D and the focal point optimized.

I would recommend peaking f/D and focal length only on C-band and then check Ku to make sure it is ok. The scalar rings are only tuned for C-band and will have little positive effect on Ku. Ku is far more useful when tuning the mount to track the arc accurately. It sounds like you are on right path with your mods. Good luck and happy hunting!

I know a few people who have plug and play receivers with boomboxes that use them at work due to lack of cell phone service, especially in factory environments surrounded by steal. Someone I used to work with is a FedEx driver now and uses a plug and play receiver in his work truck. In the off-chance when he's in a Sprinter van, he'll use the app via Bluetooth, but his normal truck its a plug and play with a vehicle kit. So while there is a limited market for them, it still exists.

I did that as well, putting one in my Work truck with the antenna kit, trying to do it so WORK didn't see it. :)
EarDemon
I tried to do that, when I did delivery driver work (2010- 2013), we had a fleet of Freightliners. The newer trucks had headunits that were satellite compatible (XM only I think), but lacked the antenna and guts. I got a car kt for my old Roady XT and tried to use it, but at the volume levels I needed have it at to hear it over the diesel engine it sounded like crap, so I used my phone with an aux cable. When I was in the middle of nowhere with no cell service it didn't do me any good though.

At my current job, one of our new cars has the free trial of SXM active, I frequently have to go off site to a location 75 miles away in a rural area and it's nice being able to use the service off of the satellites versus using the app. There are many places on this journey where all three providers lack service.

I have to think maybe more people dont keep track of the monthly XM bill. Every time i renew i put a reminder on my calendar week before its time to renew. My wife told me the other day not to renew her and then i told her you are not going to be able to listen to XM at home. Then she changed her mind...!!

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Has anyone noticed an FF stutter with 713? I used to be able to hit FF a few times and skip smoothly. After 713 (maybe 712), when I skip forward, there is a definite stutter for as many times as I have pressed FF.

Can anyone check on this and report back? Recorded programs and then press skip forward a few times to see if it's smooth? Normally, it just jumps to the right place after the skips.

Guys,
Android is Google. Google is Android. Android OS and Google TV are the same thing.
The Hopper+ and Joey 4's run Android TV, which is Google's television version of Android.
That means under the hood, you have:
  • Linux kernel
  • Android framework
  • Google TV / Android TV interface
  • Google Play Store for TV apps
Alexa is the competition. Google is not going to host their competition.
The old Hopper Carbon UI is NOT Google so that's why Alexa was on there.
H
Understood. But here's the rub - Google Assistant setup is ALSO missing from the Hopper Plus setup. I'm a paraplegic.and need to use voice controls as much as possible but I can't press a button on the remote to activate Google Assistant. I prefer ALEXA (or ALEXA+) but I have one older google device and will go that route IF they make it available. BTW calling Dish Customer Service is no help- they just say they have no info on if/when there will be an update.

Yes, many have hacked a DirecTV or Dish Network dish before. Quite undersized, but would receive the 97w KU stations with an LNBF swap. Make a template to set the LNBF face angle and distance from the reflector. Remove the current circular polarity LNBFs and make a bracket to hold the replacement linear LNBF in the correct centered position. Remember to set the polarity skew.

would probably also work well for NHK on 101W and possibly for PBS on 99W. I used one for a while on 30W. Just keep in mind that because it's undersized for those satellites, it might work fine in clear weather but won't have much margin to account for signal degradation during rain/snow

If you can find one, the Shaw / Star Choice 75e ellipticals are great for use on 97, 99, and 101W. They are really just rebranded ChannelMaster 75 cm reflectors and use linear LNBFs by default out of the box.

Everyone else's mileage may vary.

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

Misapplication isn't something that the casual coder can identify. They can only discover, the hard way, that it doesn't work at some point.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

24 team playoff seems to be real close.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:
  • All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
    • Independent of record too! Bonus.
  • MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
  • I'm out of ideas.
Cons
  • Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
    • Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
  • Going to start resting players?

    • Resting players could make games dumb.
    • Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.

One of the pro's I see is in a year with so many undefeated teams they have a good chance of an opening. Few years back you had lower divisions that didnt get a shot. I love collage football and I have no problem with that addition.

We are in what week 5 now? Been two real good ranked games to watch.....Other than that top 25 teams are playing nothing.

Oh, I Hate the idea ...

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

Try it; it will work! They will work 24 hours a day to fix it when the WAF goes into the toilet!
Excellent suggestion.

I think I have a separate issue with our Hopper 3 when watching/recording a 4K event. I have had many instances of it spontaneously restarting when I "disturbed" it during a 4K event. I learned to not touch the remote after a given point.

But it might be the IR code subroutine and 4K that make it touchy. I'll try it Wednesday night during the NLCS Game 3.

I was having similar issues last night while watching and recording the NLCS game on 148. When I tried resuming the game at one point the screen went blank and I couldn't get my H3 to respond to any remote commands. Eventually the Hopper went to a HD channel but still no remote response. After a while the Hopper went into a re-boot cycle. This happened at least 3 times. I was using an IR universal remote only.

A little frustrating to have the game broken up like that but at least the Brewers won:)

Yea, I've only been a CIO for the last 30 years! :)
Trust me, when something important breaks, they get to own it!

Loaded H713 software on my Hopper 3 last week. Have not seen any change in the IR/RF remote issues with my Harmony 700.
Has Dish acknowledged this is a problem and are they committed to fixing it?
I'd be happy to roll back to last July.

I got 713 a few days ago and nothing has changed concerning the IR/RF remote issues.
