Finally getting started in Cband!

Hi!

Ok, I need some advice..

I just purchased that $70 6' Cband dish from WSI.

I also got the motor for it too. It's the $35 motor that was recommended in the thread announcing the dish sale.

I am using a PC to watch TV. I have an hauppage DVB-S2 tuner card in it.
I currently have 4 little ku dishes on an 8 way switch and will be adding a 5th dish next week.

I need to put the new Cband dish on the 8 way switch as well so that the PC will tune it in too like the other dishes.

For now I suppose I will just aim it at the satellite that has This TV, I think it's the one at 87, and leave it there for now until I can figure out how to make the PC make the motor move the dish when I change channels.

The lnb I have says it changes polarity by voltage the same way the ku ones do.
I assume they used to do it with a little motor. Right? So will this be a problem?

Now, on the ku, when I change channels it's instant when it changes from one satellite to another as there is no motor moving the little dishes. But the cband will have to move around to different satellites when I change channels so somehow the PC has to be able to make the motor move the dish. Right?

I don't mind there being a delay for the dish to move, I can live with that, I won't be doing a lot of that anyway, I plan to keep it mostly on This TV.

I took a picture of the lnb I have. Do I just hook it up the same way as if it were a little ku dish then add the satellite to the PC app and scan the satellite for channels?
Shouldn't it pretty much behave the same way as the ku dishes?

Many, many years ago we had a Cband system but it was always messed up so I never messed with it, it wasn't my responsibility and I had no knowledge of it's operation.

Oh, and I have this OLD tuner box that was left behind by my ex.

Is it possible to use this box to simply move the dish around? I don't want to use it to watch TV, I want the dish going into the PC with the other dishes. Doesn't it use separate wires to move the dish from the wire that the video goes down?

I don't know anything about Cband so I'm making a lot of guesses and assumptions at the point.

We have Grainger nearby in Erie too! They can be towards the high price side for some items but they can get you most anything. The final price depends on your what your discount is! Most shops and businesses all receive different prices than others which depends alot on how much and how often they buy there. It seems like the smaller and independent supply houses are more "freindly" for over the counter sales. Some will even give you the discounts that their biggest clients receive if you play them right!

Everything is at a stop for a while. I don't know when I'll mess with anything again.
My beloved German Shepherd companion of 11 years lost his battle Tuesday morning and his hips gave out on him totally.
I got him to the deck out back and I sat there with him from sun up to sun down soothing him. And crying uncontrollably.
I got him onto a towel and dragged him into the house and later, into the bedroom.

Wednesday morning I woke up and he had thrown up, still unable to go potty, things were just coming back up, a sure sign his organs were shutting down. The same thing happened to my best friend a few months ago. I knew his time was up.

I got him back on a towel and dragged him back to the deck again and sat there with him all day calming him and crying because I knew for certain what I had to do. I got out the phone book and I found a place that cremates pets so I called and made arrangements. They offered to totally handle everything but I told them I would bring him myself after the vet. I made certain that they understood I want his ashes back.

So I then called the vet and made an appointment for 3pm. I sat a few more hours out on the deck with him, hugging him, petting him and crying. He didn't have much time left and it was breaking me inside. My folks came over just before three and we put him on a blanket and carried him out to their van and got him in. He weighed 105lbs. It took all three of us to carry him.

We got to the vet and we brought him into a room and they came and talked to me and asked me what all was going on, I told them what was happening and they already knew his history and we all agreed that it was time. So the vet gave him a shot of morphine to calm him, I layed on the floor with him holding him because he was freaking out. About 20 minutes and he got real calm and the vet said that it was the right time. So they shaved a little spot on his leg to find a vein and he got a large syringe full of some pink stuff. I couldn't watch so I just put my face down over his face and sobbed silently as I listened to the vet say that it was going smooth and it was almost done. He said ok and I looked up, they had wrapped a bandage around his leg and he was listening with a stethoscope while I cradled his head in my lap. He was nodding and listening then he said real quietly, it's ok now. He's out of pain.

