Here's some exciting news: :sarcasm:

" The Big 12 and Big East might play a bowl game in Yankee Stadium beginning in 2010. The game would take place between Christmas and New Year's and feature the seventh-place Big 12 team and the third- or fourth-place team in the Big East.

Big 12 officials told the New York Times that they planned to sign an agreement in the near future. ..."

Unlike many northern cities (no offense) NYC is certainly worth visiting in December, but what is the point of a bowl game. NYC is not a college market. It just is not.

And Insider, you are exactly correct. This is the source of the sorry and silly excuse that touts of woeful conferences like the Leastleftovers spew out. The broken BcS system set up uneven matchups based on trying to do some kind of "affirmative action" system, as in this case with 7th in a legitimate Major conference plays the 3rd place in the Leastleftovers, creating an nearly even matchup. Because 3rd in the Leastleftovers would lose by 50 to 3rd in a True Major.

What do you have against the Big East?

Sam, people LIKE collegiate football in the Northeast. What is it going to take for you to realize that?

IIRC, the Big East has produced some fine players- ever heard of that Larry Fitzgerald guy? He came from Pittsburgh.
S
What do you have against the Big East?

It exists.

Seriously, the Leastleftovers is a solid mid-major conference. Right on par with CUSA, Mountain West, WAC, etc. A mid-major. Nothing wrong with that.

But, under the broken BcS cartel, one of two things will happen this year, as every year. The other mid-majors must go undefeated to get a trip to the lowest BcS bowl and a few $$. Otherwise, they will be told to pound sand. But the Leastleftover "champion" will, AUTOMATICALLY, go to a BcS bowl, no matter what. Wrong. Or, worse yet, and this will happen some year, the Leastleftover "champion" will be undefeated, in which case we will be force to sit through a laughable BcS final. Evil.

If the Leastleftovers were replaced in the cartel by the Mountain West, or the cartel was simply declared illegal (which it is) you would not hear a peap out of me about the Leastleftovers.

Yes, they are called Nittany Lions.

I like my local minor league team. I know they are not the Yankees. I like my local community theatre. I know it is not Broadway. I like my neighbor's garden and the stuf he gives me. I know it is not the Great Valley of California. Etc.

If you equate what goes on in Piscataway to what goes on in Gainsville, you do not understand college football. It is a fundamentally different level.

You left out the MAC conference in several places in this post ....

I would consider the MAC a Mid Major
I would also consider the MAC as a conference to get many of your "Unknown" players.
Look at all the QB's that have come out of it in the last 10-15 years not to mention the effect Mr. Cribbs has had as a Non QB/ special teams player. btw, he to was a QB in the MAC.

Well, the truth is...Sam is speaking the truth. College football is not and will never be a big time sport in the northeast, outside of certain pockets like Happy Valley. Very odd, since high school football is as much a religion in Pennsylvania as it is in Texas.

People will tune in to big national games, but college football will never take over the psyche of the region like it does elsewhere. Here in the City, in the Fall people are so wrapped in the playoff/World Series aspirations of the Yankees and Mets, and the fortunes of the Giants and Jets, there is little time available to think about college football. They'll watch OSU-USC from 8-11 on a Saturday night, but after that people are calling talk shows about Eli Manning, Rex Ryan, and Joba Chamberlain...not college football.

I was in Pensacola Florida the week before Memorial Day weekend a few years ago, and I drove over to New Orleans as well. Ninety percent of the sports talk on the radio was about college football, even in their 'down time'. It was weird.

Rutgers will always have local support, so will Boston College, Pittsburgh, etc. But even when those teams are good it's not like everyone is talking about them. College basketball is huge in the northeast. College football is not.

Also, for some reason, College Football seems like a more rural thing than an urban experience.

On the rare occasion College Gameday is broadcasting from a bigger city with tall buildings, something just doesn't seem right. Maybe that's my own personal perception of the whole collegiate football experience, but I've always viewed college football as a rural thing.

I was in Orange Beach, AL on my honeymoon. It was the first week of June 1995. I bought the Mobile newspaper, and the lead sports story was a preview of the 1995 Iron Bowl. That was just bizarre to me, and I had been living in College Station, TX for five years at that point.

