I am a newbie to FTA, but I have researched many posts and read all the FAQ's I could find to keep the following questions from being too naïve, so thanks in advance for your patience. At the moment, I am only concerned with getting the infrastructure setup and want to make sure I have that right in my head before proceeding with anything further. I'm a little new to the terminology but have used it where possible for the sake of the experts. Again, thanks!
1. I have a D* Slimline AU9S-SL5-S (no additional diplexers, splitters, etc). I am not a D* subscriber and I am currently only interested in using this dish for FTA on one TV only (for the moment). I know it has some powerful HD and multiple tuner features that I might subscribe to in the future. Since this dish/LNB combo is both Ka & Ku equipped (Ku 101, 110, 119), my understanding is that I would not need to make any mods or alterations to the dish and can use as-is to receive FTA over the Ku band. Is this correct?
2. I have a detailed FAQ on using the D* Phase III – 3 LNB dish for FTA (just for reference) and have read that re-pointing the dish may be required to get FTA signal. I don't know that the Phase III FAQ would even apply to the AU9S, so my question is, if I was to keep the dish aligned for a normal D* setup, i.e. no change to tilt, elevation, skew, etc., could I expect to pick up FTA birds, and which ones? Eg. EchoStar 8,10 @ 110, EchoStar 7 @ 119.
3. Because this is a 5 LNB (but really a 3 LNB for my purposes), would I also receive Intelsat 5 @ 82/91 or others like Telstar 5 or Galaxy 10R without having to make any mods to the dish or alignment?
4. An AU9S feature according to the spec sheet is that it is "Integrated for HD Local Reception". Does this mean that it would act like an ordinary digital antenna and receive local broadcast network signals like ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, WTTW, etc without any additional equipment or mods?
5. Do I need to use the PI-21 power supply to power the SL5-S SWM LNB for FTA reception? Is an equivalent power supply built into FTA receivers such that an external power supply is not needed?
6. Assuming proper alignment and signal has been verified at the dish, aside from the FTA receiver and RG6 cable itself, what other equipment would I need in the form of diplexers, splitters? Based on what I think I know, the connection for a single TV should be as follows: AU9S to 8 Channel SWM Multi-Switch to Power Supply to FTA receiver.
7. The FTA receiver would plug into the IRD side of the power supply and the SWM side of the power supply would plug into either the SWM1/2 outputs on the 8 Channel SWM?
8. Is there an alternative to the 8 Channel SWM Multi-Switch I could use for this setup?
9. Does anyone have a diagram of this type of setup that they can share?
10. Can you recommend a particular FTA receiver that would work best for my application?

Welcome to Satelliteguys!

I'm moving this to our FTA area to get you some better responses.

I went through and removed all the responses form the other sites and fixed the font so we can read it :)

now onto the post

The slimline can see 99/101/103/110/119 but unfortunately the LNB's are pretty much useless for free to air. Here is why

99 & 103 are KA Band...free to air is KU Band
101/110 & 119 are DBS which would work for a few freebie channels up there. The issue is 110 & 119 are set up differently (only uses part of the frequencies). So the only LNB that is of any use for FTA is 101 LNB but you'd have to reaim the dish

Eg. EchoStar 8,10 @ 110, EchoStar 7 @ 119.
no that wont work. 110 & 119 are setup differently in the Phase III. 110 only uses 3 transponders and it combines the 11 transponders that Directv uses on 119 together. The only LNB that works is 101

3. Because this is a 5 LNB (but really a 3 LNB for my purposes), would I also receive Intelsat 5 @ 82/91 or others like Telstar 5 or Galaxy 10R without having to make any mods to the dish or alignment?
you would have ot switch the LNB and mod something. Also it would need to be reaimed

4. An AU9S feature according to the spec sheet is that it is "Integrated for HD Local Reception". Does this mean that it would act like an ordinary digital antenna and receive local broadcast network signals like ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, WTTW, etc without any additional equipment or mods?
no. It can receive HD locals via DIrectv

The rest I'm going to not answer because it doesnt pertain to the situation. In all seriousness, unless you modify the LNB setup and put a KU Band LNB on there, the slimline (AU9) is useless for free to air. The best thing to do is to get a 30" to 36" dish and start fresh :)
J
Thanks for taking the time to help me understand 'why' that dish will not work. My gut tells me to just abandon this dish, as you suggest. But just one quick question before moving on, 30" to 36" dish size seems to be the magic number for FTA, and the AUS is 22.5 in. x 32.5 in. First, does the dish have to be a circular version, i.e. 30" to 36"' for any given measurement? And, 'IF' (and I do mean if) I was to entertain replacing the LNB with a Ku Band, would this be as simple as just replacing it, or based on your experience do you suspect some other customizations to the dish would be needed to get it to work correctly that would just make it not worth the effort? By customizations I mean shortening or lengthening the LNB arm for proper focus or rotation of the LNB to favor the 32.5" span of the dish, etc.
Thanks!
Tron
There have been a couple of members who have modified Slimlines for FTA. This involves removing the entire original LNB assembly and using something like a conduit clamp at the end of the arm to hold a standard Ku-Band LNB. Its a fun little project, but not the best way to receive Ku-Band signals. While the Slimline is wide enough, it is undersized vertically, so its a bit weak compared with a larger dish. Dish Network Superdishes, which are about the same size, will work without modification (with similar results).
J
Thank you to all for the great feedback. For now, I think I am just going to look into a new dish entirely, but hold on to the one I have just in case I might be able to use it in some fashion down the road when I get more experienced with FTA.