I sat there holding his head crying, his eyes were still open and I tried to close them, the vet said that dogs don't close their eyes when they die and you can't really force them closed like people. I just sat there looking into his eyes as a piece of me died inside.

After a few minutes he checked again to be sure and then they helped get him on a gurney and we took him to my folks van. I sat on the floor holding him and petting him as we drove to the place where they do the cremations. The people there were super nice and they gave me plenty of time so say goodbye to him, they gave me some scissors to clip some of his hair to keep and then after what seemed like forever, I made myself get up and walk away from my best friend.

They are going to cremate him then call me to come pick up his ashes in a few days.

Right now I'm eating Valium like candy and it's not helping at all.
Right now, I just don't care about anything. All that satellite BS can rot for all I care. I want my dog back.
I expect I will sit around on the deck in the cold for a few weeks popping valium and drinking coffee while I try to figure out what I'm going to do next. I don't know. I don't care. I don't even want to watch TV. I don't know what to do. I just sit here, blank. I'm hoping that I'll cry enough that I'll soon be devoid of emotion then I can just sit and be a kooky old lady talking to myself and feeding pigeons in the park.

A freaking hawk killed my hen about a week ago. My best friend and room mate died 7 months ago. Then I had to tell the vet to "kill my friend" today. :river

Any and all ambitions I had, vaporized today. I don't know when or if I'll even be back.

Thank you guys for all your help and patience, I know I've been a pain in the ass.

I understand part of your pain Dee, a few years back i "lost" my nephew, he is still with ours but not as i'd like him to be, but still, i can talk to him every day even if he doesn't responds or understands me. After that we began to loose one by one our pet dogs, the first to go was one that had been 18+ years in the family, then another one who had been with ours for more than 14 years, then the last two, a pair of dogs that were sisters, one of them even waited until my dad came over and talked to her and calmed her telling her everything was going to be ok, after hearing this she rested her head in my dad's arms and died silently, her sister died a few months after that, she lost the battle against cancer, both of them well over 14 years too. She was my "baby", i had her since she was a little tiny dog... after that, a few months later a bee stung our last dog and she died, horribly, asphixiated, i tried to save her giving her mouth to mouth resucitation but it was already too late and couldn't do anything, i felt horrible as she was diying desperately struggling in my arms. After that, i made a bow to never again have dogs, no more, it hurts so bad, so so bad. Right now i have cats that for some odd reason came over to my house and they've been here, but i have not been taking care of them too much so as to fall in "love" for their friendship and companion towards me, specially nowadays that i have been mostly unable to move a lot.

Don't you worry Dee... you have not been a pain in the arse, at least not for me, i like to help whenever it's possible.

Take care, be careful not to pop too many pills, those are very dangerous, and i've been with a friend many times after she got intoxicated with valium, percodan, and a lot of pills she has to take (bipolar), and, it's not something you'd like to experience, believe me so, the moral hangover its something i wouldn't like anybody to go through, really.

Best wishes to you too, and may god be at your side every second, even if at times it seems he's "punishing", sometimes he's just giving us test so as to have the force to affront what could be coming next. Everything has a reason to be, we don't know, maybe even shouldn't think about it, deny it nor question it, but, we know it is.

I once wrote to you asking you to stop punishing me because I am a male, but this time I have to let you know I sympathize and feel all the sorrow you are going through. I had a dog when my wife and I met, a St. Bernard, she was my everything. I couldn't leave the house without her jumping in the back of the truck, she was with me wherever I went, even when I started back to school in my 30's. She would sit in the back of the truck waiting for her "daddy" to come back. She helped raise my three kids, protecting them, watching over them, walking them to the school bus even when they were "older," She was my constant companion for nearly 18 years. She developed brain cancer and when it was her time to go to the vet, we ALL went, and when the vet told me it was time to 'do it' we all cried. I walked her out to the car so the kids could say goodbye, then brought her back into the office, I held her and cried the whole time, and I am tearing up now just writing this. This was nearly thirty (30) years ago.

