I'm new here (I joined when I started to look into upgrading my Directv to HD). Just thought I'd share my experiences with Directv customer 'service' when trying to get my R22-100 upgraded to HD. I ended up sending a 7 page 'snail mail' letter to the President and CEO over the experience. But I have a feeling he gets lots of those, so mine probably won't be noticed. I'm not going to include the 7 page letter here, but below is the note I sent to their customer advocate, which pretty well sums up the ordeal. Following this, I received an email from a woman named Cimmaron who sent me a couple of B-Band Converter modules to try. They didn't work. The clincher was when I called back and tried to talk to her - I was told she wasn't there and the guy on the phone insisted on 'helping' me. After explaining all I had gone through, the guy says - But, sir, the R22-100 can't be upgraded. Closest I've come to screaming at someone on the phone in a LONG time. But I remained calm and told him that, if he wanted me to stay with Directv, he would send me a new HD DVR at Directv's expense, which he agreed to do. Here is the note to the customer advocate... I recently decided to purchase an HDTV. I have been a Directv subscriber for close to 15 years, so I called your customer service number to inquire about upgrading my Directv service to HD. One of the main questions I had was whether my existing R22-100 DVR could be upgraded to HD - it has the resolution settings button on the front, so I assumed it could be. This is especially important because we have many hours of recordings we don't want to lose by going to a new HD DVR. I was assured it could be upgraded. Based on that, and the fact that Directv would install the new dish and supply a new HD DVR for our bedroom TV at no charge, I decided to proceed with the upgrade of my Directv service, as opposed to moving to HD service from our local cable provider. The installation went very nicely and the new HD DVR works perfectly. On May 24, I sent an email to your customer service department (I REALLY don't like your phone system) requesting that the existing DVR be upgraded. Thus began a never-ending series of emails, basically telling me different things to try (I will be more than happy to forward to you the email 'chain'). I have tried everything they have suggested and I still cannot get the HD channels - they will not show up in the guide no matter the settings I have tried, as they suggested, nor does the 'HD Channels' category show up when I hit the guide button twice, as it does on my new HD DVR.The email I received today basically says they are giving up and referring me to your forums. To say I am disappointed would be a major understatement. In my last email I asked that a tech support person call me at home last night, which was not done. And, by the way, I HAVE checked the forums and there are lots of entries saying this receiver can, in fact, be upgraded. This is not the level of service I expect from Directv. If I wanted this level of service, I could have gone with my local cable provider. I'm about ready to give them a try.

The R22 can have HD sent through it only if you have another HD receiver on the account. I have just a R22 myself and it cannot be turned on as a HD receiver.

Do you have another HD receiver on the account?

Although I swore I wasn't going to return to this forum, I'm visiting long enough to say that I got the HD working on the R22-100. I figured it out on my own, since Directv was useless. It finally occurred to me that the R22-100 satellite configuration had not been changed - it still showed the round dish as it was before the new slimline HD dish was installed. I changed it to the slimline, for which it said the B-Band Converters were required, which Directv had sent me, but, again, they said nothing about reconfiguring the dish. I now get all the HD channels. Absolutely no one at Directv even mentioned this as a possibility. Nor did the installer mention it, even though I told him I was planning on upgrading the R22-100 for HD. At the very least, he could have changed the satellite dish type, or told me to do it. The sad thing about all this is that as bad as the 'service' I received from Directv was on this issue, cable is even worse, and DISH is on a list by itself.

was this the main recvr that he was working on ?
If so , I would have thought that it wouldn't work if the sat configuration was not correct.

You would never get the HD channels if you didn't have the BBC's on at the time.
Yopu'd get a few,but most are on the 99 and 103 sats that require the BBC's.

The new one they installed as part of the upgrade is an HR23-700. If it has BBCs on it, they are internal to the unit. Directv can't decide whether they installed a SWiM dish or not (don't even get me started on that...), if that makes a difference.

Yiu are correct, the HR23 is the only DVR that has the BBC's built in to them.

If you look in your Sat set up info it will tell you what LNB set up your using.

Sir I did apologize to you since I had a bad day that day like we all do from time to time.

I am here to help you may not like my answers but I always tell it how it is.

You got caught up on what the box can physically do. it had the components inside to display resolutions higher then SD even though it was marked as a SD DVR.

My daily driver ( 08 Jeep Compass ) here 2.4L World engine does 172hp stock but I know techincally she can do 337HP stock in a slightly difference configuration that is used by Chrysler. So why does the jeep not get the other configuration well because frankly it not made to race and if I did change make the changes to the other components it would rip my trans mission apart because it was my low end torque cvt would tear appart at 337HP . So while it was great that your R22 now works it was never intended to when it was designed it was an after thought.

Now before you go bashing me again . I feel that every time I have to deal with someone who acting like you currently are as a learning experience for DTV.