CFN actually has a good article on the whole "boot the xxxxx from the BCS," though you have to discount the headline (it's a joke)

Scout.com: Cavalcade of Whimsy - Boot The Big East

1. The Big East should be kicked out of the BCS for the Mountain West
Because of the emergence of the Mountain West in recent years, with Utah, BYU, and TCU playing so well on the big stages, and with a sprinkling of wins here and there by the league's lesser teams over the BCS schools, the league deserves the sixth automatic spot in the BCS and the Big East should be booted out. Cincinnati? Connecticut? Louisville? These are basketball schools, and if they have any success on the gridiron there's a little bit of attention, but that's from fans waiting for Midnight Madness to start up. The ratings are mediocre for Big East games, and the conference is permanently crippled after losing Virginia Tech, Miami, and Boston College. It's the Mountain West's time.

You Lie!!! … Utah was fantastic against Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl, and BYU shocked Oklahoma in the season opener this season. TCU is the real deal, and the Mountain West owned the Pac 10 throughout most of last year. If you want to include the Mountain West in the BCS party, then fine. The league already has a permanent spot (for the most part) just by getting its champion to finish in the top 12 of the final BCS rankings, but it should probably get the seventh automatic bid. If you want to kick one league out and keep it at six leagues, then the Big East shouldn't be booted. The Big Ten probably should.

Actually, to be more accurate, the Mountain West shouldn't be included. When you say the Big East should be booted out from the BCS, what are you basing this on? The perception is that the league can't win the big games, and while that's true, it wins a whole bunch of decent ones. If you took all six BCS leagues, along with the Mountain West, over the last three years and the first two weeks of this season, which league is the best in non-conference play against other BCS teams, the Mountain West, and Notre Dame?

No. 1 overall is the SEC, who has won 56% of those non-conference games, but it's top-heavy. Florida, Georgia, and LSU account for most of the wins, but 56% is still impressive. No. 2 is the Pac 10, winning 55% of those non-conference games, but USC is the one to thank for that. The Trojans account for 11 of the wins, and if you take them out of the equation, the Pac 10 has won just 47%.

And then comes the stunner. The only other league to win more than half of its games over the last three years against BCS teams, the Mountain West, and Notre Dame is the Big East coming out on the right side 53% of the time. So where's the Mountain West?

The Big 12 is No. 4 winning 48% of those games, carried by Texas, the Big Ten is No. 5, winning 47% of those games (brought down by Ohio State), and the Mountain West is sixth winning 46% of those games. While that's still relatively impressive, it's not like the league is ripping up the outside world, and the results are disastrous if you take out TCU and Utah from the top-heavy league. Oh yeah, we're missing one conference.

If you're desperate to boot out a league from the BCS, the Big East isn't the one you should focus on; the ACC is. While the conference is getting better, this year aside, it has only won 44% of those non-conference games.

Now cower in shame for yelling, or Nancy Pelosi will shoot you an icy stare.

Hey, maybe Urban Meyer should do Tim Tebow a favor and bring the Gators to the 'Yankee Stadium Bowl' this season. That way, if Tebow wants to continue his professional career as a QB, he can start getting used to playing 'up north'.

Perhaps Urban can also petition the bowl to be played with three downs, everyone in motion at the snap, and 150 yards of field too...so Tim can get used to that as well. ;)

Sandra
S
You left out the MAC conference in several places in this post ....

I appoligize to all my midwestern friends. The MAC certainly is another mid-major which can be mentioned in the same breath as the woefull and undeserving to be in the BcS Leastleftovers. For that matter so is the Sun Belt.

As to the comments about urban and rural and northeast and rest of the country relative to college sports, EXACTLY. College football in a state w/o pro sports, or to the "native" population in a state that has filled up with "outsiders" to the point that it now has pro sports is so totally different from people who watch "fair Harvard" or who give 3 seconds of notice to Rutgers when they actually win a few that it is unbelievable. It is a different level and the broken BcS includes this to try to make a claim to the northeastern market. It is just not right and is a tone deaf move.

Mexico takes on South Africa to open the World Cup Final (it is called the Final... this just isn't the World Cup Final... Final). The tournament has been plagued with rife malfeasance as FIFA has been committing all sorts of fraud with the ticket sales. Hotel rooms have gone unfilled as the prices to attend a game and stay somewhere are through the roof. I swear this is impacting Mansfield, OH hotel rates which are higher than average for the Indycar race. And there is a broadening VAR presence which will ruin things as nothing worse now when scoring a goal and knowing you can't quite celebrate yet as they check to see if a player was offside by a pixel a half-hour ago.