Now that I'm retired, obviously I have different health care insurance. I take 2 prescriptions. With my old insurance I didn't have to pay for either of them, now I do. It's not a huge amount but it led me to dig a little into the cost of prescription medications. I have been using Walgreens for the longest time. But what I found was that Walgreens price is 4.8 times more for one of my prescriptions and the other is 2.3 percent more compared to the lowest price pharmacy. If you pay for prescription medications you might want to have a look at trumprx and see if you can get a lower price.

I run them through several different providers to see who has the lowest cost

Usually it's Walmart or Sam's + GoodRx

Also...

You can also price them through the CareCard and WellRx apps.

Sometimes Amazon Pharmacy is cheapest.

My OTA is not working anymore. This started after the latest update. I have the OTA dongle with a OTA antenna that I've been using for years. My hopper does not recognize the dongle anymore and when I go to the OTA setting, it has a screen that says to plug a dongle into the USB. I tried unplugging and plugging back, in the same usb port and other ports. The Hopper does not recognize it. Anyone have same issue?

No updates but if you can get DISH Technical Operations to roll you back to H710 or earlier even though H708 would be best because it also eliminates another problem like in this comment, you will also no longer have the problem as long as you don't update manually or forced to any new version until the problem is fixed as the problem started in H711 and still exist in H712 and H713.

Installed an off-air antenna a couple days ago for a customer who had just cancelled his Dish service. He had a dual off-air adapter and gave it to me. Cool. I'll keep it on the truck....might come in handy. Got to admit I don't watch anything as far as live tv goes anymore. Even if we have severe weather, our local channels will have a live feed on Youtube.

In other news, it was announced that the software fix for the two tin cans and a string will not be forthcoming. A hardware fix is required. However, that fix will let you receive stations from a gazillion miles away.

Truck roll charges may apply. Two year commitment required.

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

I was reading this article

That said this-
Last summer, for the first time, streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime claimed the largest share of the television viewing audience, surpassing both cable and broadcast TV. Streaming captured 34.8 percent of July viewers, according to Nielsen data, compared to 34.4 percent for cable and 21.6 percent for broadcast.

And then, sometime in the second half of 2022, cord-cutters became the majority. The share of cable and satellite television subscribers dipped to 48 percent, according to a report from Samba TV, a television technology company.

Now I do not consider those with YTTV and the likes, Cord Cutters, but they still do not have Traditional Cable/Satellite delivered Live TV, so I decided to do the math.

There are, now, 129 Million Households in the United States.

In 2015, there were 100 Million Cable/Sat Subscribers , no streaming Live TV Service.

Today, there are 66 Million Live TV subscribers, including Cable, Satellite and Streaming.

Roughly, Streaming Live TV has 14 Million subs including all of them.

So that means, Cable/Satellite now has, roughly, 51 Million Households

So in just 8 years, lost 49% of their subscribers and by the end of this year, expected sub count to be, roughly, 45 million households.

That means a total loss of 55% since 2015 at the end of 2023.

But out of 129 Million households, 45 million will mean only 35% will get Cable/Satellite Delivered Live TV by the end of 2023.

Imagine what 2024 will be like.

Even a physical disc purchase is considered a license, just extremely harder to pull access vs digital.

But once new players are no longer sold and older players quit working, that takes care of the access to your library.

See LaserDiscs for one example of that happening.

It's dead, they just don't know it yet. They killed it by forcing DRM on it, and that TOTALLY botched implementing it.

There is absolutely NO compelling reason for anybody to switch to ATSC3.0. They only want it as a total and complete money grab.

What bothers me is the total waste of broadcasting spectrum in this very crowded market. It has been almost three years now since KFOX converted their broadcast tower to ATSC 3.0 and moved all of their channels to other towers causing noticeable degradation of the picture quality.
I have a Sony TV with 3.0 capabilities but still use the 1.0 version of locals due to the fact that one or all of the 3.0 channels are often missing or unwatchable. In this city of 800K I doubt that more than a few hundred even know about ATSC 3.0.
The only thing that could motivate me to be interested in 3.0 would be if all of the minor networks (diginets) could be in at least 720P rather than blurry ultra-compressed 480i.
Three years is long enough to waste one of the few available RF frequencies in the area for this trial.
It is time to either move on with this experiment or call it quits.
