I am in very good area for AMC4 (101) (EIRP of at least 50) so am able to get very good signal quality on all FTA channels. This is with an LNB which is six degrees off centre on a 60e dish. The lowest is 45 (threshold on a Pansat is usually around 30 for most channels) and a lot are quite a bit higher. Recently one scrambled channel became ITC (S*t*nt*) which I really want. Naturally, for some reason (probably because I really want it), it has the worst signal quality (10-19 usually) with major pixelation and is totally unwatchable. Only once since the channel became ITC has it hit the 30 mark.

I did try peaking the LNB on it, but with little success, and what little I gained (may be a point or two) I gave back up as it caused loss on the other transponders.

On Tuesday I was out and was going to do another attempt at a minor tweak. Anyhow, I was basically just experimenting to see if I was getting interference from another satellite and could somehow block it. So I grabbed a wooden paint stir stick which was lying on the ground and placed it beside the LNB and tilted it inward. Imagine my total surprise (and great delight) when the signal went up, and not just a bit, but up to a stable 27-30! Take the stick away, and back down to 15-19. So I temporarily installed a plastic lid in place until I had time last night to manufacture something more stable and lasting (and not so funny looking as the plastic lid).

The photos below of the "blinder", as I call it, are the finished project, and my signal has been without any pixelation and has been stable at 28-33 since I mounted it. There has been no loss at all on any other channel (and in fact transponder 11860 also seems to have gained a bit) which is surprising to me, since the edge of blinder projects across a portion of the LNB face.

Definitely well worth the effort to experiment!

I've had to re-position my Wi-Fi router in the past because it was interfering with the satellite reception (2.4GHz). Maybe someone has one nearby that you are able to block with your "filter"?
In my situation it caused interference with C band reception, couldn't pick up one satellite at all after I installed the router (think it was AMC-1). Made it easy to trace the problem. Must be poor filtering in the router's transmitter output or the signal gets into the IF at the satellite receiver or LNB. I also switched to a directional grid antenna for the router directed away from the dish(s) but just moving the router made the difference.

Thanks for the information, I hadn't thought of that. While our network is wired, so it can't be the problem, it it possible it could be one of the neighbour's (my son's computer detects 6 wireless networks).

Anyhow, tomorrow I am going to see if I can determine where the interference is coming from (earth based or satellite) by trying to block the interferring signal a few feet from the dish using a metal snow shovel (have used this before to determine placement of other dishes so as not to interfere with each other). The neighbours' already think I'm crazy (from this satellite "hobby") so waving a snow shovel around in front of a dish will only be further confirmation in their minds!

That's pretty good. My neighbors think Im nut's till I tell them everything I get and the low low cost I spend on my subscription channels. Then there like WOW :D

Lucky for you with your 4DTV! Unfortunately, with the loss of the Equity channels, FTA is an even harder sell for people to understand (and I think the fact that I can be out late at night and in the winter "playing" with my dishes has tainted their views)!

This reminds me of LoTech. He came up with a Styrene cup to reduce interference between RTV and LEO 1.

Consider your device may be working not to block but to ever so slightly changing the L.O. of the lnbf like a dielectric plate.

Correction: Dielectric inserts do not modify the Local Oscillation frequency. Dielectric inserts mechanically limit the reception to a specific signal phase.

The blinder maybe attenuating interference from either terrestrial or adjacent satellite.

Ya FTA is a hobby thing for the most part. I sold a client on the DSR 410 idea last summer and he's saving $50.00 a month now over Comcast. My neighbor pays $245.00 a month for Comcast :eek: I spend about $20.00 with the 4D. :D Comcast want's for basic by me with the local HD channels $139.00 a month. Thats crazy.... Thats Extortion.

Spent some time outside (great weather today, going back out after this post) trying to determine where the interference is coming from.

Using a variety of objects (metal snow shovel, plexiglass, wooden board, myself!) I was able to determine it is not earth based either from underneath, either side, back, or front, when checking below where satellite signals hit the dish.

When attempting to block out signals to the east of AMC4, it did appear to have some effect, however, due to the width of the beams that hit the dish as opposed to the focused signals at the LNB, it was not possible to duplicate the excellent results achieved by the blinder.

Back out to the lawn chair, and a well deserved rest!

Wasn't exactly sure where to post this. Just had a customer come in inquiring about internet. He has HughesNet and had heard good things about mine. He asked if we provided email addresses and it kinda caught me off guard. I said he should be able to keep whatever email he had been using....my sister in law is still using a BellSouth email addy and they haven't been around here for many years. He said he had gotten a letter from HughesNet stating that they had until Nov 16th to save, move, forward, whatever, their Hughesnet emails because they would lose them after that date.

I have never heard of a company simply mass-deleting email accounts (the customer still has his HughesNet service). From what I understand, in the past, the company who was ditching their email service simply sold the customer base to a company like Google.