The Group Stage used to mean something, but now 32 of the 48... yeah, 48 teams are going to the Knockout Round. Getting into the Knockout Round used to be a big deal, even for the US. But now... if you don't lose all of your group stage games, you get to move on. Oi! And this is avoiding all the political stuff!

I have never been so unexcited for a World Cup before. Every game used to matter. But FIFA be darned if they don't try to squeeze out every dime they can out of the players, refs, and fans.

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

Comcast Corporation, one of the largest telecommunications and media conglomerates in the United States, has shed more than 13 million pay-TV subscribers since reaching its zenith in the late 2000s. The company's video subscriber base, which includes traditional cable television services, stood at approximately 24.2 million customers toward the end of 2008. By the close of the first quarter of 2026, that figure had plummeted to roughly10.95 million, representing a loss of about 13.25 million subscribers, or more than half of its historical peak.

The average monthly cost of cable television in the United States has climbed to $147, marking a significant increase that reflects broader trends in media consumption and rising operational expenses for providers. This figure represents the baseline expense for standard television packages across major cable operators, excluding additional fees for premium channels, equipment rentals, or taxes that often push household bills even higher.

This is without Broadband services ( bundled), also, paying a lot more for a lot less new scripted content and now….sports.

Anyone know how Canadians are doing with cord cutting? I would think there could be added incentive simply in that Canadian cable/sat has been heavily regulated to exclude much of US content in order to promote home content. Streaming would seem to cut through any of that, presuming there aren't restrictions on that as well. Or maybe US streamers won't sell there?

Some of the most popular streaming apps, like YTTV, Netflix, Hulu, and others, are geo locked to at least one country, if not even tighter. There are ways around that for the technically inclined.

Usually softball is the first suggestion YTTV puts up when she clicks the tile though, so it works well enough for her.

Wasn't there a law passed a long time back mandating service providers level the sound from one ch. to the next? Or was that just for within any single given ch., and not letting commercials be boosted? Regardless it's a pain on DiSH with some ch's way louder than others, and having to jockey the sound up & down. Is there some fix? Can some TVs compensate for this?

depend on how you tv and box is setup? as both have "audio" leveling

for me if I have audio leveling on hopper enabled DD is lower then Stereo if i turn off on h3 turn on tv it the reverse. Almost ALL streaming channels much lower volume level then statalite channels.

Either way one my pet peaves is that even channel seem to have it own "audio level" and so to commericals and none of the actual audio leveling functions actual fix this and never have. would be nice if every channel dish/dtv/fios etc all made volume level defualt to same dB so atlest all channel where consistent volume probably wont help commercials though.

To my knowledge no TV has ever had audio leveling function that actual fixed that all it really does it either lower or raise the volume

Most stuff has all this volume leveling, almost all them dont work the way should or advertised as. maybe "ai" versions of volume level will work closer to way we would like to which make all channels and inputs same defualt sound level, including commercials

There is reason my entire mp3/audio music collection on my pc was changed to have same defualt "dB" for all files via something like MP3Gain so there all same defualt volume level and there for I never have to play around with my volume. I know Winamp could change dB defualts but never worked as good as just manual changing all the audio/mp3/music collection files to just be all the same

But doesn't music require a lot of dynamic range? At least classical & the like? So there has to be allowance for some highs without attenuation, and some lows without boosting. It seems there needs to be some kind of a universal median level that all sources can register to, that still allows for both soft and loud intermittently. My dad always had westerns on and the gunshots really rang out

That's a fundamental issue with volume levels - it's not just that people want some "level" but that the material itself can demand (or at least so says the creator) a wide dynamic range or a smaller one. ie: do you boost the typical conversations upward and use most of your range just for voices? Or do you leave room for the explosions and jet engines. Creators and viewer/listeners all vary in their priorities, and most volume-leveling products are trying to do things in real time so they have very little context to work with. Even when using a tool that reads a whole file and displays a peak volume, you can wonder how often such a volume occurs and then you can disagree on how important it is for something like an explosion to have any clipping/distortion.

I think the OP refers to the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act, AKA the CALM act. But as the name suggests, I think it only has to do with commercials and not different sources.

By the way, if you watch westerns with realistic gunshot sound levels, I recommend hearing protection. :)
T
I will say this on PC it worse one game is one volume level by defualt another is super quiet and another deafening loud, and volume leveling dont equalize it. The dynamic range isnt the problem the defualt volume is not same from channel to channel, commercial to commercial game to game.

To mean volume leveling is defeat volume level from source to source channel to channel, commercial to commercial, game to game.