First we look at where did we go wrong. If your this upset there is something that customer think we did wrong ( some times there right and sometimes there wrong plain and simple )

In your case it was after they sent out the b-band converters and you still did not have hd it should of been handles as what could be the issue which should of lead to having you try the HD test channesl to make sure your getting signal. Which would of given them a fail which would of had check your dish config. Which is what it should of been set to in the start. but that is nether here or there. Some one droped the ball .

But instead of just asking in here in a calm maner. You type up this rant of a post bashing D because the r22 was not doing soemthing it was never ment to do ( but physically could ) We decide to give you an hddvr free by your own admission.

I am here to help and I am again sorry if you feel insualted but only thing I seen you do is make demands around here and insult people.

The R22 is an SD DVR, in all of DirecTV's systems. But if you have another HD receiver or DVR on the account the R22 will automatically operate as an HD DVR. You don't need to "activate" it. You don't need to do anything. All you need is HD access, but you can't have HD access unless you have another HD box on the account. And there is no point in calling DirecTv to get the R22 "upgraded" to HD because it won't happen.

It's only available for streaming customers, they still haven't added that batch of CW stations to satellite.

Even if it was, satellite customers still can't stream their CW affiliates via the app, just the Big 4, select PBS stations and some independents (mainly the ones that have full season NHL/NBA rights)

Sometimes a thread gets so many posts in it that is can cause issues for the server so that why today we introduce The Song Name Game Part 3!

So let the game continue!

The last song was added by Bobby who posted...

One Meat Ball - Andrews Sisters

CONTINUE ON AND HAVE FUN! WELCOME HOME TO SATELLITEGUYS.US!

Here are the original rules for the game as posted by WebbyDude back in 2006. http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/68645-Song-Name-Game

Just name a song title and the band who performed it. The next person does the same thing, but needs to list a song title or band name which includes a word from the previous entry. Pick songs from any genre.

Example:

Long Live Rock and Roll -- Rainbow

Rainbow in the Dark -- Dio

Another example:

Ride the Lightning -- Metallica

Lightning Strikes -- Ozzy Osbourne

Get it?

An additional note: we all know that song titles, sometimes, use profane words. Because this is a family friendly website it is advised that you clean up that title up a bit. This is accomplished by using something like sh!t instead of the real word. Thanks....

Has anyone converted one to FTA? A Frankenstein of sorts...

I have read that some have converted this type dish but after giving it a good look, it's the lnb conversion that is the bottleneck. Does anyone have a picture of their attempt to configure the lnb? I watched a video on youtube from the save it for parts guy and he used duct tape! Guess it worked but I'm thinking something a bit more permanent!
Thanks to all for your interest and replies...

Many of us have used a universal LNBF mount (or get creative with L brackets and plumbers tape - perforated metal strapping). Use a few inches of aluminum tube (or a piece of 1x2" lumber) to extend the support arm (replacing the plastic mount used by DirecTV and Dish) to place the LNBF throat opening at the correct distance from the reflector, the correct height and at the correct angle. Nothing magical... simply place the new linear LNBF in the center at the same distance, height and angle as the current combo.

To add: 101W Ku seems to be (one of if not the) strongest for me, and if I only had Ku I definitely want 101W for the music mux, it's robust FEC and strong signal help a lot. I've thought about using a used Dish/DirectTV dish at my Dads to supplement his OTA (mainly for my benefit when I visit :) )
cyberham
I used a 60cm Shaw Satellie dish (60e) with its original dual-LNB. It worked fine for 101W/97W or 99W/103W at that time when weather was fine. But the fade margin was small so rainy weather killed reception or almost so. But it was all free since they're so plentiful so I couldn't complain.

A Shaw dish with the linear LNBFs are as rare as hens teeth in the US... :)

Agreed, it mostly regurgitates known solutions. That's the point. Nobody needs an innovative fix for a driver error or a creative way to format a report. Let it handle the solved problems so people can spend their time on the ones that aren't.

Addressed by what you didn't quote. This cycle is as old as computing: compilers, libraries, frameworks each automated the tedious part, and the human work moved up a level. Innovation didn't end; it shifted. And people still make new compilers, libraries or frameworks.

Nobody's forced to hand anything off. Anyone who wants to keep doing it by hand still can, and people who couldn't do it at all now can.

Misapplication isn't something that the casual coder can identify. They can only discover, the hard way, that it doesn't work at some point.

Been reading this thread but not commenting much, primarily because there is so much "news" out there on this topic and it is hard to tell what is real and what is theater.
My biggest problem with AI is that these agents are taught...not necessarily programmed but taught. Well, there's an old saying "garbage in/garbage out". I remember a Joe Rogan show a while back when he had Elon Musk on and they talked about AI and Elon said one of the AIs (can't remember which one, sorry) was asked which was worse, Thermonuclear War or mis-gendering Kaitlyn Jenner and it came back with the answer that mis-gendering was worse. Now forget the politics involved with all the gender stuff we have been subjected to the past few years.....to say that mis-gendering is worse than the killing of hundreds of millions, perhaps billions of human beings.....Kaitlyn Jenner included.....is simply insane not to mention incredibly dangerous.