You are not alone in this Dee, here we are all family and I/we/most of us feel all the pain you are going through now. People that don't have dogs in their lives miss a lot, and may not understand what we go though, but they are part of the family in every way. And as Mikhel said, watch out for those pills. And if, as you said, they are not helping at all (your words) then it's time to stop, grieve sober, and eventually get on with your life. It's sad when we lose someone (and yes, our pets ARE "someone") in our lives. It will take time, but you WILL recover from this loss in your life.

She is a rescued girl, and she doesn't have any problem showing her affection. She a "Daddy's Girl" and has been since she came into our lives and certainly adds much more to our family than just the cost of her food and keep. She "guards" the property when we are gone, and connects herself to my ankle when I am home. There have been times when I felt more affection from her than other members of my family, and you can not ask more than that from anyone or anything.

I wish you nothing but goodness in your life, and hopefully a speedy recovery from your loss and your operation.

I know what your going through Dee. I had a 12 year old German Shepherd that had hip dysplasia bad and the same thing happened this spring. She was progressively getting worse and one day she was stumbling around like she was intoxicated. Her back end simply lost all cohesion. Walking behind her the last few years with the snap, crackle and pop was hard to hear but she was a trooper all the way through. We went for a walk into the woods and then I put her down myself, it was the hardest thing I ever did. She hated to go to the vet and only went when something serious was happening so I didn't want to take her in. The hardest part for me is that it was my own hands that did her in. It was quick for her but I had to witness what I did. Later that day I emailed the breeder that I got her from in 1998 and a few weeks later I had a 2 year old rescue female German Shepherd. No dog can take the place of the one you lost but you have to go on with your life now, she is out of pain and doesn't know anything. You loved her till the end and she had a long and happy life with you. It will be a hard couple of weeks ahead for you but the pain will ebb and then it will be time to pick up the pieces and move ahead. I also concur with the advice to lay off the pills and stay away from booze. That is a band aid, doesn't fix anything and makes you worse and not better. God bless and be with you during this time of trial.

DISH Has Made it Impossible to be a VIP211k Owner

For quite a while now, people with a VIP211k have been losing their recordings on their activated external HDDs... even when there's nothing physically wrong with HDD. I believe this is an intentional and underhanded tactic that Dish is pulling in an attempt to force users away from the VIP211k.

They are obviously regretting that they ever let users have a "non-dvr" dvr in the first place. You would think they would be happy charging you a $40 one time fee... and then be happy letting the customer be the one responsible for HDD failures.

Dish clearly hates the 211k bitter-clingers. This recording deletion problem is intentional (IMO), and I think it is just one more tool that they are using. Hopper and a 2-year agreement... that's what they want you to have. Think about that... a 2-year agreement... with a company $30 Billion in debt (that's with a B). What happens when all that debt causes them to drop the channel that may have been your whole reason for having Dish in the first place? Guess who's stuck with a service that no longer suits their needs... for the remainder of the 2-year agreement.

On top of that, they don't want you to install it yourself. I purchased and installed all my equipment myself. That used to be common. Now, they lie to me and tell me that my dish must be updated to use a Hopper. Funny thing is... they don't even know what dish I have because they didn't install it, and I didn't tell them. If you ask what type of dish/LNBs the hopper needs... good luck getting an answer. All they know is that whatever you have needs to be upgraded by an installer.

It is quite apparent to me that they care much more about staying in their box, than they do working with the customer. That's too bad, because it hasn't always been that way. It's like they are totally unaware of the current business environment that they are trying to compete in.

I have been a customer since 2010. I will be cancelling my service before the next period. Yeah, I know, my $1,200 a year won't make a difference to them. It just seems like they have forgotten who needs who, especially when you consider the competition in today's streaming world. But hey, they will have succeed in forcing me off the 211k.

Well, after nine months of being on pause, I finally figured out that I was wasting $5 a month. So I cancelled. For the first time since 2010, I no longer have a Dish account.

I do have to say that I did appreciate the account pause option. That just gives a person some time to see what the fallout of cancelling will be... without having to go all the way over the cliff first.

Since I never once had an "oh shoot, I need Dish Network for..." moment, the decision was a lot easier.