Default volume level of 89.9 dB across the board fixes that tv providers can easily do this from there end and mandate commercial creators follow it, but it wont ever happen

Maybe volume leveling means somthing else to other people

This only if anything seems to be worsening on DiSH. Ch. 215 is a prime example. It's typically much louder than other ch's, and today I notice it even contradicting itself, shifting drastically up and down inexplicably over periods of several minutes. Oddly, the quietest periods have come during commercials...

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Did anyone have a price increase today on their equipment? I own my VIP211k's, and they have been $5.00. My bill that I received last week shows the "add-ons" as being $5.00. However, I just logged into my Dish account, and my "add-ons" are now $10.00. Did the additional receivers go up by $5.00 recently?

As I mentioned, my last bill shows $5.00 and under the notes, nothing is mentioned about a price increase.

I went to try to add the Heartland channel as dummy to see what it would do for me as I own my receiver and have DISH Outdoors and this is what mine shows. (Note however I had to take the 2nd receiver I told you I added the other day off because I was told you can only have 1 receiver when you have a one outlet on the Dish Playmaker and was having issues with the 2nd receiver and I didn't know that and that was done yesterday as well so I am back to one receiver.)

Let's upgrade your package.

I asked again, and the rep I talked to said it is a glitch and that "Access for TV" shouldn't be there - the rep pulled up my future month bills and that charge isn't on it. So I am not going to worry about it right now, but it will be interesting to see when the price changes happen later this year. Will this line item show up? The fact that it is a specific item that is different from anything makes me think it is more than a glitch. But we shall see.

I am hoping they don't add this down the road. Things are expensive the way it is now. Even DIRECTV allows the first receiver free. This would go against DISH and DISH is already loosing subscribers I wouldn't think they would do these kind of tricks but you never know. Always look at your bills for unknow charges. I heard horror stories of people getting charged for things they didn't know were there.

I feel like this was discussed in another thread, but I can't find it. I have T-Mobile and my last iPhone upgrade was in 2020. I want to get a new iPhone, but what is the best way to go about doing it? Should I order the iPhone from T-Mobile directly, or should I buy from the Apple Store? I feel like there are pros/cons to each option.

Hello everyone, new guy here. I'm trying to solve problem I'm having with Dish bonus view channels. When I'm watching the bonus view channels then I switch back to regular dish channels, after few minutes the screen flips to black and after 30 seconds flips back to regular channels and continues to flip back and forth until I turn off TV. After I wait 30 minutes and turn back on , I can use regular channels again. So, its after I switch from bonus view channels to regular dish channels the problem starts. Been trying to fix this for a month, but no luck
Here what I've done.
i contacted Dish support and they sent me a new Joey3, but no help. Switched to a different HDMI input on TV, no help. Used different HDMI cable , no help. Used different electrical wall plug, no help.
Finally got a Dish tech to check it. He ran all systems check and was OK. Finally he brought in a small TV and plugged in the HDMI out from the Joey to the small TV. He could not get the problem to occur on his small TV, so the new Joey was working OK. So, then the problem must be myTV. He made some phone calls and came back with the answer that there must be a problem with the analog to digital switch in my TV. Has anyone ever heard of a problem like this, or is it time to be looking for a new TV? My tv LG OLED65C8PUA. TV has been trouble free til now. Thanks

First off, great TV. I'm torn between the 77C5 or the 77G5.
It sounds like the handshake between the Receiver and the TV is having a problem. Are you using the free cable that came with the Joey or a higher speed HDMI cable?? That's the f irst place I'd look

First off, The analog to digital switch, also known as the digital television transition, is the process of converting older analog television broadcasting technology to digital broadcasting. It's used through coaxial cable for the an antenna during the mandatory switch from Analog to Digital on June 12, 2009. You either had to get a converter for your analog (Tube TV) or use a converter box that has the analog or digital tuner or an HDTV which your is and has the tuner built in. Your TV is HD and using an HDMI Cable and nothing is connected by coaxial cable so this wouldn't apply.

In my theory it probably means a new TV. I had a TV go out on my switching between the Smart Screen from the HDMI inputs before because they went faulty. Sometimes electrical surges can cause this. If you have an older home or rent an older home or apartment sometimes the electrical outlets are not grounded and these days HDTV's need a ground which can cause them to malfunction and go bad quicker. Never plug it directly in an outlet. It will damage the TV.

Hope I could be of some assistance.