Agents need appropriate context to make what would be understood as the correct read in a situation like that, and that Gemini answer was a clear miss on that front.

That said, we've also seen Musk (and/or his team) put his thumb on the scale (or just release a very poor product) with his own deployed AI since:

In the end, it's all a tool. Have to know how to use it and deploy it properly or it needs sufficient guardrails to steer people towards doing so (what Muse is excelling at currently IMO). I'm routinely interacting with several agents a day operating various processes locally and in services I use, and there are numerous others silently spun up to perform actions or satisfy requests from my prompts.

Related to earlier discussion in the thread on leveraging local inference: this kind of analysis happening behind the scenes is something everyone will have built into Windows, IMO. Most people won't see all of this, just the results, unless they want to dig into how the fix was chosen. Stuff like this will be standard as agents get local system access baked in, and more of the inference itself moves on-device.

It's a known issue.
For a temporary fix, go into the menu, Audio, and turn Dolby Audio "OFF". You will have PCM stereo audio.

I was able to give the tech ops team some data logs so they could diagnose the problem, and they rolled me back to H708 temporarily. It fixed that issue.

They let me know that they understand what caused the issue, and it will be fixed within a few weeks in a new update.

I guess they will be busy when lots of people start asking for rollbacks to H708 now that you mention that downgrades of software does exist because it will likely fix the OTA Single Tuner and the IR Remote problems in H710-H713.

So after some heavy research, it looks like the issue I mentioned with the DISH 50.0/52.0/54.x remotes where on the 50.0/52.0 remotes, the dedicated TV Power button or on the 54.x remotes where it is using the TV button on the side followed by Power works correctly on a Hopper 3 which runs Linux but not on a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 which are Android TV (ATV) has to do with the Android TV software itself. In all instances, the remotes had always sent out a dual RF and Infrared signal when the TV Power signal is sent from the remote. The Hopper 3 without the Plus would ignore the incoming RF power packet signal which is identified as a TV-specific toggle event, and does not trigger a system-wide standby state. The Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 as Android TV devices initially worked the same way as well up to sometime in 2025 as there was the legacy pass-through mode in the original software versions used since the Hopper Plus/Joey 4/Wireless Joey 4 launch, the receiver's underlying software essentially ignored the secondary RF payload that the 50.0/52.0/54.x remotes blasted out whenever the TV Power signal was sent. The Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 recognized it was a TV-specific command and discarded the RF packet, letting the standalone IR signal do its job on the tv.

When the software for the Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 were updated in 2025 and newer versions of the software for those Android TV (ATV) devices, it overhauled how the receiver handles remote commands to tighter integrate the Android TV environment which resulted in the software starting to treat any RF power toggle payload as a global command. As the newer software verion(s) no longer filters out the concurrent RF blast from the 50.0/52.0/54.0 remotes, the moment one sends a TV Power signal from the remote, the Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 catches that unintended RF payloadand interpets it as a command to drop the system into standby.

The fix is really simple since the Android TV (ATV) software for the Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 just needs to be programmed to drop or ignore the specific RF power packets associated with the TV Power signal sequence.

The problem could also be at the remotes firmware as the remote's firmware has an engineering defect. When you try to turn off the TV, the remote's internal code mistakenly triggers its RF transmitter alongside its IR transmitter. It should only be firing the IR light blast. Because it forces a simultaneous broadcast, the remote's firmware is the original source of the problem.

The Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey firmware has a filtering defect. Good software design dictating peripheral inputs should include "error handling"—rules that tell the system what to do with messy or unintended commands.
• The legacy Hopper 3 firmware has proper error handling; it sees the remote's rogue RF packet and safely ignores it.
• The Android TV firmware in the Hopper Plu, Joey 4 and Wireless lacks this filtering logic. It blindly accepts the rogue RF packet and misinterprets it as a legitimate signal to force the entire system into standby.

If the remote didn't have a firmware bug, it wouldn't send the phantom RF signal. If the Android TV (ATV) device being the Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus, Joey 4 and Wireless Joey 4 didn't have a firmware bug, it would cleanly ignore the signal just like the Hopper 3 does.

Diesel is all over the place around here. Saw it yesterday from $5.37 to $6.17...not sure what the obsession was with ending in 7

It turns out I was justified in my suspicion.

Gavin Newsom somehow authorized the temporary move of the distribution date of the Winter blend to September 28th.

Does that raise, or lower, the overall price? Our State Government has been doing everything it can to minimize the impact of the current situation and put a freeze on the State Taxes on fuel sales at the pump. That's why we're still under $4.00/gal. while across the border in Michigan it's much higher.

Winter blend is cheaper than Summer blend.