Funny enough, when I called to cancel (for real, not playing the pricing game), all of a sudden, they were offering me deals that I was told before that I couldn't get without changing out my VIP211k. Now, I could have had those specials with them just sending me a new card for the receiver. LOL!

Of course, my mind was already made up because of having not missed the service while on pause. That, and the fact that I bet the 211k still kills recordings.

All in all, I'm glad that I had Dish for all those years. I just outgrew the need, and they pressed the issue by deleting recordings. I would have eventually went this route without the deleted recordings issue. But, for sure, that did hasten the outcome.

I'll still pop in at this site from time to time. Believe it or not, I still have a C/Ku BUD that I intend on playing with again if life ever slows down.

Unless things have changed at Dish, which is entirely possible, they won't activate the 211, even as a replacement. I gave one to a customer a while back....which when I turned it off I made sure to tell the CSR I wanted it freed up so another customer could use it, I was assured it was.....and when they called to swap out there's they were told it couldn't be done. Now like I said, things MIGHT HAVE CHANGED.

It hasn't changed. When I cancelled my service the other day, they told me I didn't need to return the receiver (which I already knew because I purchased it).

But in addition to that, the young man told me not to sell it, but to take it to a recycling place. The reason he gave for the advice was because 211Ks can no longer be activated.

So as far as the VIP211k goes... once grandpa dies, he's dead.

They tell you to trash it and not to sell simply because they're phasing them out, not particularly because someone might be "confused" into buying it and not be able to activate. They tell people that in every case where they're not acting to get a box back, either from a replacement or service cancel.

Although my VIP211K hasn't been subscribed or connected to a dish in probably 5 years since canceling service, my 1 TB HDD full of programming still works fine.

Upon occasion I power it up to watch something I recorded as far back as 2010. The last time I had it going in September it even let me rescan the local OTA channels which I think it refused at some earlier time. I will use it until the day it fails but this topic makes me think some software download is responsible for current subscribers.

NBA League Pass

Has anyone subscribed to NBA League Pass for 2026-27 and try to link their account to NBA.com to stream League Pass? I purchased it for 2026-27, and when I linked, I got a message saying success, but then I receive an error that my linked subscription does not include the preseason games for NBA League Pass. Is that how it has always been? I know satellite doesn't have the preseason games on the NBA League Pass channels, but I thought that I was able to stream the preseason once I linked my account on NBA.com?

I found my answer...when I log into the NBA app on my phone and try to watch, it gives me a more clear answer that it acknowledges I have paid for NBA League Pass from Dish and it is linked, but I need an "upgraded" subscription to League Pass for the preseason games. So I guess it is by design that Dish does not show the preseason games on League pass and that the contract Dish has signed for league pass is explicitly for the regular season games. (I know the description for League Pass says regular season games, but I thought that was only by satellite and the preseason would have worked)

I plan on doing what I did last season. I ordered the more expensive arena feed version from the NBA website. It's worth it because you get to watch what's going on in the arena instead of just staring at the ad break slide on the Dish version. The main advantage to ordering from the website is you can go on a month by month basis and cancel if you get tired of it.

Are we really that far from a 64-team tournament?

The benefit of the 24 team playoff:

All the cartel teams that cartels want in playoff are in playoff
- Independent of record too! Bonus.
MONEY!!!!! for the cartels.
I'm out of ideas.

Cons

Regular season really doesn't matter now other than the rivalry games
- Top cartel teams can lose three games and still make the playoff
Going to start resting players?
- The playoff is going to be *checks notes* several games!
- Resting players could make games dumb.
- Maybe even restrict NIL players from games played.
How much are streaming sub costs going up a month to pay for this?!

It would be different if it was a game that you could play 2 or games each week, but when you only play 1 game a week, the larger playoff is Not a good thing ...

The season has how many games now, is it 14 ... then you want to play another 5 (with more to come) against Top 12 (eventually 24 teams) ... remember, the 5 games in the playoffs will be the hardest games all year and back to back.

For example, IF Ohio State should win it all this year ... they play 5 teams in the Top 25, plus they would play 5 more to win it all, depending on how the ranking shake out and if Bye weeks are given.

