I'm currently a cable subscriber and considering moving to satellite. I just finished looking over the dish network programming line-up for their standard packages and frankly I'm not impressed. If I counted correctly 33 of the 120 channels in the CLASSIC BRONZE 100 PLUS package are radio stations, 20 are sports alternative (whatever that is), there are an additional 30 sports themed channels with themes like sports south, north Ohio sports, etc. and 12 religious themed channels.

I'm not interested in paying to listen to radio stations on TV. I have a lifetime subscription Sirius radio so I don't need to pay for TV radio. I like some sports, but I'm not interested in paying for 50 channels of sports. Maybe some people like that and I have no problem if that is their interest, but it's not mine. Some people like the religious channels - I don't watch them and don't want to pay for them.

The real point is that all TV providers (that I know of) are taking a one-size-fits-all approach to TV programming. The attitude is - here's my 100 channel line-up take it or leave it, if you don't like that here's 250 channels for you take it or leave it. I predict that some day one will be able to pick and choose the channels one wants to watch and is willing to pay for - Would I pay to watch the home shopping network - not on your life. Would I pay to watch CNN yup, how about A&E - yes, so long as their programming remained good. How about the cartoon network - only if I had kids in the house - which I don't.

The cost structure should be such that subscribers only pay for the channels they want to receive, CNN $1/month; cartoon network $.30/month, Home shopping network - they pay you $.20/month, you get the idea. The more popular a network becomes the more money it can charge and the more money it makes. I think this sort of structure will happen some day.

Try ESPN $10/month, CNN $5.00/month, Cartoon Net $3.00/month, etc. You're fooling yourself if you think it will be cheaper. That will all add up pretty quick......

I do have a question for you. If you're not impressed with Dish's' lineup, how does your cable lineup compare, channel and price-wise? There must be a reason you have a wandering eye....

It's both cost and quality. The programming is OK, but I'm paying too much and having intermittent problems with the HD channels and Mediacom can't resolve the problem.

Actually your prediction already came true. And pretty much failed.. In the days of the big Dish this was how a lot of people got programming.. It worked for the most part. But how many big dishes do you see today.. Not many. Still a few die hards, but most moved on to the small dish and accepted the price they must pay for TV..

I thought Voyage was decent (for the first two seasons). The rest, not so much. All other shows were pretty lame, IMO. Especially Land of the Giants.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Love this guy's channel. Looks like Walmart has thrown in the towel when it comes to conventional car batteries.

I bought a new AGM battery from Walmart about a year ago, it is already needing replacing. I thought about just buying a regular battery but from what I've read, that might not be a smart move. Might check my Forscan program and see if I can change the battery type from AGM.

When you need a battery, you need a battery.

If you can wait, new technologies are on the not-too-distant horizon.

You're probably doing something wrong if you're only getting a year out of an AGM battery. Heat and infrequent charging both significantly reduce lifetime.

Now right up front....this is NOT intended to devolve into a "pot is good" vs "pot is bad" thread. The whole point is to make you aware of a potential problem that a person can develop when they start smoking pot at a young age. Not that they WILL, but CAN. Kinda like getting lung cancer from smoking cigs....some do, some don't. The purpose of posting this news story is to keep anyone from paying an outrageous emergency room bill......knowledge is power.
While this may not affect you, you might run into someone who is experiencing these symptoms and can share the info. Fortunately, it looks like stopping smoking is the cure and isn't a permanent condition.

Season 2 order already in hand:

'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Renewed for Season 2, Tatiana Maslany to Guest Star in Season 1

I've not been optimistic about this show based on what I've read so far. Seems to be aimed at a younger audience. Interesting though that Tatiana Maslany will have some sort of role.

Here i am over a year later and just finished season 1. Not great but not as bad as I was expecting. Did not care for the barefoot captain stuff but overall ok. Actually looking forward to see what they did for season 2.

Yeah, the foot stuff was just nasty. I kept thinking of how dirty her feet would get traipsing around shoe-less. Funny, I love being shoe less at home and never wear shoes indoors in my home for long, but seeing her laying on all her furniture with her bare feet hanging out just kind of grossed me out.

There would still be dirt ,dust in the future I am sure. So walking around the station like she did she would get stuff on her feet. I am sure the robot vacuum is still going to miss stuff, with all those different alien species running around there.

Why do you think cleaning technology won't improve in the next few hundred years? HEPA filtration was invented as part of the Manhattan Project.

I don't know, but I still don't like her walking through the station or the academy with out her shoes. It looks unprofessional and very "hippy like" for someone of her status and I personally don't get off to feet, so there is that. ;)

I set up a music server for my brother a few years ago. It's basically a small headless computer but it needs to have a DHCP IP address reserved for it in the router settings. This was easy to do in his DSL router. He's switching to Starlink now and I was wondering if these setting are easily accessible in the Starlink router. I'm pretty sure he will be getting the latest V5 router.

If you can't get into the router to reserve an IP address just don't use DHCP on the device that needs connected and assign it to a specific IP address in the network settings.

They are not. Your best bet is to set up a third-party router, attached to the Starlink for your server, that you can get into, like a Linksys, etc

The Starlink V5 Install Kit I just got comes with the Mini Router. It is pretty limited in what it can do. For example, it can provide only one IP subnet at a time, no Guest Network, but it does support the pass-thru to a third-party Router. You can also split the Wi-Fi into separate 5 GHz & 2.4 GHz SSIDs to help some IoT devices that don't support 5 GHz bands to work.

The larger Starlink Router that still comes with the V4 Kit does support a Guest Network with separate IPv4 Subnet, but it's $120 from Starlink. And it still won't do DHCP Reservations.
harshness
If you can restrict the DHCP address space to assign addresses to one end of the subnet (i.e. x.x.x.50+), you can manually assign the IP address on pretty much any operating system. This is a default behavior on several popular routers. As the Router Mini only supports 235 devices, I expect that's already done.

Another option is to use a router that supports PoE to power the antenna. This article discusses that option (under PoE Power heading):

Well, the season finale went balls to the wall. Non stop action and several twisted twists. Gary Oldman at his best. Very well written and executed. Tavener owes Jackson big time. Only "if" was Jack Lowden's (River) cliffhanger, especially admin-st the buzz that he is the next James Bond in waiting.

Hear, hear! Flyte was probably the most competent character in the show. We were also sad to see Coe come up short against the Russian operative.

Still some uncertainty about the last five minutes. The line from Lamb about "faking one's death" gives us something to think about until the next season.