Anyone else getting this letter. He said he would show it to me tomorrow when I go out there and set up his internet.

Doing a Google of the HughesNet Email notice, it seems that HughesNet has been trying to eliminate hosting emails since 2019. And with HughesNet filing Chapter 11 back in August, it would be a smart move to switch to a more stable Email provider. Even AT&T farmed out their Email to Yahoo! years ago.

SpaceX's Starlink and the Cellular 5G Home Internet solutions have pretty much relegated HughesNet and its high latency, low bandwidth Internet service to History. If Earth had shorter days, maybe a Geostationary Internet Solution might have stood a fighting chance…

Well, I helped him set up a gmail acct....I actually wanted to see what the new process is for setting up a gmail acct since it had been years since I set mine up. Anyway, I showed him how to forward the emails he wanted to keep over.

Wouldn't we then die of old age sooner?

Can't help but wonder if a worker overlooked checking the harness. I rarely ride a roller coaster anymore but when I do I check the harness myself pretty aggressively.
Can't imagine what the son is going through.

Back on the Goliath Roller Coaster ... I'm interested to find more details as well ...
Like where on the track did this happen (somewhere I read that it was on the climb up the top), which is impossible ...

They really need to take that ride and add at the very least, seatbelts ...

The Park is opening back up on Friday, the ride will Not be opening ... personally, I would keep it closed until different type of restraints can be designed and installed (over the winter).

I find it hard to believe that this ride is even allowed to be running with the restraints that exist at the moment, there are other rides that use the same type and they have been shut down across the country.

You got to believe that every ride has at least 2 types of restraint systems in place.

I wonder what and when we will hear from the Manufacturer ... and whatever governing bodies control these ...

Just think, this is a Major Amusement Park .... I would not have any problem getting on the Roller Coasters I have rode ...

Imagine what these County Fairs and others like them, I would not be caught Dead on one of them ... they get put up and tore down every other week, where is the safety for those rides ... No Thank You.

Yet IF you were on one, you might be caught dead.

Had no idea there were that many redundancies built into those restraints.

It makes sense, however, I would want more types of restraints, so if one doesn't work, the other does ... the restraints coming over the shoulder I would have expected ... with a Seat belt as last resort.

Fwiw, I inquired with what they use on Coasters at Cedar Point, various Coasters, different restraints according to what the car and track requires ...

NONE of the Coasters at CP use THAT particular system :)
I'm glad to see ...

According to the article, when you see a seat belt on a ride like this, it is basically used as a way of making sure the rider isn't too large/fat to safely ride the ride.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Scott, I was having major issues getting connected around noon ET. Looks fine now. I captured a Safari session that was showing high CPU utilization in the Rendering of the page, like 90+%. I have a JSON file I created that I could share.

Been using the site at that time and saw no issues. A quick look at the logs shows nothing strange.
Foxbat
Yeah. It's probably something going on with the MacBook as my iPhone has been pretty snappy.

I just received 6 receiver 2 port mini Multiswitch and it work great, no external power need it, and you can connect 6 receiver instead of 4 on most Mini Multiswitches... If anyone is interested in where they can get one PM me....

Have you tested using external power? Over the years, have found unpowered polarity switching to be unreliable. Especially problematic when used with DiSEqC motors or switch stacking.
H
No I have not. I just got it the other day and it is connected to six receivers working just fine. What I do is non power mini multi-switches work best with LNBF's and with LNB's

Was Gibbs still there when you quit watching ?
If so, A Lot has happened ....

It's been pretty good all along , once you get use to Gibbs being gone.

You don't like Tony, or Tony as the Director (he's only been there for 30 seconds now) or you don't like NCIS ?

I bought the fixed color version of these bulbs for my store several years ago...work great and no more replacing ballast. Finally had one go out and when I went back to Amazon I saw that now they come in selectable versions so no more guess work as to what color light would do best in a certain area. They are now double OR single ended...used to be strictly one way or the other. If any of you are looking at replacing the old style 4 or 8 ft bulbs, you might want to give these a try. The 8 footers are BRIGHT. I put 5 in my shooting/target shed and you can get a decent tan if you are in there long enough.

When we re-lamped my in-Laws' house for sale last year, we were able to get all the Edison bulbs and a few fixtures with switch-selectable Color Temperature. We tried a few and settled on 3000°K as the best fit for the house. Matching the lighting in all the rooms made for an inviting experience. The Shop was the only place that we went with 4000°K for the LED 4' fixtures.

The house was sold within a month of going on the market, so we must have done something right.

The other advantage is if the new owners decide that they prefer a warmer light, they can unscrew the bulbs (I think it was close to 70 bulbs) and set them to the 2500K/2700K settings.

I'll have to check these out. Thanks!