Thats 10 Ranked teams ... in one year ...
I don't see that happening very often ...
Edit, Bama plays 4, Georgia plays 3, But Ole Miss plays 5 (didn't expect to see that)

That said, I don't see the Buckeyes winning it all this year.

Seeing theres very little activity in the MLB threads, it wouldn't matter if I posted that the Astros didn't make the Playoffs ...

Theres more NFL info in the Pub section than in the Sports/NFL thread.

Do we Really want Teams with 3 and 4 losses in the Playoffs ?
Is a 3-4 Loss team one thats able to win 4-5 more games against Top teams ?

A 12 team playoff net should catch any undefeated team. The 12 team playoff also exposed that rankings suck. I mean, we kind of knew already that the rankings weren't particularly reproducible, but we now have the empirical evidence that the rankings suck because judging who is the best among a mickey mouse scheduled football season isn't a rational endeavor. So the 12 team playoff ensures most teams that should make it, do, including the mid-major undefeated team. 8 teams should be able to work as well, but puts greater risk at OSU and Alabama missing the playoff... can't have that.

Which is the run up to my main problem with the 24 team set up is that it is designed to keep the OSU's and Alabama's from missing the playoff. The cartels are ensuring widespread participation for their own cartels to increase the monetary reward to themselves. It is fixing the system while not fixing the outcomes, merely making the regular season game outcomes virtually irrelevant. Sure, a bye for winning the conference would be nice, but we've already seen that byes aren't that influential.

That is college football in a nutshell. Again, college football isn't about competition, it is about revenue. The entire setup is about making money, from regular season squash games against local jobbers like the WWF days to tax exempt bowl games.

And to add to the first world woes, the college football cartels have made being a College Football fan even more expensive... so they can get paid more.

Site is slooooow

For some reason, the satelliteguys.us site is loading a lot slower than usual on both Chrome on my Asus laptop and Safari on my iPhone.
I'm also seeing longer appearances of the blue bar at the top and the "3 blue bars" loading symbol.
Is anyone else also having the same problem? Thanks in advance.

Am I the only one that hates what Dish did to their mobile app?

I thought I would come here and find lots of complaints about the update to the dish anywhere mobile app, but am not seeing any. It used to look just like the desktop webpage. Now you can no longer filter by sports channels or movie channels. Plus that they made it look like a big button telephone and you see fewer channels in the screen which requires more scrolling. Yes I realize you can look at sports then select which sport you want to look at, I just liked being able to see all sporting events in the guide with all other channels being filtered out. Am I alone in the wilderness on this?

It's honestly a testament to how good the previous gen Apple TVs were and are.

Not a bit. IMO, Apple's are slow to boot up. Time is about the same with 1st gen and 3rd. Roku runs rings around them in that department. I only reason I stuck, is the Apple infrastructure, which has it's definite advantages. But $300 is a deal breaker. Later, Apple!

Yeah, they boot up a bit slower than Roku, but the OS does a lot more, so it makes sense. How often are you booting them up that is a differentiator? Aside from OS updates, mine are on all the time. I will say the ATV4K is generally quicker than the Roku Ultras I have, when it comes to launching apps and responsiveness, not that the Roku is sluggish.

I assume you mean services, like iCloud and Apple Music, and not actual software sales. Services have been growing quickly for Apple, but hardware still brings home the bacon. As for where Apple's revenue comes from, the iPhone is still king with 49.58% of revenue as of June 2026. Services comes in second with 28%. iPad, Mac, and Wearables/Home makes up the rest. So, that is 72% coming from hardware. Their profit margin is around 25%, FWIW.

I am skeptical the AppleTV 4k makes them much money on the hardware though, which I suspect is what you were getting at.

Just checked my account and it shows mgm+ at 8.00 per month, but that has red line drawn thru it and shows 0.00 per month. But it doesn't say how long this lasts,...... 1 month, 3 months, forever. I called customer service to get an answer, and they said nothing like that exists. Should I add the offer or not? Already paying them too much, but want to take advantage of something free.
